Bet on the Netroots

Netroots had an impact this year! We combined the three netroots Actblue pages from DailyKos, Eschaton, and Blue America (a collective effort from Firedoglake, DownWithTyranny, and Crooks & Liars).

If you take a look at the top recipients of netroots donations, you’ll see some familiar names like Jim Webb, Jon Tester, Joe Sestak, Jerry McNerney, Patrick Murphy and Ned Lamont. Know what’s significant about that list? 5 out of the 6 won. And the sixth guy deserves kudos for putting the Iraq war on the campaign agenda for Democrats.

And the asterisks? They identify the candidates that the johnkerry.com community supported. Check out the home page for the complete list of candidates supported by the johnkerry.com community in this election cycle.

Congrats to all the candidates who won.

Although the Democrats won both houses, their majorities unfortunately are not strong enough to override a presidential veto.

President Bush, although now politically weakened, is too stubborn and inflexible to accept any changes in his conservative agenda and will use his veto power much more frequently. Sure, he may be shaking hands and having lunch with Democratic leaders but all that goodwill is just an act.

And don’t forget the Democratic Underground, and especially the John Kerry group over there. We’ve got John’s back!

Glad to be of service. I always try to give when the Friends of John Kerry call.

To Sam:

You shouldn’t be so negative. Rather than saying that we don’t have enough Democrats to override a Bush veto alone, consider what we do have:

- Bush needs Senate approval for judges, ambassadors and cabinet appointees. We have the majority. A Republican lock step vote no longer wins.

- We have the Chairs of the committees, we can have investigations with supoena power. Imagine what this will do looking at war profiteering by Halliburtan and others. These companies no only stold money, they gave bad water, food and equiptmant to our trrops.

- We can pass legislation. If it is moderate enough, not all the Republicans will vote with the President if he chooses to overright. Earlier this year, Senator Kerry spoke about how the Republicans were writing legislation that only a narrow majority wanted when it was possible that a bill could be written that a much larger percent of Congressmen would be ok with. The Republicans were playing to their radical base, this change might allow us to create legislation that is more acceptable to most people.

This was a major gain - it is a sea change. We can see the sun again.

Many thanks to the netroots and the Friends of John Kerry.

A friend of mine today said she just “felt healthier” now that the Democrats were a majority in Congress.  grin

I haven’t been on here in quite a long time - guess I’ve been busy doing other things the past few months. I just wanted to pop in and say thanks to all of you that helped my campaign.

Yes, but who/what/huh/eh/wtf are all those goshdurn pesky netroots peoples, anyway?

Well, y’all… all you have to do is look in the mirror when you wake up tomorrow and you’ll find out the answer for yourselves. Ahem.

(Unless you’re just more of those lamebutt little trollbabies who are reading this out of context, that is, in which case you should wipe under your noses and dry yourselves off behind your ears and go run back under the bridges to your mommies now… ahem, ahem.)

Do I believe that so-called ‘netroots’ activists have power or deserve credit beyond their specific and somewhat artificial parameters?

No, I most definitely do not.

Do I believe that so-called ‘netroots’ activists deserve serious props for achieving great things within their specific and somewhat artificial parameters?

You bet your electronic asterisks I do.

You done good, e-peeps. You done good. And it’s okay for you to preen a little now. Because you effin’ well earned it.

but right after right now is when the *real* work starts ahem ahem,

There’s also the Call for Change and other Moveon activist support.  I remember calls for Gillibrand, Boyda, Arcuri, Casey and Webb; it would be interesting to do a comparison of their last minute GOTV efforts to who won too.

My Plea to Democrats:

OK

I did something I haven’t done in a long time.  I voted Democrat across the board this past election.  You won.

Now I nervously await the consequences of my gamble.  I voted Democratic, even though you do not appear to have a well thought out, unified national agenda on domestic and foreign policy.  Your message still seems scattered and undisciplined.

Over the next 24 months, I am hoping you can answer the following questions for me:

1. Tell me exactly what it is that you stand for.  Help me understand your philosophical approach to governing?

2. Can government help me create an environment conducive to building a fulfilling life for my children – and my children’s children?  If so, how?  If not, why not?

3. At the close of the cold war, it seemed to me that we in the U.S. had a decision to make.  With Soviet power waning, and U.S. influence burgeoning, we had to decide whether we would attempt to rule the world – or lead the world.  The Republicans seem to have chosen the option of attempting to rule the world.  Which option will you chose?

4. Finally, the President and Republicans lied to us in order to manipulate us into supporting the war in Iraq.  Do you have the courage to hold them accountable?  What are you going to do about it?  I’m not talking revenge; I’m talking about uncovering the truth.  If all the facts had been presented and there were merely differences of opinion and approach between the two parties, I’d say – leave it alone.  But there seems to me to have been a systematic effort and the highest levels of government to lie to me.  That disturbs me greatly, and I want to get to the bottom of it.  What are you going to do?

Over the next 24 months, I’ll be watching and listening for your answers to these questions.

Respectfully,

Gary Bonner

Gary-
I understand your frustration and your concern.  I’m sure it’s difficult to cope with the fact that your party has lied to you the way they have.  We saw that the Bush administration was leading us down a very dangerous path, and now hopefully we can do something about it. Not that the Dems are perfect, we know we’re not, but I believe our leadership does have the good of the country at heart, and we hope that will drive them to make the proper decisions.  If it doesn’t, we all need to stand up and speak out.  As you say, you’ll be watching and listening.  I’ll be doing the same.
I have several Republican friends who are angry and hurt and ready for a new direction because of the deception of the Bush administration.  I only wish the Republicans would clean house, get rid of the neocons and become a worthy adversary again.  Just because the Dems have the House and Senate doesn’t mean we can accomplish our goals without help from our ‘friends across the aisle’.  We need the opposition to help keep us honest and to vote their conscience for the good of the country.
One of the greatest challenges for the Democrats, in my opinion, is in getting the truth past the media spin.  Not to dwell on a sore subject, but take the recent Kerry ‘botched joke’ incident.  Senator Kerry has done a series of speeches this year on topics like Iraq, national security, healthcare and the environment (they’re all available on this site), but little of what he’s said had made it past C-SPAN.  Yet, he drops a pronoun and the feeding frenzy begins.  Knowingly, the administration and the right wing media distorted what he intended to attack him personally.  Everyone knows the Senator would never disrespect the troops.  But it was an easy attack, and they took advantage.  That’s the problem.  The media would rather focus on personal attacks than positions.  That has to change.
Watch the videos of Sen Kerry’s speeches.  That’ll give you a good idea of where we’re coming from.  Check out the Kerry/Feingold amendment.  If you haven’t read it, you won’t recognize it from the media description.  And if you want to hear someone warn you about the lies of the Bush administration, you can find that in the video section at this site as well.  Try the Jefferson Jackson Dinner speech.  I think the Senator made it quite clear.
Welcome, by the way.  It’s good to know that you’re looking for the truth.  I think you’ll find it here.

This dailykos post may not answer your immediate questions but it may shed some light on why you think the Democrats have not articulated any plans.  The embedded links to the various plans may help fill in some of the detail as well for you.

There’s also a lot on this website.  I echo what GV recommended above and suggest that you check out JK’s speeches - transcript and video.
