Call for Change - GOTV - Rock the Vote - JUST DO IT

We’ve been impressed by the creative ways that are available for anyone to get involved in GOTV for this midterm election.

[Editor’s Note: The moderating team will approve comments left overnight first thing in the morning. Thanx.] <!-more-> Pachacutec at FireDogLake rounded up a few of them in “Blue Army: Bring It On” including one of our all-time personal fav’s, A Beginner’s Guide to Canvassing by EricS at dailykos.

Contact Do More Than Vote and use their easy interface to get connected to the right volunteer organization for you in your area. DMTV is now up to 57 chapters in all competitive states, but even if you’re not in one of their towns, they have ways you can help. There’s a DMTV update below.

Nervous about the idea of door knocking? Don’t be: people are very welcoming, especially this year. Look at the polls: people have Had Enough and they want change. Here’s a great introduction to canvassing from a diary at Dkos (hat tip to Blue Army member xyz).

Volunteer to become a poll worker. It’s not too late in most places, and they need people on standby as well, in case people get sick or don’t show up. Let’s not just complain about fairness at the polls; let’s become part of the solution. To sign up, go here. They’ve been asking for poll workers in my area onthe radio, so I’m sure your area could use help, too.

Volunteer for Howard Dean’s new army through your local Democratic Party. Just show up at your closest party office and they can put you to work.

Party at the Polls with Working Assets on election day. This is a project to organize local, community-oriented events at or near polling stations on Election Day in order to boost community turn-out. These are non-partisan events, so not everyone is interested. Although, if you know what neighborhood you’re turning out, they can be very partisan. By linking voting to a nearby party, they hope to boost turnout. Today is the last day to sign up, so people can get the stickers, buttons, fliers, and kit in time.

Pachacutec also included this one which you’ve seen elsewhere on johnkerry.com:

MoveOn has a great online interface that can allow you to phone bank from your home for any race in the country where help is needed. It’s called Call for Change, and it’s fantastic. Please let me repeat: you can stay at home and help out anywhere in the country. This utility is as potentially groundbreaking for our side as ActBlue has been. MoveOn’s whole year has been geared up for the next few days, and they need you to attend a house party (over 4000 nationwide) to hook up for base mobilization. Here’s a diary with loads of direct volunteer feedback about the MoveOn stuff this cycle. Check out the testimonials in the comments!

rockthevote2.jpgAnd last but not least, here’s a diary that bluerevolt at dailykos put together that everyone can use.

It lists every House, Senate and gubernatorial race in the country with links to the campaign sites as well as to other GOTV websites. So find the races close to you, call them up or just show up at the door or pick one of the other creative ways to be involved.

Just go do it – GOTV!!

Awesome ideas!  And don’t forget good, old-fashioned bugging your friends and family - enfranchisement begins at home :)

BigPath has some awesome hand-outs, talking points, that would be good for blog posts, phone calls, or just taping up around your city.

http://bigpath.net/Election-Day-Checklist/

Most people I’ve talked to are sick of the negative ads and want to know what the different candidates would actually DO, so these fliers would be really helpful in telling them.

“You’re a bleeding heart-liberal!”

Why, yes, I am. Thank you very much.

“You hate George Bush and eveything he stands for!”

Why, yes, I do. Thank you very much.

“You want the government to raise taxes!”

You’re right, I do. Thank you very much.

“You think queers should be allowed to marry!”

Yes, as a matter of fact, I do. Thank you.

“You’re not even a decent Christian!”

No, I’m not. I’m not even a Christian, period. Thank you.

“You don’t support our troops in Iraq!”

No, I don’t. I support our troops out of Iraq instead. Thank you.

“You’d vote for a yellow dog before you’d vote for a Republican!”

Yes, I would. This year I most certainly would.

So would a growing majority of my fellow citizens.

And they wouldn’t feel that way without you.

Thank you. Thank you very much.

Sandy,

Great link to Big Path. There’s lots of good stuff there with many pdf’s which can be downloaded by people needing campaign material to distribute.

Well I’ll be canvassing tomorrow, and then on Tuesday will be going to a polling place at 5 a.m.  and checking the dreaded machines before the voting starts ( first time I have to vote on a Diebold, and with no paper trail). Then I will helping get people to the polls.

I’m in the red part of Virginia, military heavy and we’ll see who really support the troops. If I get one more RNC flyer in the mail and their lame tax issue , I am going to scream. But hey they have nothing else they can run on.

Go Webb !!

Go Kellam !!

Wow, even Superman knows that it’s time for a new direction.

President Bush won’t give you the truth on Iraq and you won’t get any justice spending billions of taxpayer money on an illegitimate war. Instead we need a gradual redeployment from Iraq, an increase in the minimum wage, a policy that endorses embryonic stem cell research, a repeal of the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, and a plan for fiscal responsibility.

Therefore:

VOTE DEMOCRATIC ON TUESDAY

For Truth, Justice, and the American Way, as Superman would say.

Senator Kerry,

You carry a terrible burden, and you have done an awesome job for all of us.

Some Americans resent what you have to say; and they thus condemn your speech.  After Vietnam, you participated in the Winter Soldier testimony.  They like to repeat your words about atrocities and say you were attacking the troops.  But that is a lie.  You spoke truth and we know that atrocities were part of the disaster called the Vietnam War.

Some resented you when you asked that the $87 billion be paid for by Americans in their taxes, and not added to the deficit with more tax cuts for the wealthy.  But they twisted your words to make you sound indecisive.  But they were switching their votes at the same time as you were.  You sought fiscal responsibility; they used that to smear you.

Some resented you when you suggested that the all volunteer army might end up being made up of racial minorities and the poor.  This does not denigrate those of less means or those who are minorities, or even those of lesser academic skills.  You were concerned about those portions of our society being exploited to fill the ranks of the military.  Recent headlines about difficulties in recruiting, and the acceptance of drop-outs is unfortunately what you predicted.  And yet they twist your words.

You recently reported about the ICRC report on American soldiers involved in acts of terror in Iraqi homes.  This continues to be documented even in the Haditha trials and elsewhere.  But they twisted your words to say that you thought Americans were terrorists.

And in California, pointing out that the President, who lives in a state of denial, hadn’t prepared, hadn’t studied, and had gotten stuck in Iraq, they pounced.  They twisted your words until nothing made sense any more.  They made it appear that you didn’t support or thought that our troops were less educated.

You, above anyone, have supported our soldiers.  From not wanting to put them into harms’ way to fighting for Veterans’ benefits, you have led the way in Congress.  Recently, you have crisscrossed this great nation of our campaigning for veterans from Tammy Duckworth to James Webb.  For this we are grateful.  We know that you support the troops!

America needs your leadership and your willingness to face the fire of those who seek to destroy their political opponents.  We can get through 2006, but 2008 awaits us.  After Tuesday, it is time to start speaking to America once more!

We have got your back John!

It is time for America to gain its dignity mangage and dissolve the anomosity toward American people.

Okay, now *this* is the kind of thing that really frosts my otter asterisk, bigtime!

Blogger Handcuffed at George Allen Rally

http://apnews.myway.com//article/20061105/D8L6INF00.html

WEYERS CAVE, Va. (AP) - A liberal blogger who was manhandled by supporters of Sen. George Allen this week was handcuffed by authorities and escorted from another rally Saturday after an Allen backer claimed the man pushed him to the ground.

Mike Stark told The Associated Press that sheriff’s deputies detained and released him. He was not charged.

“I’ll own this town,” Stark, a first-year University of Virginia law student, was overheard telling sheriff’s deputies as he was led away from the rally at Shenandoah Valley Regional Airport.

Stark said that he was attending the event as a reporter for the Air America Radio network’s “The Young Turks” show and that he wanted to ask Allen about his arrest record and why he didn’t do more to stop his supporters from wrestling him to the ground at a campaign event on Tuesday.
On Saturday, Allen supporters formed a human wall to block Stark’s access to the senator, who is in a tight election race with Democrat Jim Webb. As Stark tried to sidestep the wall, he brushed the side of a supporter, who fell. A deputy sheriff grabbed Stark, put his arm behind his back and led him away to the cheers of about 100 Allen supporters.

Stark said that he had little contact with the man and that he overheard him tell another supporter that he planned to “take a dive.”

The supporter who fell refused to give his name or talk about the incident.

Dan Allen, an aide to the senator, also refused to discuss the incident. The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office said it would have no comment until a formal statement Monday.

[snip]

On Tuesday, Stark was put in a chokehold and slammed to the floor by three Allen supporters in Charlottesville in an incident captured on video. Witnesses said Stark approached Allen, loudly asking, “Why did you spit at your first wife, George?” in an attempt to ask Allen about his legal history.

Albemarle County records show Allen received two summonses in 1974, but supporting documents were destroyed long ago. Allen has said the offenses were for fishing without a license and unpaid parking tickets.

Allen’s ex-wife, Anne Waddell, later issued a statement calling Stark’s question “a baseless, cheap shot.”

Cheese on rice, people! And some folks wonder why we keep calling them rethuglicans?

These neaderthal neokonzertruppe tactics must be publically ceased and desisted at once.

And all the Greedy Old Party slimeweasels who endorse such desperate moves to suppress dissent must be ridden out of town on a righteous blue rail come Tuesday next—period, paragraph, page.

That’s a great list of resources for GOTV and protecting the vote.

I highly recommend to anyone who can do it, be a poll watcher once or twice, then if possible become a pollworker (i.e. election board member). You will be amazed at what you learn about the process of voting, and little legal details about situations like whether a person is allowed to have assistance in the voting booth (in my state, they are, but there are restrictions).

I think working at the polls gives a person a better understanding of just what mechanisms of fraud would be feasible. For example I think the whole “voter fraud” thing is very much exaggerated. It’s just a way to impose difficult photo id requirements which can suppress the vote of demographics that would tend to vote Democratic. I don’t know if I would have so much confidence in my opinion except that by working at the poll, I’ve seen how hard it would be to actually perpetrate that kind of fraud. Of course that assessment is based on having representatives from multiple parties present.  ANYTHING can happen if there is only one party represented.

So, get out there and make sure that your polling places have Democrats watching what’s going on!

Otter, check out Mike Stark’s diary at dailykos:

As the Senator finished his speech, I tried to ask my question.  They did something that is absolutely acceptable.  They shouted louder than me.  “Six more years.  Six more years!”  Fair enough.  They crowded between me and the Senator.  Equally fair.

I however, saw an opening.  There was no obstruction between me and the door through which the Senator had to pass in order to get to the tarmac.  I made haste to establish position so that I could ask my question before the Senator left.  I had just about arrived when I saw a blur out of my peripheral vision.  A kid that had stood in front of me during Allen’s speech (whispering things back and forth to whom I thought was his mom) just barely clipped my arm and took a dive.

There was a cop right there.  “Why did you push him?” he asked as he grabbed my arms and began the process of handcuffing me.  Of course, I did nothing of the sort.  I knew the entire time that I was at that event that I needed to be on my best behavior.  And I was.

I had been questioned hostily throughout the wait for the Senator and I answered all questions with patience, sincerity and politeness.

The beautiful part about all of this?  There’s video of everything that happened.  Look for it soon.

I’ll be helping with the machines for the disabled on Tuesday. As yet, NY hasn’t complied with HAVA, and those machines are all that we’ve done. Machines that will be thrown out, because with a quarter inch adjustment to the ballot, could have been used with PBOS, paper ballots woith optical scanners. Not the preference, still, by the election boards. They still think they’ll get convenience with electron touchscreen voting.

Having seen all those many details up close, as you say, MH, and hello by the way, I can understand the opportunity for fraud and just how attractive it is for people to want to believe someone else will take care of all those details.

However, there is more human error at the Boards of Elections than voter fraud. The ID laws are the ultimate disenfranchisement, along with the purging going on to comply with mandated electronic databases.

The federal study that there is NO voter fraud issue was held back until the law was passed. Promoted by an overnight voter’s rights group that was GOP, a shell group, and given a seat at the table to spout that malarky.

Also got a lot of traction from the security fears, nationwide.

Jimmy Carter signed onto IDs at the Carter-Baker Commission in exchange, I think, for another point, but he didn’t mean we were to push it through immediately.

Good luck to us all, Tuesday!

Seems John Kerry again taking one for the team, put us in better position, not that the other 2008 hopefuls and media will acknowledge that truth.

Thank you, Senator, and let’s wait to see how this all plays out. Please do not go quietly into the night. We need your leadership.

These are samples of the downloads Sandy mentioned . This series of 6 is designed for Democratic campaigners working this last weekend to help undecided voters decide. They draw clear distinctions between the parties and can be used to bolster the fact that Democrats do have a plan.

These deal with:
1. Economic Issues
2. Energy and the Environment
3. Healthcare and Medicine
4. National Security
5. The Constitution, Ethics & Human Rights.
The sixth one is more general.  (Also the single most popular BigPath download!)

I downloaded some of the handouts and distrubuted them yesterday. One of the issues that is important for many of the people in my neighborhood is not related to which party to vote for but rather the person. People around here, despite this being a heavily Republican district (IL-6) would rather look at the candidate and not the party. That being said, it is easy to tell people that if they agree with the Dem’s position, they should vote for the candidate that agrees with them on the issues. Psychologically, it creates an enormous cognitive dissonance for life long Republicans to vote for a Democrat.

It does.

That’s why many will sit home instead of going to the polls.  Of course I’d much rather they vote Democratic but they have it drilled into their head that they are a one party person.  It seems disloyal to them to vote any other way.

They’re embarrassed about Bush.  They’re embarrassed about their Republican representatives, but they can’t go the final step.

Crooks and Liars has a good post up about “Iraq for Sale”.  I’ll have to go see it.  In the meantime, war profiteering is immoral if not criminal.  And of course, Bush just cut out the funding to the Iraq accountability office so they can’t protect us from these war-profiteering companies and the incompetent policies any longer.

ABC poll slows slight improvement for Dems among military veterans since last poll in October (poll conducted Nov 1 - 4). The analysis calls it “essentially the same” yet Dem support is 2 points higher and Rep support is the same, meaning (ignoring MoE) that some undecideds moved to Dem. Now, they may be saying “essentially the same” because 2 points is within MoE, but what would they have said if it went the other way?

Another question is whether the Democrats were hurt by a comment last week by Sen. John Kerry that some took as disrespectful to veterans. In this poll military veterans split 42-51 percent (Dem.-Rep.) for House; in an early October ABC/Post poll, it was essentially the same, 40-51 percent.

... the Democrats don’t show direct damage from the Kerry remark ...

However, in the discussion of this poll at dailykos, this point seems to have been missed.

On a side note, I give the writer props for neutral phrasing: “comment” and “some took as…” rather than the more biased phrasing most writers have been using. JMHO on that one, though.

OTOH, on reflection the damage would not have been from the remark, but from the flap surrounding it, which was given air by Dems who jumped on the RW bandwagon instead of standing up for the truth.  So take props away from the writer for referencing the “comment” not the flap.

Adding to what Ron noted above about JK and the American Legion’s request. JK’s bill went to Committee - Republican controlled Commitee and was held up there. Go figure.

Army Guard, Reserve face new call-ups to Iraq
Citing rule changes and mounting stress, leaders express concern

By Ann Scott Tyson

Updated: 12:18 a.m. ET Nov 5, 2006

The Army’s National Guard and Reserve are bracing for possible new and accelerated call-ups—spurred by high demand for U.S. troops in Iraq—that leaders caution could undermine the citizen-soldier force as it struggles to rebuild.

Two Army National Guard combat brigades with about 7,000 troops have been identified recently in classified rotational plans for possible special deployment to Iraq, according to senior Army and Pentagon officials, who asked that the specific units not be named. One brigade could be diverted to Iraq next year from another assignment, and the other could be sent there in 2008, a year ahead of schedule.

I saw that this morning. Horrifying and heartbreaking. The war without end. ARGH!

Posted by Pamela Leavey | 11/05/06, 08:44 AM EST

Keep in mind we face two wars without end.

First of all, it is questionable whether the Republicans can get us out of Iraq in the forseeable future.

Secondly, even if we get out of Iraq, there is still the “war on terror” which Republicans will milk politically as long as they can. The “war on terror” is becoming a perpetual war with no end which will continue to give them justification for increased government secrecy and increased restrictions on civil liberties.
