Get Ready to Live Blog The Daily Show

thismomentonearth200x296.jpg

Well, tonight’s live blogging session promises to be more fun than this morning’s turned out to be. Check your local cable listing for Comedy Central’s The Daily Show tonight. They have a nice intro of the show and of the book.

And this just in from JK’s press people:

This morning when John Kerry and Teresa Heinz Kerry’s book This Moment On Earth went on sale in bookstores nationwide, it was ranked 4,000th on Amazon.Com. No wonder the Today Show’s Meredith Veira thought she had a point when she asked John Kerry whether Americans really cared about the environment.

Well, day one isn’t even over – and the book is now ranked #170 on Amazon.Com! That’s a huge first day of sales – and interest.

Please, come check it out on Amazon – write a review – and let your friends know:

Keep the momentum going!

I don’t know that this changes anything about the critiques offered about the way The Today Show interview was conducted this morning but it does offer some insight into why so much time was spent on discussing Elizabeth Edwards and so little on the book, “This Moment on Earth”.

Live From Studio 1A: Shuffling the Kerrys Posted: Monday, March 26, 2007 6:51 AM by Peter Giordano

Categories: Live from Studio 1A

Here’s a quick little tidbit about this morning’s rundown. Initially, Senator John Kerry and his wife, Teresa, were scheduled to be on our show this morning to discuss their new book. They were going to appear in the 8 o’clock hour, since the interview would focus more on the book and less on the news topics of the day. However, over the weekend, more news developed regarding Senator John Edwards and his wife Elizabeth. They gave their first interview last evening since the return of Elizabeth’s cancer, which instantly became the news that would lead our show. Given the history between the Kerry and the Edwards families, Senator Kerry’s appearance suddenly became all the more topical. For that reason, the senior producers decided to bump their appearance to the top of the show, and focus the interview on much more than just their new book. Who better to have on the show to discuss John and Elizabeth Edwards than the couple with whom they spent inordinate amounts of time on the campaign trail two years ago. Andrea Mitchell was filing a report on the Edwards family at the very top of the show, and the Kerrys became the interview immediately flowing out of that report. All it meant was a bit of an earlier wake-up call for the Senator and his wife, but I’m sure they didn’t mind. They’re here and ready to go.

Well, it may have made sense to those doing the scheduling but for those who thought they were tuning in to an introduction of “This Moment on Earth” on The Today Show, ahhh…. well, not so much. <!-more-> And just to keep you amused while you wait for The Daily Show, Bob Geiger tossed off a few witticisms of his own in this piece on Huffington Post, “Does A Major Swift-Boat Donor Become An Ambassador This Week?”. See if you can spot all the zingers.

Which one is your favorite?

Sadly, I must miss the liveblogging tonight, since I’m usually still eating dinner when the rest of you folks watch Jon Stewart, but I’m hoping it’ll be a better interview than what I saw this morning.  Or rather, an interview, as opposed to a bunch of editorial statements with question marks tacked on wink

Posted by democrafty | 03/26/07, 02:16 PM EST

Great news. That’s quite a bump from a short interview by a lousy interviewer.  The scheduling explanation doesn’t quite cut it does it? Still, it’s terrific news that JK and THK’s brief appearance sparked so much interest in TMOE.

I am really looking forward to The Daily Show and live blogging.

Posted by ProSense | 03/26/07, 02:21 PM EST

democrafty, I think that the Daily Show in question is at 11 pm tonight EDT (am I right, anyone?? please correct me if I’m wrong); usually, the 8 pm show is a repeat from the day before (which means there’ll be a repeat of Kerry’s interview tomorrow at 8 pm EDT??). . you might check (or tape) that second show. .

Posted by mbk | 03/26/07, 02:58 PM EST

I’m not sure what the timing is of The Daily Show for people on the west coast.  But please post later if that’s when you see it.

We’d still like to know what you think no matter which time zone you’re in.

Another review from the politico, mostly positive.  I was surprised to find this review on this site, and it was good to read.

Here are a few excerpts.
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0307/3296.html

There’s a lot of prodding of the masses to jump in and help turn around the fate of the Earth. It’s a call to action that cuts across all classes of society with examples woven throughout the book about everyday people crusading to make a difference.

Those include the story of Majora Carter of the South Bronx, who seven years ago led a movement to halt plans to build a huge municipal waste facility in her blighted Hunts Point community. Helen Reddout of Yakima County, Wash., won a legal victory over large dairy owners whose 40,000 head of cattle plastered the area with manure daily. Her action took root over conversation at a yard sale, and a lawsuit followed under the Clean Water Act that eventually led to a cleanup.

...
It sounds so optimistic and pure. But we all know the clock is ticking. The Kerrys’ masterstroke here is that they weave personal stories throughout these pages, glimpses of their time on the campaign trail crisscrossing America in 2004. With this book and its grass-roots spotlights, they’ve come out winners this time.

Posted by FrenchGirlFromMA | 03/26/07, 03:40 PM EST

Holy cow, sales are up over 3,000% on amazon.com.

I bought four, so that probably bumped it up by ... well, nothing.
grin

Still the people I gave the book to were thrilled.  I can’t wait to hear their reviews.

Awesome.  The reviews I’ve read are glowing, so I’m guessing it’ll climb even higher.

Nice work, JK and THK!

Got the book today, can’t put it down! To be brief, it covers such a wide range of topics and is very well put together. Congratulations Senator and Mrs. Kerry on another fabulous, thought provoking book.

Posted by Thomas Senecal | 03/26/07, 04:37 PM EST

What a great roundup.  I missed The Today Show, and can’t seem to bring myself to watch the video you posted, what with all I’ve heard all over the blogs.  I won’t be able to make it up that late tonight to live blog, but I’ll try to log on some time tomorrow with my own Daily Show review.  It’s probably my favorite show on TV, so it’s already programmed in the DVR.  Here’s hoping JK (is THK coming, too?) gets a two part interview—that way he can cover current events in the first part and talk about the book in the second.

Posted by beachmom | 03/26/07, 04:38 PM EST

I certainly am happy the book has sold so well in the first day of it’s release. This is welcome news after that terrible interview done on the Today Show this morning.
The Senator and Mrs. Heinz-Kerry are real troopers to have put up with the nonsense and awful questions they were expected to answer this morning.

Posted by wisteria | 03/26/07, 04:46 PM EST

Hi, everyone! I just checked the listing out here in California and it looks like it will be at 11:00 p.m. PDT here.  I guess that’s 2:00 a.m. for most of you. The Daily Show does show at 8:00 p.m., but not with the senator.

I’m planning to live vicariously through all of you until 11, and then I’ll post here (as you sleep).  smile

Posted by YvonneCa | 03/26/07, 06:18 PM EST

That does explain why the Edwards comments took up so much of the interview. I loved the answers of both Kerrys there - they were extremely respectful of this being a personal decision for the Edwards.

It still does not excuse the obnoxious question that the interviewer asked Teresa Heinz Kerry. I seems supicious that she was one of the women on “The View” where a beautiful, kind answer by Teresa to a question on how she and Laura would be different as first ladies was twisted into what became an attack on Teresa.

As ro my favorite zinger - it has to be this one:
“At which point, I’m sure the people of Belgium will look at us wondering if we sent someone like Fox because one of the GOP’s many convicted or suspected felons was not available.”

I hope the Democrats or even some Republicans, who have consciences and a sense of where the politics of destruction crosses the line, block this man. The fact that he refuses to bend - even in the written questions, one of which he apparently had to change - to accept some personal responsibility is wrong. It clearly doesn’t seem too much to ask.

I seriously can’t picture the dignified gentleman Senator crossing the room to punch Fox in the face - though his gently but firmly spoken questions seemed to hit Fox with great force. Kerry’s words were likely at least as forceful as his fist would have been and from Fox’s squirming - they hit home as true.

It seems odd that the AP and other outlets have seemed to suggest that Fox may be denied an ambassadorship because of political payback - it seems in reality that almost the opposite is true, the ambassadorship is clearly political payback for this donation and many others. Meanwhile, is it possible that the millions spent in Ohio in those last few weeks to tell lies, gave Bush those extra 60,000 votes? Given that, it seems pathetic to whine that a political crony lost a chance to be ambassador to a country he knew little about when Kerry grilled him.

Posted by Karennj | 03/26/07, 06:23 PM EST

I watched the video of the Today Show interview and thought that John Kerry and Teresa Heinz Kerry made their points effectively and intelligently. I would think the viewers who were watching thought more highly of them than the intereviewer .  Their genuineness came through.  The interviewer was all over the place and insulting at times. But JK and THK were above it and very nice.

I have a few stories to share about ordinary people who made a real difference in their communities cleaning up the environemt and educating others about the environment.

Jon seems very pumped up tonight.  Hope that bodes well for the interview.  smile

Posted by Island Blue | 03/26/07, 07:08 PM EST

John Oliver from Iran was really funny.

Posted by ProSense | 03/26/07, 07:09 PM EST

John Oliver is hilarious.  That was a funny bit about the difference between British and American hostages.  The poor Iranians.  (This is a great show tonight.  Lots of energy.)

Posted by taytay | 03/26/07, 07:09 PM EST

Lewis Black up, talking about the “good news” from Iraq.

Posted by Island Blue | 03/26/07, 07:12 PM EST

Even Lewis Black seems upbeat and, dare we say it, cheerful. Must be something in the water cooler backstage.

Posted by Otter | 03/26/07, 07:12 PM EST

Oh good, The Iraqis are free.  They have tattoos.  (Do we get Hi Mom or Death to America!  LOL!)

Posted by taytay | 03/26/07, 07:13 PM EST

That was one of the best Lewis Black rants in a long time.  LOL!

Posted by taytay | 03/26/07, 07:15 PM EST

Lewis Black was great… setting the stage for JK?

Posted by Thomas Senecal | 03/26/07, 07:15 PM EST

Huge rounds of applause after the intro w/ picture of the book etc. ... JK looks like he’s having a blast already. So does Stewart.

Posted by Otter | 03/26/07, 07:19 PM EST

he’s on and he looks good—blue tie.  Stood up and took a bow.

Posted by Violet | 03/26/07, 07:19 PM EST

Looks great.  Blue tie still.  Huge ovation from the audience.  I mean HUGE!  JK excited to follow Lewis Black.

Posted by Island Blue | 03/26/07, 07:20 PM EST

He looks great!

the audience seems, ahm friendly.

250 pages in TMOE, no pics.

We wrote it for Colbert, not you.  LOL!

Posted by taytay | 03/26/07, 07:20 PM EST

JK: “Well, we wrote it for Colbert, not for you.”

Posted by Otter | 03/26/07, 07:20 PM EST

Nice! JS goes right to the book. Says ‘250 pages and no pictures’ to which JK deadpans ‘we wrote it for Colbert, not you’.

Posted by Kerstin | 03/26/07, 07:21 PM EST

Jon Stewart 250 pages no pictures. Kerry, we wrote it for Colbert.

Posted by ProSense | 03/26/07, 07:21 PM EST

JK thinks book is better without pics.  Hmmm.  We’ll talk.  This is great so far.  JK very relaxed.

Posted by Island Blue | 03/26/07, 07:21 PM EST

JS:  250 pages no pictures

JK: We wrote it for Colbert

Posted by Violet | 03/26/07, 07:21 PM EST

250 pages, no pictures.

Posted by Karennj | 03/26/07, 07:21 PM EST

Jon actually asking about the book.  Novel idear.

Posted by Island Blue | 03/26/07, 07:21 PM EST

Stewart getting a dig in about the Gore connection—JK doing a fine job of being funny to the max right along with Stewart, there is obviously a great deal of affection & respect between these two men.

Posted by Otter | 03/26/07, 07:22 PM EST

Is there competition with VP Gore.  LOL!

Why write the book?  Because we are running out of time to deal with these crises.

Posted by taytay | 03/26/07, 07:22 PM EST

“We’re running out of time”

Posted by Thomas Senecal | 03/26/07, 07:22 PM EST

Nice appearance.  Funny, relaxed, actually getting to talk about the book.  Wow!

Posted by taytay | 03/26/07, 07:23 PM EST

Jon is cracking JK up.  JK is able to talk at length about the book.  Great!

Posted by Island Blue | 03/26/07, 07:23 PM EST

‘In the 70’s we did a lot of cleaning up - we had a partnership with government’ mentions Hudson river cleanup, Boston harbor cleanup, etc. Stewart asks ‘What happened since then?’

Posted by Kerstin | 03/26/07, 07:23 PM EST

Much better than this morning

Posted by Thomas Senecal | 03/26/07, 07:23 PM EST

A real interview, who woulda thunk ?

Posted by fedup | 03/26/07, 07:24 PM EST

Kerry described what the book is about - spoke of how a lot was done in the 70s to make things better. But its worse now. Pollluters can gat away with things.

Posted by Karennj | 03/26/07, 07:24 PM EST

Jk contrasting the great successes that the environmental activists had in partnership with the government back in the 1970’s—cleaning up Lake Erie, the Cuyahoga River, Boston Harbor, etc.—with the irresponsibility of the current admin & the years of Repo leadership.

Posted by Otter | 03/26/07, 07:24 PM EST

JK says laws have not been enforced since then. Bush admin especially guilty of that. JS ‘this is not the administration I recognize’ - laughter

Posted by Kerstin | 03/26/07, 07:24 PM EST

Gee that doesn’t sound like the Bush Admin I know.  (Not abiding by Polluter Pays laws.  LOL)

Stewart question:  How do we fine tune the planet.

Good question.  (He gets one a month.)

Posted by taytay | 03/26/07, 07:25 PM EST

Jon Stewart is the best interviewer on television.  No doubt.

Posted by Island Blue | 03/26/07, 07:25 PM EST

It’s a real interview. Great question by Jon Stewart. Kerry says he’s blowing the image of the show.

Posted by ProSense | 03/26/07, 07:25 PM EST

And JK is having a ton of fun with this interview. Good deal. What a nice way to end his day after starting out with that incompetent on the Today show this morning.

Posted by Otter | 03/26/07, 07:25 PM EST

Jon still rooting for the pictures in the book

Posted by Violet | 03/26/07, 07:25 PM EST

“if there is a sequel, we’ll put a picture in”

Posted by Thomas Senecal | 03/26/07, 07:26 PM EST

JK stresses that most people in the book do not see themselves as environmentalists, that they’re just ordinary people wanting to do what is right.

Posted by Kerstin | 03/26/07, 07:26 PM EST

And Stewart keeps twitting him because there are no pictures in the book. *grin* JK promises there’ll be at least one picture in the sequel when it comes out.

Posted by Otter | 03/26/07, 07:26 PM EST

shame it couldnt last longer

Posted by Thomas Senecal | 03/26/07, 07:26 PM EST

Obligatory question about 08; ‘you’re not running are you?’ And small mention of Edwards.

Posted by Kerstin | 03/26/07, 07:27 PM EST

Excellent.  I don’t know why a comedy show does the best news interviews lately, but there it is, an honest, funny and lively interview in which the author actually gets to talk about his book.  Thanks to TDS.

Posted by taytay | 03/26/07, 07:27 PM EST

Interview over, music riff kicks in signaling the break for commercials, the crowd goes wild… and it does even by Daily Show standards, if you watch it regularly you can tell the difference between their applauding for the show and applauding for the guest, this crowd really liked having JK there tonight.

Posted by Otter | 03/26/07, 07:27 PM EST

definitely better than this morning…

here’s where it stands right now on Amazon:

8.  2,143% Sales Rank in Books: 106 (was 2,378)

Posted by Violet | 03/26/07, 07:29 PM EST

You are so right taytay.  That was excellent.  Funny, yet on point - he actually allowed JK to talk.  Thanks Jon!

Posted by Island Blue | 03/26/07, 07:29 PM EST

Yes, this was fun tonight. Please tell the good Senator that we expect him to be back on the show this time next week, too.

Posted by Otter | 03/26/07, 07:29 PM EST

That was a great show tonight.  Oliver’s bit was hysterical, Lewis Black was great and Sen. Kerry was also great.  (Hey, with that lineup he could have been upstaged.  He wasn’t.)

The audience was really happy to see Kerry.  How nice.

Posted by taytay | 03/26/07, 07:31 PM EST

I think Meredith Vieira needs to take “ how to conduct an interview” classes from Jon Stewart.

Great interview, too bad it wasn’t longer.

Posted by fedup | 03/26/07, 07:34 PM EST

Thanks, everybody!  Can’t wait till it’s 11 in CA!

Posted by democrafty | 03/26/07, 07:35 PM EST

democrafty,

Neither can I.  smile Thanks everyone for the great ‘play-by-play.’

Posted by YvonneCa | 03/26/07, 07:46 PM EST

Great interview and the crowd was wonderful and very, very excited to see Senator Kerry. And best of all, he got to talk about the book for the majority of the interview.

IMO, He needs to do a couple more interview shows. How about Jay Leno- The Tonight Show and The David Letterman Show?

Posted by wisteria | 03/26/07, 08:20 PM EST

There was a nice little promo about JK on The Daily Show during the credits for Scrubs, so tune in a few minutes early - for people on PDT or if they show it on a replay.

And Bravo Sen. Kerry!  I’m so glad that Jon Stewart actually talked about the book for almost the whole interview unlike every other interview we’ve heard so far including Charlie Rose, Imus, and the horrible one on the Today Show Monday morning.  It went by too quickly!

Posted by aRoseforJK | 03/26/07, 08:35 PM EST

I missed another show to watch Senator Kerry on the show and he was great!  He was very relaxed and joked with Stewart.  I’m so hoping to go and buy the book sometime this weekend hopefully.  I noticed Mr. Kerry seemed sad when Stewart asked if he was running in 2008 and was more silent.  I wish he was running again.  :( But for now I’m supporting Mike Gravel. Awesome appearance though!  I liked what Kerry said about the Edwards’s.  smile

Posted by Emily | 03/26/07, 09:43 PM EST

Excellent interview, it looked like the Senator and Stewart were having a great time.
I’m thinking the next book will have pictures.
grin

The audience reaction to the Senator’s appearance was huge.  I expected that, but it was great to see.
Note to The Today Show:  When you invite someone on your show to talk about a book, it’s a good idea to include a conversation about the book.  Maybe even show the audience the actual book as you discuss it.  Meredith may want to consider that next time.

I checked Amazon, and there’s a great customer review, and someone who obviously liked the book very much has started a discussion about it.  Looks like the Kerrys have hit a home run with this book.

Excellent interview.  And thanks, all, for the liveblog.
