JK just completed his book chat at Firedoglake. You can check it out here. There were some good questions and answers.
katymine says:
There should be grave concerns about the plastics containing estrogen. There has been a increasing lowering of the age of puberty for girls and I wonder since so much of our food come packaged in plastic containers if this is related.
My own grand daughter is going through puberty at 7yrs old. They were told to stay away from beef and milk that might have hormones. Now I wander if this a lifetime of exposure to plastics from the baby bottle to food containers? John Kerry says:
katymine : what a great observation! More and more people are asking the same question and as we point out the experiment done by scientists showed that even the phalates in the test tube changed the outcome of the experiment. It produced cancer before they even introduced the carinogenic test!
Twisted Martini says:
Senator-Given the billions in profit at stake for maintaining the status quo, what steps can be taken to neutralize that money and its influence on policy?
Thank you so much for your leadership on this and many other issues!
John Kerry says:
Twisted Martini : the money issue remains the biggest challenge of all. Yet last year we proved with a lot of grassroots organizing that there are limits to its influence. The key is people taking the issue into the voting booth. I also think that the internet and blogging has provided accountability to the media which has been absent.
<!old gold says:
Senator Kerry, I think the best way to get the Republicans to embrace this is to emphasize that the green revolution can put green in their wallets.
John Kerry says:
old gold : we put a lot of emphasis in the book on the ability to make money. It’s a legitimate incentive- especially because the opponents put such emphasis on the economic argument. They always claim everyone will lose their job and it will kill the economy. As we point out in the book the experience of the Clean Air Act in 1990 contradicts that. The industry said it would kill them and cost 8 billion. We did it in less time and at way less cost and the economy grew like wild fire!
Muzzy says:
Sen. Kerry – JF’s question above about how to enlist ‘red state’ people into the effort to preserve global climate change reminds me of a view you described during the last presidential campaign: that improving energy efficiency is a matter of national security.
Clearly it’s more than that, but I think this is an important point that can be understood by all Americans including our more hawkish brethren. Have you elaborated your thoughts along that line of thinking in the last few years as a way to enjoin more people?
John Kerry says:
Muzzy : It’s even more of a security issue now. We’re working on a project to make sure more people understand the security implications. What folks need to focus on is that dealing global warming brings multiple benefits: better security, better health, more jobs, better environment, and we live up to our generational legacy obligations.
One comment that came after the chat was over may be of interest to some:
Professor Foland says:
Senator Kerry–
I’ve been a physics professor at a school in Cambridge, and have been in your office with some of our compatriots here talking with Jon Jennings, which I’ve appreciated the chance to do.
I just wanted to reinforce something I think you’ve clearly understood about science, from my own experience. Which is that every scientific understanding comes with a lot of pain, and backtracking, and confusions along the way. Long after the conclusion is understood, those confusions and errors remain in the record. But that doesn’t mean there is, at the end of the day, any actual doubt.
I also think that James Hansen’s recent article for the scientific community might be helpful to you when speaking to scientists and understanding how we think about making firm statements. My own summary might be, that we like to be 100% sure even when timely action only really requires 90% certainty…
And finally, Pachacutec weighed in with this one!
Pachacutec says:
Welcome, Senator. I’m sorry I’m late. I’m visiting my father in NY and I’m afraid he had me watching a DVD replay of Mookie Wilson’s ground ball to Buckner in game 6. I’m glad the Sox finally won, though, and am excited about your book. Thanks so much for joining us today (and the Yankees are in last place today. . . good times!).
John Kerry says:
I read with glee that the Yankees are in last place and Boston in first but it’s early!!!!!
Hop on over to Firedoglake and read the whole exchange. Then say hi to the nice people at FDL who hosted this chat.
UPDATE @ 3:30 PM ET:
Here’s the Ed Schultz show audio:
John Kerry discusses Dick Cheney and the war in Iraq with Ed Schultz – April 25, 2007

What a great opportunity for a political person to engage in on-line chats and discussions! You would imagine that a senator would not normally get that opportunity; and as anybody who has engaged in on-line communications knows, it has its own dynamic. It’s probably a communication style that all concerned political people should test out for themselves just to find out what that dynamic is. It probably changes with each forum or “blog,” but it’s always somewhat compelling to communicate in this way.
Thanks for the link to the FDL live blog. I thought it was a great discussion, and am always impressed with Sen. Kerry’s ability to fit in with the blogger style and atmosphere, which is actually easier said than done for folks who aren’t on blogs all the time. I think he gets that bloggers are the future, and a way to circumvent the disappointing media, who don’t seem to be willing or able to do their job as watchdogs anymore. But bloggers are so much more than alternative media—they are ordinary citizens, activists IRL (in real life), and also provide a view from the ground far away from DC. There is no amount of money that can re-create what bloggers have just by being themselves. It really is heartening to see someone in Washington recognize what this internet phenomenon means, and I think Sen. Kerry deserves a lot of credit for that.
JK on Ed Schultz now… pointing out that the election happened in November and that Cheney and Bush don’t want to acknowledge it.
“We don’t trust these guys, Ed. It’s that simple. They’ve been wrong and wrong and wrong and wrong.” I love it.
JK is really laying it on the line. “They claim we’re interfering with their management of the war—well, of course we are, because they’re *not* managing it effectively.”
President mischaracterizing and misleading Americans by calling the bill the ‘surrender bill’.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard the word ‘stupid’ pronounced with quite as much scorn as it just was.
As in ‘what a stupid statement’.
Ed: JK is one of Ed’s favorite guests!
Who will win the veto battle, what next?
JK: We will pass the supplemental, but with restraints on the pres., because a change is needed in direct. “We don’t trust these guys… they’ve been wrong and wrong and wrong and wrong.” Cheney has been wrong over and over again about WMDs, succeeding in Iraq/Afghanistan, and insurgency being in last throes. Why should we listen to them? We have to interfere with management of the war, because they mismanage.
JK just called Pres.’ characterization of the Iraq bill stupid. It is not surrender, but a way to leverage behavior of Iraqis. Admin takes as long as it wants to do whatever they want, it hurts the troops, and it’s a disgrace.
They take as long as they want while our kis get blown up and sent to Walter Reed and get shunted around, as we’ve seen recently.
LOL! JK saying Dick Cheney has a 9% approval rating, so he has a base of 9%.
Putting American lives at risk in order to pursue some path that is not going to work.
Where is negotiation, summit?
Generals even talk about this not working anymore.
He’s telling the truth, straight out, as usual. It’s so healing to hear it…
Ed: Is this their last card to play?
JK: Well, there are ways to do this - diplomacy, political solution, summit, and they won’t do that.
Ed: Do they need more troops?
JK: Theoretically, except the surge won’t work anyway. The insurgents will hide for a while, and then come out and attack pockets of Americans.
What will happen with more troops;
Insurgents will retreat for a while to do reconnaisance of new troops and once they know the troops movements, they will attack again, and that is precisely what has been happening.
Only 2 choices:
- To sit down and do serious diplomacy
- Or to continue to do things that don’t work.
Everything that Kerry said would happen did happen with the surge.
He’s angry today.
Ed; Was Reid correct when he said war was lost.
JK; Everybody has a way of putting it. We need to find a way to stabilize region enough to get troops home. In terms of broken promises etc, yes war is lost.
Only way to resolve this is to settle differences between Iraqi stakeholders. Doesn’t want our guys stuck in the middle of a civil war. Everyone will use own language to describe what’s going on, understands what Reid is saying because promises to Iraq has been broken. JK believes a level of stability and accomplishment can be achieved, and troops should come home.
“There’s an arrogance to the policy…that is a complete reminder of what happened in Vietnam…similar lack of candor with the American people…generation that was supposed to have learned those lessons turn their back on them.”
Ed; did you ever think we’d get ourselves into a mess like this again, after Vietnam?
JK; No, I didn’t. A lot of similarities to Vietnam. Distressing to see a generation so willfully and obtusely ignore lessons of Vietnam and get us into this again.
Well JK didn’t pull any punches.
We’ll leave the blog open for awhile so you can post about any good comments that follow up in the next segment on Ed’s show.
Ed: Do you believe we’re living through Vietnam again?
JK: Lack of candor, arrogance, misunderstanding of culture is very shocking and very similar to admin during Vietnam. The generation that should have learned from Vietnam is now making the same mistakes in Iraq.
“willfully and obtusely turned their backs” (on the lessons of Vietnam).
Caller just now mentions that Sen. Kerry has signed onto a bill that will give troops 4 billion Dollars more than Bush/Repubs would give, but it would be for Walter Reed, Vets, etc.
Jeff in CO calling in: Republicans are wrong on pork & spending - at least Mr. Kerry signed onto a bill that gave 4 billion more for places like Walter Reed than the president asked for.
I’ll update the blog post with the audio and transcript from JK’s chat with Ed Schultz as soon as they’re available. Audio should be up shortly.
Great stuff. That was an informative chat session at FDL.
Also, thanks for the excellent live blogging. I’m looking forward to listening to the program later.
I just read the Slate small business blog and it’s as good as the radio show and FDL. It is amazing how many things he’s currently involved with - all the big issues.
Well, before this day is over, I just want it posted on the John Kerry website that he did a great service yesterday for the American people and everyone else who is suffering due to the terribly ineffective leadership of our current Administration. The words are not coming easy to me now, but I think there are probably a lot of people who join me in this feeling but don’t feel comfortable writing to the blog. So just for all of us who feel this way, let me say thank you, John Kerry, for all that you have done so far for us and request you to please continue to help us get beyond this unspeakable nightmare.
I am concerned that many Democrates are voting to let illegal immigrants get social security. I received an email that Mr Kerry voted to let them in on Social Security. Is this true?
Dear Senator Kerry,
Please support S.311 and stop the useless slaughter of horses. I recieved a notice from the ASPCA outlining the problem. I am amazed that 90,000 horses are killed each year for human consumption in this country! For what? SPAM? I didn’t see information regarding this issue on your site so I thought I would simply write to you on your blog asking for your support.
What I did see was your information on Iraq. I am going to sign-up and check out your get out of Iraq site. Don’t you feel that the administration will try and do everything to allow this mess to continue until 2008 and then turn around and point fingers at the Democrats, who will surely win then, about what a mess they, meaning the democrats, had put us into?
Hi, Janet. If you go to http://www.senate.gov and search the THOMAS database for “S.311”, you will see that Senator Kerry is a co-sponsor of that bill
