JK on DomeNation & Today’s Agenda
JK on DomeNation with Jerome Armstrong and David All. They had a very interesting conversation covering a lot of territory including how technology like blogging and youtube are changing politics. h/t to mydd
Also on today’s agenda:
The Congressional Quarterly (subscrip only) noted that JK and Sen. Russ Feingold “plan to offer an amendment to the Water Resources Development Act (S 1248) that would require the Army Corps of Engineers to plan for the impact of a warming climate on water projects. The bill is slated to move to the Senate floor as early as Tuesday.” It will “put the Senate on record in support of scientific predictions that global warming may lead to rising sea levels, droughts and more intense storms.
<!The Kerry-Feingold amendment would require the corps to take into account the latest scientific projections of climate science when planning how to proceed on navigation, flood-control and coastal restoration projects. Supporters say the plan would mandate consideration of the costs and benefits associated with the loss and protection of wetlands, flood plains and other systems that may be vulnerable to warmer temperatures. For instance, because wetlands serve as a buffer between land and water and can mitigate the intensity of hurricanes, the amendment would require the corps to consider reconstructing wetlands in lieu of structural barriers.
The Commerce Committee is considering a number of amendments focused on fuel economy and CAFE standards today. The Washington Post describes a few of the interested parties in this article. Congress Daily (subscrip only) CAFE standard to be 31 miles per gallon by 2015.
The Buffalo News has an article, “Fuel economy drive gaining momentum”, which wraps up a lot of what’s going on and includes this quote from JK:
“We have a whole new set of facts staring us in the face,” said Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass. “We have a 10-year window in which to deal with climate change.”

Okay, that was fun!! I thought there was some good serious discussion, as well as some excellent fluff, where the Senator pulled out all his techno gadgets. I also liked the church bells going off in the distance in Wash. DC, something you would never hear in the sterile studios of cable tv.
Sen. Kerry really nailed it when he talked about the cynicism of media. I have seen its effects first hand in people who only get their news from the MSM, and come away with false notions that *all* politicians are corrupt. I hope that in 10 years, more people will get their info from original sources, and actually be able to verify the good OR bad deeds of our elected officials.
And, finally, nice shout out to Diane Birnbaum from the good senator! Diane—you’re one of the best, and that is way cool that you got that mention!
Senator Kerry was great in this interview. It is so nice and surprising too, that he would take the time to be interviewed by these bloggers. The Senator’s answers were open and honest and I liked the comments about having nothing to fear if you are being honest. Suggesting people go to this site if they have questions and want answers was a wonderful way to relay that he is listening and reading what the people are saying. How much more accessable can he get?
Oh, and LOL the information on the bike he has for sale- priceless.
Very nice and relaxed interview. It’s god to see Senator Kerry reaching out to the internet community. Here is where the future lies, imo. The mainstream media, because of its cynicism and laziness may well become obsolete.
On a lighter note - boy do I wish I had the money to buy that Harley off the good Senator!
That was great! Freedom of information means you have to accept the bad with the good, but it’s great that there are more ways to get information than having to rely on the MSM. Very cool!
Wonderful, informative interview.
I loved the Senator’s comment about keeping in touch with Vanessa while she was in Europe. My kids have been doing a lot of traveling lately to out-of-the-way places, and being able to keep track of them on the internet has been a huge benefit to my peace of mind - especially when they are without a phone.
A lot of politicians have a web presence these days, but you don’t get the feeling from most of them that it is part of their everyday lives. It seems mostly to be used as a communication tool by staff. Not that there’s anything wrong with that - but in the immortal words of - um, someone - they can’t just forever use the web as a giant ATM machine. People can tell the difference.
Fabulous interview! And hooray for mention of Diane Birnbaum!
I still grieve over the outcome of 2004, but I find it thrilling to see Sen. Kerry out there, leading us anyway, with truth and integrity, and fashion-forward technology. All this , and he’s a motorcycle rider, too!
Finally had a chance to drop by and see the interview. I’ll have to concur with everyone else here - great interview JK! Very smooth. In fact, JK came across better then his interviewers - Jerome Armstrong and David All.
The interview came across like the talk JK (and THK) gave in Seattle, again very smooth.
Good job JK.
Dear Senator Kerry,
Please count Ohio’s ballots soon, before Hurricane season to save our families on the coast. And, please count Ohio’s ballots soon especially since the Climate is collapsing faster than scientist had thought. Who really knows when that tipping point is past beyond which there will be no recovery? But, we know that the GOP is ignoring the problem.
Also, the bees colonies are dying out this year. Bees need to be recovered now or next year will also be a disaster.
Dear Senator Kerry,
If voter disenfranchisement bills pass in Texas, my vote in 2008 and beyond may not ever count again (already problematic with the Republican owned No Evidence and Hidden Evidence Voting machines with which you have had to deal [will deal?]). Our political power is being taken by elites who do not have the skills (or intention if apocalyptic) for us to survive climate crisis which can become climate collapse.
Instead of waiting voteless and so powerless, for a meaningless 2008 election while our rulers drive us all over a cliff with Climate Collapse, we need to consider something different and meaningful.
If you are waiting to be asked, then I am begging, please count Ohio’s votes. And, if you won, then hire Al Gore, John Edwards, Jim Webb, Nancy Pelosi, John Conyers and James Lee Witt among other caring and competent people to clean up the Bush/GOP disasters, help us through hurricane season, and save our Democracy, our Planet, and therefore, Us.
Thank you for your consideration,
An Al Gore Fan and a John Kerry Fan
FYI:
Are Rove’s missing e-mails the smoking guns of the stolen 2004 election?
by Bob Fitrakis and Harvey Wasserman
April 25, 2007
E-mails being sought from Karl Rove’s computers, and recent revelations about critical electronic conflicts of interest, may be the smoking guns of Ohio’s stolen 2004 election. A thorough recount of ballots and electronic files. preserved by a federal lawsuit, could tell the tale.
snip
But overall, the electronic record of every vote in Ohio was transmitted to the Secretary of State’s office, and hosted in real time in Chattanooga. Under such circumstances, the joint hosting of the White House e-mail system and accessibility by Blackwell and Rove to the same computer networks linked to the Ohio vote count, takes on an added dimension.
Mike Connell, a Republican computer expert, helped create the software for both Ohio’s official 2004 election web site, and for the Bush campaign’s partisan web site during the 2000 election. The success of Connell’s GovTech Solutions has been attributed by Connell to his being “loyal to my network,” including the Bush family.
snip
It may also be possible to learn what roles—-electronic or otherwise—-Karl Rove and J. Kenneth Blackwell really did play during those crucial 90 minutes in the deep night, when the presidency somehow slipped from John Kerry to George W. Bush.
