Thanks for the links, jk.com!  And for the round-up.  I had no idea so many folks were weighing in on TMOE!  All this extra reading is helping to take my mind off the fact that I had to miss the Women’s Health & the Environment conference today.  Well done, all!

And also thank you to Violet!  This is a great resource.  But I can’t help but wonder why we are not having these discussions on the John Kerry website.  There is so much to talk about, and I am sure many people are privately very concerned about the environmental situation.  Why are we not spending more time introducing discussions about the book as well as these other issues?

I haven’t finished the book yet myself; but I have noticed one area of technical difficulty with the book, which is that you can’t always tell who is the author—John Kerry or Teresa—of the various chapters or subchapters.

For instance, the name “Teresa:” as the author of a particular subchapter in Chapter One, “The Art of the Possible,” suddenly appears to begin the subchapter, “Reinventing a City”; and then you see her name again to begin Chapter Two, “A Body of Evidence.”  And then you don’t see either one of their names again until the name “John:” appears in a subchapter of Chapter Three, “A Matter of Justice.”  Then it isn’t until Chapter Four, “The Water of Life” that the name “John:” appears again right at the beginning.  And again you find his name at the beginning of Chapter Five, “Global Climate Change: The Decisive Decade.”  Then his name appears again in a subchapter of Chapter Five, “Turning Our Backs on the Future.”  Then again he begins Chapter Six, “Drill, Then Drill Some More: Energy Opportunity Lost.”  Again Chapter Seven begins—“Prospecting for the Future”—with “John:”  And then there is no name attributed to the “Conclusion.”

So what happened to Teresa as the book progressed?  I never saw her name again after the first couple of chapters, but I must assume that she wrote within some of the other chapters.  Or maybe not.

But that’s my only confusion with the book, and that is just a technical problem.  Other than that, it is a really informative and fascinating collection of very pertinent information.

Jeanne,

The answer is yes to both questions.

Posted by Violet | 04/21/07, 02:20 PM EST

It’s actually an important point because you need to know as you are reading the book who is authoring the chapter that you are reading.  It’s a foundational thing; and without that knowledge, you are left a little groundless.  I think this is why I am having some trouble finishing the book, or just reading it as a whole, as much as I am enjoying it.

Do you think somebody could clarify who is authoring which chapter of the book in a posting on the John Kerry website?  I, for one, would appreciate it a lot.

I’ve posted some pictures of today’s Cambridge book talk at the DU Kerry group. Both John Kerry and Teresa looked absolutely great!

Violet,

Thanks.  I’ll tune in and watch it.

Posted by Jeanne | 04/21/07, 06:09 PM EST

LadyLove,

Ch. 1 was written by both.  Ch. 2 & 3 by THK.  Ch. 4-7 by JK and the Conclusion was written by both of them as well.

Posted by Violet | 04/22/07, 03:50 AM EST

Violet:

Well, that wraps that up.  Now I can settle down to reading the book without distraction.  Thanks!

Posted by LadyLove | 04/22/07, 11:58 AM EST

Actually, Violet, I don’t think what you say above is all that accurate.  I assumed that you were speaking from some kind of knowledge and didn’t investigate it any further; but obviously there are a few discrepancies because, as in the case of Chapter One, Teresa’s name suddenly appears as a subchapter; so apparently they began Chapter One together and then Teresa finished the chapter starting with “Reinventing a City” by herself.  And I suppose I could assume that Teresa writes all of Chapter Two and Chapter Three up until you see the name “John:”  So anyway, that’s about as close as I am going to get for now, and I suppose it’s clear enough.  Thanks again.
