Kerry: “If anyone owes our troops in the fields an apology, it is the President”
Transcript of John Kerry Responding to Attacks on his Remarks
Today in a press conference in Seattle, Washington, John Kerry responded to Republican attacks and partisan efforts to distort his botched George Bush joke.
Below is a transcript of Kerry’s remarks, as delivered:
SENATOR KERRY: Let me make it crystal clear, as crystal clear as I know how: I apologize to no one for my criticism of the president and of his broken policy.
If anyone owes our troops in the fields an apology, it is the President and his failed team and a Republican majority in the Congress that has been willing to stamp—rubber-stamp policies that have done injury to our troops and to their families.
My statement yesterday - and the White House knows this full well - was a botched joke about the president and the president’s people, not about the troops.
The White House’s attempt to distort my true statement is a remarkable testament to their abject failure in making America safe. It’s a stunning statement about their willingness to reduce anything in America to raw politics. It’s their willingness to distort, their willingness to mislead Americans, their willingness to exploit the troops, as they have so many times at backdrops, at so many speeches at which they have not told the American people the truth.
I’m not going to stand for it.
<!-more->
What our troops deserve is a winning strategy. And what they deserve is leadership that is up to the sacrifice that they’re making.
Sadly, this is the best that this administration can do in a month when we have lost 100 young men and women who have given their lives for a failed policy.
Over half the names on the Vietnam wall were put there after our leaders knew that our policy was wrong. And it was wrong that leaders were quiet then, and I’m not going to be quiet now.
This is a textbook Republican campaign strategy: Try to change the topic; try to make someone else the issue; try to make something else said the issue, not the policy, not their responsibility.
Well, everybody knows it’s not working this time, and I’m not going to stand around and let it work. If anyone thinks that a veteran, someone like me, who’s been fighting my entire career to provide for veterans, to fight for their benefits, to help honor what their service is, if anybody thinks that a veteran would somehow criticize more than 140,000 troops serving in Iraq and not the president and his people who put them there, they’re crazy.
It’s just wrong. This is a classic GOP textbook Republican campaign tactic.
I’m sick and tired of a bunch of despicable Republicans who will not debate real policy, who won’t take responsibility for their own mistakes, standing up and trying to make other people the butt of those mistakes.
I’m sick and tired of a whole bunch of Republican attacks, most of which come from people who never wore the uniform and never had the courage to stand up and go to war themselves.
Enough is enough. We’re not going to stand for this. This policy is broken. And this president and his administration didn’t do their homework. They didn’t study what would happen in Iraq. They didn’t study and listen to the people who were the experts and would have told them.
And they know that’s what I was talking about yesterday. I’m not going to be lectured by a White House or by the likes of Rush Limbaugh who’s taking a day off from mimicking and attacking Michael J. Fox, who’s now going to try to attack me and lie about me and distort me.
No way. It disgusts me that a bunch of these Republican hacks who’ve never worn the uniform of our country are willing to lie about those who did.
It’s over.
This administration has given us a Katrina foreign policy: mistake upon mistake upon mistake; unwilling to give our troops the armor that they need; unwilling to have enough troops in place; unwilling to give them the Humvees that they deserve to protect them; unwilling to have a coalition that is adequate to be able to defend our interests.
Our own intelligence agency has told us they’re creating more terrorists, not less. They’re making us less safe, not more.
I think Americans are sick and tired of this game. These Republicans are afraid to stand up and debate a real veteran on this topic. And they’re afraid to debate—you know, they want to debate straw men because they’re afraid to debate real men.
Well, we’re going to have a real debate in this country about this policy. The bottom line is: These Republicans want to distort this policy. And, this time, it won’t work because we are going to stay in their face with the truth.
And no Democrat is going to be bullied by these people, by these kinds of attacks that have no place in American politics. It’s time to set our policy correct.
They have a stand-still-and-lose policy in Iraq and they have a cut-and-run policy in Afghanistan. And the fact is, our troops, who have served heroically, who deserve better, deserve leadership that is up to their sacrifice, period.
QUESTION: Senator, John McCain said that you owe an apology to the many thousands of Americans serving in Iraq, who answered this country’s call because they are patriots.
To those people who didn’t get your joke, who may have misinterpreted you as saying the undereducated are cannon fodder, what do you say?
KERRY: I never said that, and John McCain knows I’ve never said that and John McCain knows I wouldn’t say that.
And John McCain ought to ask for an apology from Donald Rumsfeld for making the mistakes he’s made. John McCain ought to ask for an apology from this administration for not sending in enough troops.
He ought to ask for an apology for putting our troops on the line with a policy that doesn’t have an adequate coalition, that doesn’t have adequate diplomacy, where we don’t have a strategy to win.
And what we need is to debate the real issues, not these phony, sideline issues that are part of the politics. Americans are tired—sick and tired of this kind of politics.
They know my true feelings. They know I fought to provide additional money for veterans. They know I fought to provide money for combat for veterans. They know I’ve fought to put money for V.A. They know I’ve honored those veterans.
They know that this is the finest military - and I’ve said it 100,000 times - that we’ve ever had. They know precisely what I was saying.
And they’re trying to turn this because they have a bankrupt policy and they can’t defend it to the nation and they can’t defend it to the world.
KERRY: And I’m not going to stand for this anymore; period. That’s the apology that people ought to get.
QUESTION: Do you need to go to joke school?
KERRY: Sure.
QUESTION: Senator, do you regret saying the remark? And what were you trying to say?
KERRY: Very simple: that those who didn’t study it properly, those who made the decisions, they got us into Iraq. Very simple.
The fact is they know that. The administration knows that. And they’re simply trying to distort this. They’re trying to play a game.
And, again, I’m not going to stand for it. This is the kind of thing that makes Americans sick. People know—I mean, there ought to be some level of honor and trust in this process.
I have fought a lifetime on behalf of veterans. We have the finest young men and women serving us in the United States military that we’ve ever had, and I’m proud of that.
But this administration has let them down, and that was clearly a remark directed at this administration. They understand it. They want to distort it. It’s a classic Republican playbook. They want to change the topic.
We’re not going to let them change the topic. The topic is their failed policy in Iraq. The topic is that they don’t have a strategy, they don’t have a way to be able to win.
You got Dick Cheney saying everything’s just terrific in Iraq only a week ago. John McCain ought to ask for an apology from Dick Cheney for misleading America. He ought to ask for an apology from the president for lying about the nuclear program in Africa. He ought to ask for an apology for once again a week ago referring to Al Qaida as being the central problem in Iraq, when Al Qaida is not the central problem.
Enough is enough. I’m not going to stand for these people trying to shift the topic and make it politics. America deserves a real discussion about real policy. And that’s what this election is going to be about next Tuesday.
One more question, then I got to run.
QUESTION: (OFF-MIKE)
KERRY: Let me tell you something: I’m not going to give them one ounce of daylight to spread one of their lies and to play this game ever, ever again. That is a lesson I learned deep and hard.
And I’ll tell you: I will stand up anywhere across this country and take these guys on. This is dishonoring not just the troops themselves by pointing the finger at the troops, it’s abusing the troops. They’re using the troops. They’re trying to make the troops into the target here. I didn’t do that, and they know that.
KERRY: And for them to suggest that somebody who served their country, as I did, and has a record like I have in the United States Congress of standing up and fighting for the troops would ever, ever insult the troops is an insult in and of itself.
And they owe us an apology for even daring to use the White House to stand up and make this an issue again. Shame on them. Shame on them.
And may the American people take that shame to the polls with them next Tuesday.
Thank you all.
QUESTION: What do you say to the men and women fighting in Iraq if they hear this in passing, that may be confused on the issue, sir?
KERRY: They will hear what I just said. I honor their service, and I always have.

You are a disgrace Senator. As a proud servicemember I am ashamed to have you in the US Senate. I believe your comments have shown us a nice little Freudian slip of where your beliefs really are.

Can you obtain and make available the entire video, showing the comments in context?
Even if your comment was a botched George Bush joke, do you, Senator Kerry, really believe that his so called failed policy in Iraq is something to laugh at? I don’t believe the policy is failing as bad as you want. And most Americans don’t believe that making fun of a policy that has put our troops in harms way is fodder for yuks.
You’re disgraceful. You’re chief of staff needs to be fired for not stopping you from saying what you said yesterday and now today.
Disgraceful; you’re an utter failure.

My spouse & I are both veterans. You are a complete embarrassment to not only the uniform but the American people.
To Ben Harris:
If anyone wonders what John Kerry’s beliefs really are, they should look at his record: how he’s fought for benefits and respect for our troops, how he’s spoken out again and again as this Administration has used and misused and abused our troops, how he’s attended funerals for service members in Massachusetts (when is George Bush going to attend a funeral for even one of the soldiers he’s sacrificed?), and how he has always, always, always been on the side of the troops. Look at his record and judge the truth for yourself, rather than listen to right-wing spin.
Once more Sen. Kerry attacks and insults our service men and women. A joke? Please! We got a true sense of what the senator really thinks. No wonder this fool couldn’t win the presidency. Only in Massachusetts could this patrician empty-suit gigolo win an election.
Response to the dishonest attacks on John Kerry at Liberal Values:

It is a shame that these people prefer to avoid discussion of the issues by spreading such information as to what Kerry actually believes.
I have no idea how you became a senator in my beloved country. I am a military wife and it makes me irate to listen to you constantly put down our troops. You definitely need to apologize to all troops and their families. There is no place in the senate for a veteran who constantly and continuously defecates on the very people that protect your freedom. Shame on you, Mr. Kerry!!!
Thanks for the new thread Dick!

I am SO glad Sen. Kerry did not take the shameless GOP distortions of his remarks lying down. Only an idiot would think he could insult our troops. It was obvious to anyone but a cretin that
he meant BUSH was “stuck” in Iraq, not our brave, betrayed-by-Bush soldiers.
Sen. Kerry did not hide behind deferments or National Guard service in the 1960s as Cheney and Bush and others of their sorry ilk were! How dare these mealy-mouthed hypocrites attack a genuine hero like Sen. Kerry? And shame on the dupes who are insulting him in these blogs and asking for an apology. He spoke the truth about the liar and coward Bush.
I am sad to see that an otherwise good man, Sen. McCain, fell victim to the lying spin given to Sen. Kerry’s remarks. I hate to think that John McCain purposely misinterpreted the remarks. I hope he simply misunderstood, but he has no business calling for an apology. Sen. Kerry has every right to be proud of himself.
Sen. Kerry is so far the superior candidate for our nation that it is absurd for anyone to doubt it! And now that the truth is finally coming out (2 years too late!) about the cheating in Ohio and elsewhere, via Diebold and other methods, more Americans realize that Bush and Co. stole 2004 as surely as they stole 2000!
John Kerry,
You were a coward in Vietnam and you are still a coward just as John Murtha is. I had friends die in Vietnam and my daughter (who by the way was a straight A student) before joining the Air Force and going to Irqa. You cou care less about our troops. I was supporting many Democrats this election but after listening to you, John Murtha, and Howard Dean- I have changed my mind. You need to appoligize to our troops. I don’t care what you say about the President or the Republicans, but between the threr of you and being a big supporter of Joe Liberman and watching the way you have kicked him to the curb makes you a loser.

John Kerry said what?!
By Michelle Malkin · October 31, 2006 12:32 AM
***10/31 7:35am updated with more reax below…
...909am update San Gabriel Valley Tribune/Pasadena Star News reports on the Angelides campaign event at Pasadena City College where Kerry trashed the troops…”Kerry then told the students that if they were able to navigate the education system, they could get comfortable jobs – “If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq,” he said to a mixture of laughter and gasps.”***
—-
A general rule of thumb regarding controversies like this is to count how many posts Michelle Malkin has about the issue, and to note that there is a positive correlation to how trivial the matter is and how many posts she has about it. At my last count, she had four on her site, two on her spin-off site Hot Air (who I still think ripped their name off from me). That would tell me that this issue would be somewhere between Cindy Sheehan and crescent-shaped 9/11 memorials and Terri Schaivo in importance, but the possibility is there for a new record.
Predictably, lamentably, the right-wing blogosphere is grievously insulted and has put the grass-roots outrage machine in high gear. Expect record levels of umbrage from all corners.
I wish Kerry had not made the remark (even though he was trying to insult the President and not the troops), but I do find it a little amusing that the people who are ‘upset’ about this remark managed (if my memory is correct) to remain completely silent about this:
I am sure we all remember the Bush supporters wearing fake purple heart stickers at the 2004 RNC to mock Kerry’s service. Additionally, I note that Malkin and company have not yet moved to condemn the treatment Vietnam war hero Jim Webb is getting at the hands of Red State, where he has been compared to John Mark Karr and today called a pervert.
Of course, the ‘libertarian’ reaction is predictably ‘nuanced.’ Well, no, it really isn’t:

JOHN KERRY —a gift that keeps on giving. Unfortunately, it’s a gift for the Republicans. . . .
Kerry’s suggestion that the troops in Iraq are dumb failures is not only reprehensible, but false on the facts. In other words, a typical Kerry performance, just in time for the elections. Democrats must be wondering what they were thinking to nominate him in 2004, and why he won’t go away now.
——
Glenn then links to numerous outraged (OUTRAGED) folks alternately condemning Kerry and demanding an apology. A snide observer (and I am one), might wryly note that Glenn thinks the mainstream media always drops the ball, paying too much attention to trivial issues rather than issues of importance, and that is why the blogosphere is so important- to provide real reporting. I guess Glenn is right- who needs the mainstream media when you have tons of bloggers who can treat elections like games and horse races?
Again, I wish Kerry had not made the remark (or phrased it better), but really, it changes nothing.
The Republican party has no plan for Iraq other than rhetorical shifts, their policies are not constructed or implemented to actually accomplish anything but rather to maintain Congressional power, and we all will be better off if the GOP is swept out of power.
The Republicans are corrupt, morally bankrupt, have no ideas, no principles, and are hoping upon hope that this latest distraction will help to stop the bleeding. Unfortunately, the bleeding they care about is at the polls and not the bleeding in Iraq.
And another thing . . .
To all the defenders of his idiotic remarks about our soldiers who think we are listenting to right-wing propaganda, you are wrong.
We listen close to what Mr. Kerry says. He speaks well enough for himself and he is a disgrace because of what he says.
Jason M.
Dear Mrs Brown,
I have never, ever heard John Kerry put down our troops. I *have* heard him speak out many times against an Administration that belittles and dishonors their service by denying their benefits, cutting their pay, refusing to provide proper equipment, and most of all, putting them in harm’s way without a plan. The Republicans would like you to believe that Kerry’s criticisms of George Bush’s cluelessness are somehow a slam on the troops. The truth is that John Kerry has always been on the side of the troops and will be until his dying day.
I am one of your constituents, and I am ashamed to say I am from Massachusetts! You are a disgusting human being and I will guarantee that I will work extremely hard to remove you form office when you are up for reelection. Are you that stupid, well you did score less then the president while at Yale, so I guess you are. I will be distributing the video to everyone I can, to show then your true colors.
Disgusted Massachusetts voter
In 1971, our troops were murderers per John Kerry. Now they are just ignorant. I guess he’s mellowing out a bit in his old age.
Where would we get the idea that Kerry disrepects our soldiers?
Dec. 4, 2005 on Face the Nation with Bob Schieffer.
Sen. Kerry: “And there is no reason, Bob, that young American soldiers need to be going into the homes of Iraqis in the dead of night, terrorizing kids and children, you know, women…”
Maybe the senator just had his Botox shot and couldn’t speak correctly.
Thank you for the timely reminder of why we should all be grateful Mr. Kerry is not our Commander-in-Chief! I think few Americans felt as though they were watching a future president when Mr. Kerry went off on his rant this afternoon. Great timing!!!
I’m a dem. and I voted for Kerry for president, and to be honest I would not do so again based on his comment and this excuse.
I think Kerry might be making a political move to defend himself and not apologize to look tough but to be honest I think he should say he is sorry because a fair interpretation of what he said was offensive to the troops, if not the most likely interpretation.
To all the right-wing trolls that are coming here and pretending to be righteously outraged:
Don’t bother. Just don’t even bother. Your game isn’t fooling anyone.
Kerry threw down the gauntlet today. You don’t like the remarks he made in the press conference? It makes you uncomfortable that he’s striking back against this stuff instead of taking it lying down? Well, maybe you should send a note to FOX news and your Republican friends in Washington telling them that they brought this upon themselves. THEY attempted to make an issue of “dark humor” about Bush, and if that hadn’t happened, this press conference ripping them to pieces wouldn’t have happened.
I’m not sure how anyone can take what was said any other way than how it was said. It may have been a mistake to have said it, but it’s too late now. Not funny!
I’m not listening to “right-wing spin” I’m listening to what John Kerry said.
I take John Kerry as a whole and not a sound bite. He has been a great asset to our country. For those who will grasp anthing to attack him I am ashamed. I support our troops as he does, but not the people who put them there. Our military and their families should be proud of their service but should be greatly upset about what sent them to Iraq. I hope John Kerry and others will keep the truth coming about this war.
Senator Kerry.
At such a crucial time in the midterm election process, how can you even think for one second that a joke like this is appropriate. With the democratic party finally having some hope for recapturing both houses and the american people having hope of crawling out from underneath in oppressive regime, your blunder has given the opposition something to talk about that pushes the Iraqi debate back into their corner.
Whether you truly believe your comments were taken out of context or not, we live in an era of horrific spin, and this is like giving Bush and company and HUGE gift just one week before we go to the polls. Do they need anymore ammunition?
You must do whatever it takes to rectify the situation (apologies?), and advance the debate back to the real issues: the disappearing middle class, Afghanistan/Iraq/Iran/North Korea (ie. ineffective, naive and arrogant foreign policies), global warming, etc.
NoisyDemocrat:
Obviously you did not hear Sen. Kerry tell the students that if they didn’t study they would end up in Iraq. Joke or no, it is an insult to our troops.
Of course, you probably think it was a slam on Bush. That’s what you get for thinking instead of listening.
I was actually going to vote for a few democrats this time. Thanks for remaining me that my party of JFK has turned into the party of arrogant SOBs. The only one who is trying to spin your disgraceful comments is you.
FROM DAILYKOS:
Who Got Us Stuck in Iraq? Tony Snow Insinuates Soldiers
by beatstreet
Tue Oct 31, 2006 at 01:21:44 PM PST
Kerry joked about a person whom he didn’t mention by name, who had gotten us stuck in Iraq, and the entire corporate-owned media concluded he was talking about the soldiers. This article proves how anyone who comes to this conclusion (Snow, McCain, and Boehner) owes the soldiers an apology.
beatstreet’s diary :: ::
It was one thing to attack Kerry for his service in Vietnam; it was one thing for Bush to bury his own combat-dodging record, but for the repubicans to ax-murder the reputation of a decorated war veteran by hacking apart his unwavering commitment those wearing the American uniform is irreprehensible.
The latest White House reputation massacre for power stems from comments Kerry made at Pasadena City College, where he told students in a round-about way that Bush has gotten us stuck in Iraq.
No surprise there. More than 70 percent of Americans have acknowledged this obvious problem. What is astonishing is that not one single “unbiased” news agency clarified that Kerry’s comments were clearly directed at George W. Bush.
Here are Kerry’s comments:
‘‘You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.’‘
Anybody beside me know which combat-dodging failure he’s talking about?
That anyone in their rational mind could conclude that Kerry was talking about the soldiers is disgraceful. To do so, one would have to believe that the US soldiers responsible for our strategic errors, and those errors rest only on the heads of the generals and Bush. This is a backhanded way of dodging responsibility for Iraq.
As long as we’re distorting facts, let me say that this looks like the beginning of a long-term strategy to distort history and ensure that future generations blame the Iraq War on the US soldiers. Why doesn’t a reporter ask Tony Snow if this is the intention of the Bush Administration?
This mirrors a pattern of republican behavior: They blame the Democrats for Mark Foley’s behavior; they blame the Democrats for North Korea’s testing of a nuclear bomb, and now they blame the US soldiers for Iraq. When will we learn that anything these Republicans do is always somebody else’s fault?
This time it isn’t going to work. The American people know who got us stuck in Iraq. It damn sure wasn’t the soldiers. They loose their lives every day trusting that their sacrifice is a step toward the conclusion of this war, but not even Bill O’Reilly is willing to say that Iraq is anything but a stalemate right now.
So it’s the soldiers’ fault, President Bush? Why should we blame the soldiers for not sending enough troops? Why is it their fault that “stay the course” hasn’t worked for three years? If anything, the Bush Administration should apologize for trying to deflect responsibility for our stuck situation in Iraq to the US soldiers.
This is going to backfire big time against not only Bush but also John McCain and House Majority John “Little” Boner, who jumped out and sucker-punched Kerry after Snow kicked him in the balls. McCain has fallen a long way over the last couple of years. He must be as desperate for power as Bush. This will be remembered in 2008.
Somebody ought to find out who this reporter is who asked this question. Who is this reporter working for? I guarantee the White House planted this reporter. This has Faux News written all over it. I guarantee that the question was a setup because White House spokesman Tony Snow knew it was coming.
Here is an excerpt from the Times:
“The White House spokesman was clearly ready, consulting his notes to read a fuller account of Kerry’s statement and unleashing a sharp attack.”
Here’s Faux News giving us “fair and balanced:”
“A half-mocking Snow told reporters at the daily White House briefing that Kerry’s comments are EMBLEMATIC OF HIS DISDAIN for the military.”
What? Aren’t you going to renounce Snow for LYING? You’re going to let him get away with this self-interested, slanderous lie? Kerry ought to challenge Snow to fist-to-fist combat for slandering him so egregiously.
How about when the Moron-in-Charge made fun of “looking for the WMDs” at that press dinner a few years back—- has he apologized to the troops for sending them to fight in Iraq with a lie about WMDs - NO—and then he has the nerve to make fun of it! What a complete ass.
What this president has done to our military and to our society is so awful and so treasonous—words cannot describe my true disdain for Bush and his cronies. I only wish the military could speak out of how ill-equiped and under-manned the Idiot-in-Charge has left them in Iraq —but they cannot.
My only words to you Senator Kerry—where was this anger 2 years ago— and where is all the anger from Democrats now? How can we let those liars continue to rule from fear. I only hope than next week does bring a tidal wave.
Senator Kerry - You are a mean-spirited, sore-loser, so-liberal-you-are-a-communist idiot. You owe the military an apology. They defend your sorry ass every single day.
Kerry you are a disgrace…. Now the true reasons you lost the election are shining through the BS propaganda. YOU DO OWE AN APOLOGY TO OUR TROOPS!!!! It is obvious to all from the context of your statement that you WERE NOT TALKING ABOUT THE CURRENT ADMIN.
It’s funny to see all the misspellings and grammatical errors in the posts written by republicans.
Just can’t handle the truth, can you, republicans? The issue here is GEORGE BUSH’S LIES and DICK CHENEY’S LIES that led us into this illegal and unbelievably expensive war and the fact that we’ll BE THERE FOR YEARS thanks to Bush et al.
Thank you, Senator Kerry, for speaking the truth. The truth is poison to republicans.
To the freeper brigade, including those pretending to be former Democrats (brush up on your lying skills, by the way):
He didn’t say that students would end up in Iraq if they didn’t study hard enough. That’s just idiotic, for one simple reason: We have a VOLUNTEER MILITARY. NOT a draft in which the college deferment no longer works if they quit school. That interpretation of the comment doesn’t even make logical sense. It was obviously dark humor about Bush.
The Senator should say the following: “I botched a joke about the president - but the president has botched a war.” And Senator Kerry should say only that about it. Everyone else should say at every opportunity between now and next Tuesday: “John Kerry botched a joke about the president - but the president has botched a war.” Circulate it throughout the land, it’s a winner.
You nailed it Senator:
“They have a stand-still-and-lose policy in Iraq and they have a cut-and-run policy in Afghanistan.”
Return of the War Lords and heroin crops, rennaisance of Taleban, resurgence of oppression against women, and Afghanistan is as broken as ever and remains a haven for Al Qaeda like Pakistan, our promises of nation building long forgot. You should question why Pakistan remains untouched even after they admit to deals with Taleban to protect Al Qaeda. Why hasn’t the hunt for Osama been allowed to go to the logical ends? Why were our troops diverted to Iraq instead of finishing the real job in Afghanistan/Pakistan?
James Baker and Henry Kissinger now have the president’s ear on Iraq, and what accountability do they have to the Senate and Congress? Kissinger was part of what failed in Viet Nam. Baker has been involved in many international fiascos. Why is the president relying upon them to rescue his Iraq debacle?
Iraq is now a Catch-22 problem. Can’t ‘win’ without dividing the nation into 3 partitions. Can’t get the agreement to do so without Shiites being forced to yield majority control. Can’t get the Suni’s to trust the Shi’ites. The Kurds standing seperately will not trigger Turkish delight. Al Qaeda still recruits from the Suni clans and Shi’ites seek to vanquish Sunis and Al Qaeda.
But we also have utterly failed to tie in with Arabic ideas of justice, correct warfare, and judgment, and blurred it all into a moriband morass. Our real problem isn’t actually with those who practice Jihad. It is with those indulging in the practice of Hirab, a dirty, impure violence. If we became careful to denounce just this, we’ll probably discover a large portion of the Arab world will join us, and they’ll help us locate these. If we lack the sophistication to seperate this out, they’ll clam up and refuse to work with us. Show the Republicans what a difference a deeper, more cultured understanding can make in cutting through resistence and failure to progress.
My son is an army captain serving in Iraq. He is a distinguished military graduate from a top military school. This means he is not dumb or stupid. He serves with outstanding officers, NCO’s, and junior enlisted men. (Because he is in a combat unit there are no women serving with him). The responsibilties that he carries on his shoulder are far more than most people carry in this country. To say that he is stupid is an insult not only to our son and all the soldiers that he serves with, but to us as his parents. John Kerry says that it was a botched joke. I read what he was supposed to say….it still is an insult. I will not vote for a Democrat in this election. Way to go John Kerry! You just handed more votes to the Republicans in this election. Keep on putting your foot in your mouth so that the Republicans will win! Better yet, go to a room, lock the door, and put duct tape over your mouth. I’ll be waiting for an apologize from you on this evenings news.
Shame on you John. I also am ashamed to call my self a democrat. But…no longer. YOU have just pushed me over to the republican side. I am sorry that I ever voted for you. Shame on you…shame on me. At least I will do the right thing now.
Lets not let this uproar get out of control. Here is John Kerry’s apology:” I apologize to our troops and to the American people for having supported the resolution allowing the most ill prepared, poorly read, and maliciously intended President in the history of this country, to take us to a war that had no basis in fact or reality. As for our college students study hard, read and learn from your history so that when you become President a tragic error of this magnitude will never again occur.
Mikey51: Of course, you probably think it was a slam on Bush. That’s what you get for thinking instead of listening.
Wow.
Just… wow.
Damn those thinkers, who are interested in the full story instead of what they listen to from the Category 5 GOP spin machine.

Don:
were you really? You would be doing so because you either didn’t like the way the Iraq War has been going, figured out that having some balance in the House and Senate was going to preserve the Constitution from further deterioration by an all-republican Congress, or that you no longer believed that the President was doing a heckuva job—nor that the republicans could keep us safe—vis-a-vis Katrina.
But please, to use John Kerry’s remarks as a basis to not consider voting democrats is HIGHLY suspect and completely disingenuous.
Please tell Michelle Malkin her desperate attempt to send you here to blame John Kerry for the ills of the world won’t protect her president from the justifiable wrath formed from six years of actual experience of the waste of space and oxygen this Administration has become.
So what if John Kerry made a stupid remarks. Your president and the republican party has flushed our country down the toilet!!!!!
All of us, including politicians have slips in speech. Unfortunately, this is a more sensitive time than most. I hope this event doesn’t distract from the key issues during election time. I hope we’re also still able to win more seats in Congress.
I’m not sure how Bush’s speech at 5 is going to serve the nation. My intuition tells me he’s feeling left out after not being invited on-board for much of the campaign activity…
I believe there are more Americans who are voting candidate than party. The way parties view citizens is insulting to our intelligence. Do you believe that if the comments made regarding the troops were made by a Republican that the Dems wouldn’t be all over it? While parties are busy poking each others eyes out Americans are looking for real answers on which to base their votes. The mudslinging is absurd. To pull out our troops to look like the good guys with no real answers as to how to resolve issues in Iraq is not going to bring votes to the the Dems. Your are exploiting the war to get votes, just as you are exploiting Michael J. Fox, instead of providing real solutions and for that you do owe an apology to our troops. I don’t believe for a minute that Clinton did all that he could do nor heed the warnings that a large scale terrorist attack would take place. If Bush is solely responsible for the attacks then where was Congress and what were they doing to prepare for an attack. Stop the mudslinging and get real with the American people. We are voting for a President and Congressional leaders not the board of the WWF.
My son and thousands of more like him, did not voluntarily join the Marine Corps because they lacked intelligence or education. If you cared enough to know what our military is, you would know that they are highly educated patriots who care more about this country than you do. Don’t try to white wash your disgusting remarks against our troops by claiming it was a botched joke about President Bush and the Administration. The rest of us common folk are just as educated as our military and we know a liar when we hear one. You make me sick John Kerry. You don’t deserve the protection our military provides you.
Let’s have the discussion of who really supports the troops.
Okay, Senator Kerry forgot mis-spoke and didn’t make it clear that he was blasting Bush for getting us into Iraq, but how many times has Bush mis-spoke and gotten a free pass. Does anyone remember when Bush said that the terrorists aren’t going to stop trying to find ways to destroy America and then added, “And neither are we?”
FACT: John Kerry has supported the troops in the Senate where it counts. He’s voted for amendmendment after amendment to increase benefits and to help our troops and returning veterans only to have these bills shot down by Republican Chickenhawks.
Let’s have a real debate, not on one mis-spoken statement, but let’s examine the entire Senate record since 2004 and take an honest look at the votes.
Senator Kerry puts his deeds out in front. He doesn’t just pay lip service to our military: he actually works to see that they are treated fairly. Which is more important, working for our vets or a botched statement in one of a hundred speeches? Remember , John Kerry has been stumping non-stop and leading fundraising efforts for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans running for office. This is far more important than one mis-speak.
People must think John Kerry has nearly achieved perfection because he isn’t allowed a single mis-speak while the President of the United States and leader of the free world does it on a daily basis with impunity.
Linda, I believeRepublican is supposed to be capitalized in the context in which you chose to use it.
A wise old man once told me, “Son, don’t worry about it; if they’re out there shooting at you, then you must be doing something right.”
By that token, the wave of repetitive pugnacious posts by putatively independent people coming here this morning to vent their stage-directed spleens surely must mean that Mr. Kerry is doing something rather right indeed.
Apparently, the reich-wing sympathizers out there in blogoland are upset that their side is gettingly heavily busted on its bullspin from every side these days, so they’re blustering away in blowback mode in order to make themselves feel better. They’re sad as hell and they’re not gonna fake it anymore.
Well, as a wise young girl once told me, “Nanny nanny boo boo.” Your side can Bush it out, but you can’t take it. Somebody calls you on your dreck collection and you get a collective case of the screeching fantods in response. Tsk, tsk. Too bad, so sad.
But as for those trying to debunk the distortions and debate actual issues with the under-the-bridge crowd, here’s something else that a wise middle-aged fellow once told me, too:
“Never waste your time trying to teach a pig to sing. It wastes your time, and it annoys the pig.”
just my $.02; YMMV,
Otter
The truth is that Senator Kerry keeps dodging the issue at hand here. He tried to make a foolish joke and it backfired on him! Period. I guess I am just a dumb soldier who deserves to go to Iraq…oh I’m sorry, I have already been, and will go again! That’s funny, since I am also doing well in college….hmmmm. Guess your logic does not work on this one Senator Kerry, just like it does’nt on a number of things.
On a seperate issue, one thing that really ticks me off is that some of you “die hard” democrats REFUSE to address the PRESIDENT as such. He is not simply Bush or George. I give all respect to Senator Kerry and thus will address him as such, our President deserves that same respect! Senator Kerry, if the time ever comes and you get elected, you can expect that respect from me. But, let’s just get a simply apology and you admit that you made a mistake…..you would get so much more respect from those of us who serve!
I still think whether it what a joke toward President Bush or not it was uncalled for. Our troops are doing everything they can to help keep our nation free from terrorism. Please think before you speak.
Libs are wondering what connotation one could have taken from the senator’s words? How about:
“Study hard and get your degree. Those without the brainpower will have to join the military as a last resort.”
Where would I get this liberal claptrap? From teachers, who tell you that the military is just for hicks who can’t do any beter. How about from Charlie Rangel who proposed a bill to re-instate the draft (a bill he didn’t vote for, by the way)... in promoting the bill he said that military ranks are filled with the poor, the uneducated, and with minorities.
Gee, I don’t see minorities as a problem, why does he? Why don’t libs think that people join the military because they are patriotic and want to serve their country and countrymen. Why does it have to be a deficiency that leads some to enlist?
Poor Bushie probably wants an apology after it was explained to him that the joke was aimed at him.
How very amusing.
Fe: Of course these people weren’t considering voting Democratic. It’s a very common blog-trolling technique, pretending to be on your side (or almost on your side) but feigning outrage and whining about how whatever issue has turned them against the party forever and ever and ever.
John Kerry, you are a disgraceful person. It is hard to imagine such a disgraceful person in the senate or anywhere else in our government. I have no idea how you sleep at night. You are so out of touch with real people. Go get in one of your planes and hide in one of your mansions and leave real americans to do there work. I’m sorry, I mean your wifes planes and mansions.
There is one reason you don’t see many with a logical defense of Senator Kerry’s statement. It does not exist. Whether he was calling our military dumb, or the POTUS dumb, it’s namecalling none the less. It was a potshot and and his response today was a classic case of trying to remove the speck in his own eye, when he had an entire tree, with branches, leaves and all, sticking out of his own eye. An apology will be demanded, but will make no difference. There aren’t a whole lot of people in this country who can trust him. He’s been party to treason since he returned from Vietnam. It is morally distasteful to slander for political gain, or loss, as his latest statements have begun. Hopefully Congress and the Senate are not controlled by Democrats after this years elections. I don’t think I could stomach Senator Kerry being awarded yet another Purple Heart for shooting himself in the foot this week.
Shame on you. You are a total disgrace to your country and to your office. Move to France where you can be fully appreciated.
Mr. Kerry,
Not that I think you will ever read this or if you do, pay much attention to it but here I go anyways.
My son is stationed in Southern Baghdad. He was validictorian of his HS class and was on the dean’s honor list at Stanford, when HE choose to join the ALL volunteer Army. Not as a officer although he most certainly could of , but as a grunt. I certainly do not agree with your veiled reference to the poor or un-educated being the only people to man this countries Army. What does that say about yourself or other Democrat’s who are now riding the Veteran band wagon? Are you saying that the soldier’s of the Vietnam era were smarter and therefore better?
Am I neither a Republican nor Democrat any longer, I guess you may call me an athesist when it comes to the current polictial climate. But I am most certainly an American. For you or any candidate to so casually make remarks about the men and women who are serving America, right or wrong, on a battlefield in a foreign land is a disgrace.
Don’t attack the White House, the Congess or the soldiers, don’t condemn the Republican’s for their policy in Iraq, support the men and women who are being shot at daily. Support my son who choose to be where he is at, choose to follow others into battle who like yourself served their country in what was then (Vietnam) and is now an unpopular conflict (Iraq). When you stump against Iraq, you are standing on my son’s back. As well as the 140,000 other American there. But most sadly, for you, the 2,800 American who have died their.
I am so glad Senator Kerry is not President, can you imagine a person like this giving orders as Commander and Chief to our Troops, who apparently he thinks of as STUPID! No Mr Kerry when you don’t take education seriously, you might end up being a Junior Senator with a big mouth. Shame on you, don’t try to spin this one around you did it, be a man and own up to it!!! But of course you won’t because you are a DEMOCRAT before you are an AMERICAN. Please never visit our AMERICAN troops over in Iraq and any where else your presence would only dishonor our Brave Men and Women who serve AMERICA for all AMERICANS even you Mr Kerry. Sleep well Senator, with any luck you’ll be Mr Kerry again soon.
RESIGN YOU HYPOCRITE
Kerry was talking to students, whom who told to study, do THEIR homework, and be smart, or THEY would be stuck in Iraq. He did not say Bush was stuck, he clearly referred to our troops, people who are intelligent enough to ENLIST rather than being so stupid that they cannot do anything else.
you should be ashamed of yourself for demoralizing and undermining the american troops in iraq

....must mean our troops are doing something right in Iraq.
What a lousy human being you are John Kerry.
You’re arrogance is astonishing; how big of an ego do you have?
As a loyal Republican I would encourage you to keep speaking for the Democratic party. You are the best asset we have.
I am sure the Navy would love it if you started telling everyone you served in the Army.
Kerry supporters. Don’t spend time preaching to the choir here. Make your supportive comments on mainstream media websites like CBSnews.com for independents and Republicans to read.
Mr. Kerry,
I can not believe your comments. I have many friends who have children in the military. They are some of the best this nation has to offer! I am very proud of anyone who is in the military. How can you even say such a thing? You are a disgrace to the democratic party!
American Legion to Sen. Kerry: Apologize Now
INDIANAPOLIS, October 31, 2006 - The National Commander of The American Legion called on Sen. John Kerry to apologize for suggesting that American troops in Iraq are uneducated.
“As a constituent of Senator Kerry’s I am disappointed. As leader of The American Legion, I am outraged,” said National Commander Paul A. Morin. “A generation ago, Sen. Kerry slandered his comrades in Vietnam by saying that they were rapists and murderers. It wasn’t true then and his warped view of today’s heroes isn’t true now.”
While addressing a group of college students at a campaign rally in Pasadena, CA., Monday, Kerry suggested that they receive an education or “if you don’t, you’ll get stuck in Iraq.”
“While The American Legion shares the senator’s appreciation for education, the troops in Iraq represent the most sophisticated, technologically superior military that the world has ever seen,” Morin said. “I think there is a thing or two that they could teach most college professors and campus elitists about the way the world works.
“And while we are on the topic of education, why doesn’t the senator and his comrades in Congress improve the GI Bill so all of today’s military members – reserves and guard included – can achieve the educational aspirations that the senator so highly values?” Morin said. “The senator’s false and outrageous attack was over-the-top and he should apologize now.”
The 2.7-million member American Legion, http://www.legion.org, is the nation’s largest veterans organization.
Even I am amazed the democrats are finding a way to “flip flop” their way out of this one. Good luck even getting your power back when you are dumb enough to have leaders like Kerry, Clinton, and the rhyming reverends! God Bless our Troops!
PS. Just for the democrats here… Try to focus on the subject.
I studied hard and got pretty good grades in high school.
I chose to join the Army at 17 and was disabled and retired in 1984.
Since then I attended a pretty competitive undergrad program and am getting my masters in history - not to earn a living, but to teach.
I have been successful in corporate America and even more successful as an entrepreneur.
I am a volunteer firefighter, youth sports coach, Scoutmaster, father and husband.
I live in a state that is neither West nor East, but somewhere in the middle.
I am not a Republican or Democrat, but somewhere in the middle - but I am an American
Mr. Kerry, I don’t think you have any idea how deeply you offended most of us Americans. Quite frankly, I am disgusted that anybody would say what you said - REGARDLES OF WHAT YOU MEANT TO SAY. And then, to not offer an apology, but an attack… What were you thinking?
We have a VOLUNTEER military, Sir. Anybody that is in Iraq right now is there for one reason - because they chose to be there. Not because they didn’t study. Not because they didn’t get good grades, but because of conscious choices they made. Some of them, like me, are probably there because they believe in what we are doing and believe it is the right thing.
Before I saw your speech, I have to admit, I was pretty apolitical - ambivalent about the mid-term elections and upcoming presidential run. I am no longer. I will do whatever I can to make sure that you, and anybody from ANY party that thinks like you, are never again elected to public office.
You are killing our country. But it is your right - a couple of million Americans have given their lives to ensure that.
Please, go home and stop patronizing the rest of us. We are sick of it.
WSH
Senator Kerry you are an embarrasment as an American. During the Campaign in 2004 you said you had a plan for Iraq, a plan for victory. Why haven’t you shared it? Have all of our soldiers died while waiting for you to enlighten us all as to what we should do? These soldiers blood is on your hands Senator. You need not look farther than into a mirror to see what is wrong with this country. I served 20 years in the Air Force and I am a very proud Veteran. You owe me an apology. All the disgusting vile attacks that you and your Left wingers spew is only making the enemy stronger. Is that so hard to grasp?
I read: “Statement of John Kerry Responding to Republican Distortions, Pathetic Tony Snow Diversions and Distractions”
Was this really written and/or said by a person who once ran for President of the United States?
I don’t believe it. It’s high school level at best. And, I’m being kind.
The men and women fighting on the front line in the new World War deserve our thanks, our respect, and our admiration. It’s time to thank the American soldier. The American soldier fights for those who can’t fight for themselves. The American soldier fights for what is right and decent.
Senator Kerry,
Your supporters will not stand by idly while the neocons try to swift boat you again.
Americans are getting stuck in Iraq.
Young people are turning to the military when the economic conditions prevent them from finding needed employment.
The military is turning to drop-outs as well as patriotic young people in filling its ranks. The quagmire in Iraq is slowing recruitment for the military and the National Guard.
If you have made a verbal gaffe, you are not far from the mark. Nobody has died. Nobody has lost their arms, legs, eyes or their lives.
Political campaigns require candidates who can take a blow, stand up and keep going. America needs you to stay in the race, keep talking truth to power, and returning our nation to the values that made us great and once made us the envy of all of the nations of the world.
Rendition, Torture, loss of Habeas Corpus, outing of CIA agents, corrupt relationships with lobbyists, fraud in contracting, and dragging our nation into a war on false pretenses demands your continue efforts on behalf of all of us.
Nobody in America can carry the ball better than you. Nobody in America has the experience, wisdom, and passion that this pursuit demands.
Keep on Coming John!

John Kerry for President 2008
Is this supposed to be the transcript from a press conference? Where did Kerry find the objective reporters who asked these questions?
The first question is a dead giveaway:
“To those people who didn’t get your joke, who may have misinterpreted you as saying the undereducated are cannon fodder, what do you say?”
Who asked that question, John Kerry’s campaign manager?
Kerry, you have shamed our troops, shamed our country, and shamed your democratic party. I wasn’t 100% sure how I was going to vote until today. You made it easy to vote Republican. Your party is equally disgraceful for not having the courage to stand up to you and demand an apology.
Senator Kerry,
Your supporters will not stand by idly while the neocons try to swift boat you again.

John Kerry for President 2008
You’re pathetic! You believe I am an idiot for serving in the US Army. I have invested my master degree in working for the peace that we had in 1990, met with world leaders far beyond your abilities to arrange, volunteered for mission work with my Church, and now proudly serve along side of my brothers and sisters who practice the art of combat arms. As a volunteer who has trained under a couple of service branches, I have always stepped up to the plate when needed. I am working with many intelligent men and women who are risking their lives to restore the US. I am doing this with a broad memory of the depletion of our capabilities that you helped to put on us in the 1990’s. I remember getting ready to go back to Iraq in 1997, but Clinton coward out. That is when we lost track of Iraq’s weapons capabilities. I fully remember the horrific limitations that your party put on us when you controlled the Congress in 1983—While in Beirut we were not allowed to have our weapons loaded and could only have one magazine clip with 20 rounds of ammunition. We lost 247 Marines, sailors, and soldiers on October 23, 1983 when the sentries couldn’t load and fire their weapons in time to stop the suicide bombers. This was because of your party’s control over the military. I challenge you to a debate any time and any place! Better yet, resign you shameless tick.
How can any one listen to his OWN words and not understand what he said…if your not educated, your stuck in Iraq…That is not a joke about Bush in any way…As a liar will do, if he tells the story enough, he thinks he can make it true..
I am disgusted
I am a seventeen year old young lady in high school. I keep a close eye and ear on my government’s actions, and with this recent speech by Mr. Kerry I would have to say that I am PROUD. I am proud to see a man stand, say something he means, and not try to back out when a few people don’t like it. I saw many truths in his speech. In fact, my stepfather happens to be a very strong minded Republican and I have seen these traits in him. (Especially when it comes to being a fanatic Rush Limbaugh listener!) At times I am disgusted by actions of not only my stepfather, but also by our Republican representatives. I only hope that maybe Mr. Kerry’s speech can open the eyes of others to see what is happening to with government’s ethics and strategies. I also hope that it possible for us to get a grasp on our view of the war in Iraq and what we are truly there to do.
Sincerely,
Heather R. Simons
Mr. Kerry,
Your WORDS, nothing else, and your back peddling, speak for themself. You are a fool, on a huge scale, but what’s worse, you are destructive, always have been. You said it, and now you look worse for your filmsy excuses. Really, you are becoming the person one loves to hate.
Senator Kerry,
Not only is your “attempt at humor” unbelievably insulting to our troops in Iraq, but your attempt to call it a “botched joke” is an insult to EVERYBODY!
It’s one thing to put your foot in your mouth and say something embarrassing - I know, I do it far to often myself, and that is part of the reason that I don’t try to be a representative in my government. But it is insulting to think that we, the American people, are stupid enough to believe that you didn’t mean to say that students need to study so they don’t end up with no other choice than the military!
You are doing yourself more harm by continuing to make excuses.
You sir do owe the troops an apology for your comments! Of course it’s your better than thou attitude which makes you not apologize to them.
To insinuate that our troops or anyone who joins the military is not smart is very stupid of you. Our troops are very intelligent, highly educated, highly dedicated young men and women who offer their lives in sacrifice for our freedom. Even the freedom for you to make such disparaging suggestions about them!
If you don’t like our great president’s policies, work with your fellow Democrats to change those policies; don’t make such comments about our fine military force! Of course, this does tend to follow your past tradition of putting down those who will defend our nation!
Unless you apologize to our troops, you are a loser!
Senator Kerry,
I hope that you will take to EVERY single outlet you can with the context of your comments (including Fox News!). I also hope that members of the Democratic Party have the courage to stand with you and fight back at the twisting of these comments into campaign fodder. Isn’t it sad that this is what Republicans want to talk about…. and even sadder that many Democrats stand for it?
I understand that this was a botched joke. But even with the mistake, let’s look at the facts: the educated middle classes and those who rank above them on the economic scale are NOT those who are losing their lives in this war that was based on a lie. The working class and poor are losing people (and I speak as someone with working class roots whose father is a Vietnam Veteran)... This is not a commentary on intelligence, but rather on financial means.
So, in that regard, even the botched statement is true in a way: if you can (afford to) study, you won’t wind up in Iraq… If you can (afford to study/go to college), you’re less likely to be recruited in the first place. Does it mean no educated people serve? Of course not! But look at the averages… and consider who is suffering. By and large, it’s not the Ivy Leaguers.
Of course I understand that this is not what you said… but wouldn’t it be nice if people actually considered truths instead of twisting reality.
Please stand your ground and be heard no matter what. That is the sort of leader America needs.
Stephanie in California
Why don’t you Swift Boat Veterans for “Truth” types go back to whatever cave you crawled out from… or at the very least, not insult our intelligence with your blatantly obvious attacks? At least give us some sport in trying to figure out where you’re coming from, whether you are sent out from Free Republic, RedState, the SBVT pit of hell, or your parents’ basement. It’s too obvious right now.
Treason?
Inflicting his own wounds? (Yes, I did get your joke, but—to turn your own line of reasoning against you—you made a joke about a wounded military man. Tasteless.)
Wishing that the Democrats would lose this year?
All of you claiming that YOUR child/spouse/whoever was personally insulted?
ADMITTING you are Republicans?
This is just boring. Please, please, for the sake of the Internet, get better at playing the troll game.
Oh—and KERRY ON.
That press conference he gave was one of the best things I’ve heard all year. THAT is a fighting Democrat, who won’t take any crap from Rove’s right-wing smear machine.
The sound you hear is the air coming out of the senator’s prsidential aspirations in 08. Forget about Fox News, even Gen. Wes Clark (another veteran by the way) is jumping on Kerry.
Re: your “joke.”
You are not helping. We don’t need this kind of blunder at this critical time.
RESIGN NOW
I too am a veteran, and you guys need to get over yourselves. John Kerry is trying to fight for us, and your attacking him for defending us from Bush.
Nuff Said - He sinks his own ship each time he speaks… now he is double talking and turing HIS own words around. He KNOWS what he said, and he meant it!!
“Then he said: “You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.”
And Eileen your suggested word(s) don’t even fit into the sentence: “he meant BUSH was “stuck” in Iraq”. Please, really!
Mr. Kerry. I am the mother of two well educated young men who joined after September 11th because you just can’t let these things happen to our Freedom and that of the World. We are proud of our young people who serve.
I am so very angry and sad for you. Don’t do this to our young people!
Your service is O-V-E-R. Retire.
How juvenile and nauseating, not to mention the pot calling the kettle black. The President misspeaks on a regular basis, has played the wrong national anthem, and joked while “looking around for the missing weapons of mass destruction” at a dinner, just to mention a few insults and embarrassments to us all. Senator Kerry would have a very long way to go before over-taking the current President of this great nation in the blunder department.
WAY TO GO KERRY!
Nice to see so many of the 59m idiots are still around and can sort of type / comment on a blog, too.
Let us hope they will soon move to Iraq once they have freed it from tyranny and democratized it, the the REAL AMERICANS can continue to live in this country.
To all of you negative whining Republican wannabees who can’t seem to understand the English language unless somebody spells it out in “My Pet Goat” level readers…
Why don’t you wise ass nut jobs take your little pissant right wing diatribes some where that finds your kind of smary below the belt kind of tactics acceptable.
Rove, Melman and O’neil are calling on line one they have your latest talking points.
Well the good news is that you lying scumbags are about to get your come uppance. Payback is just around the corner and it’s gonna be a bitch.
I was so proud of John Kerry today! He gives voice to the anger that I and so many others around the world feel in regards to how our president and his cronies have utterly destroyed America’s reputation and moral authority in the world.
Those who call Mr. Kerry a liar—prove it or stop your childish name calling. Those who say they are ashamed of him, you have an odd value system that causes you to feel ashamed of a faithful, astute public servant who has more integrity than most other politicians combined.
Mr. Kerry’s commitment to truth, dedication to serving America, and willingness to stand for his beliefs no matter what, as well as his true compassion for the oppressed and his commitment to social justice—these are the qualities that have made me a supporter of him.
These are the qualities that made me realize that I had been, up to that point (2003), supporting a party that neither reflected my own values nor displayed anything I could admire or respect. All my life, Democrats had been vilified, much as some Republicans on this thread are trying to do today. But when I looked beyond the noisy propaganda, what I found were true heroes. In Mr. Kerry, I found a politician I could respect and admire.
He’s why I became a Democrat, and I am proud of that and proud of him. I live in a red state and don’t have the honor of being his constituent, but John Kerry speaks for me.
Thank you, Mr. Kerry.
John Kerry, You should apologize to every service member that has served in the last 4 years. I did not join because i failed in school. I left college and joined the service after 9/11 to serve my country and President.
Senator,
I think most intelligent people recognize that you simply botched a joke. Lord knows, our president is the ultimate butcher of the English language.
As a lifelong Democrat who desperately wants new leadership, I ask for one thing… please shut up. Just go away until after the election. We have what will probably be the best chance of taking back the house that we will have in a generation. You have given the other side ammunition, and made yourself a motivator to get the other side to the polls.
From a US vetern, you have once again foot your foot in your mouth! You should be ashamed of your comments
I do not for a minute think that John Kerry disparaged our military. I find him thoughtful and intelligent and one of the few who is truly concerned for the people who were sent to fight this war. The fact that he is finally articulating what so many of us feel is encouraging. ‘Support our Troops’ seems to mean support for a failed policy. It breaks my heart to hear of the death and injury of so many of our citizens with no coherent plan to end this mess. I support the military men and women who are in Iraq enough to vote for people who don’t think honoring deaths means more of the same.
Try this on for size Senator:
My son is an A student at a university considered to be “highly competitive.” He is also a cadet in the US Air Force ROTC.
His goal is to work hard, study hard and succeed in his university endeavors so that when he graduates he CAN go to Iraq, or wherever he is needed to DEFEND WITH HIS LIFE *your* right to be an imbecile and say stupid stuff over and over.
Thank God you’re not President. And thanks to all who serve, notwithstanding dimbulb politicians like yourself.
Rusty
Need any more bandaids?
As a life long democrat would you please just go away? you ran a terrible campaign two years ago and now you have given the GOP a great opportunity to latch on to something stupid you said just a week before the election.
Maybe you should have said, “if you’re an idiot, you can always get elected to the U.S. Senate”
PLEASE GIVE ALL OF US DEMOCRATS A BREAK AND JUST GO AWAY!
My daughter scored a 33 on her ACT. She is currently enrolled in a University. Prior to enrolling in college, she attented a private school for her secondary education. She will be leaving for Marine boot camp in January. My daughter is neither stupid nor ignorant and I take great offense at your comments. You saying this was a joke is just like the protestors who say they support our troops. Ha! What a joke! Shame on Them? No Mr. Kerry. SHAME ON YOU!!!
I am the mother of two United States Marines—by the way—both college educated, Mr. Kerry, and I am outraged at your thoughtless remarks. My sons are fighting for the freedom that you and your socialite wife enjoy every day. Your remarks are typical of big-mouth liberals who are all talk and no action. You disgust me.
The Republicans show how desperate they are for attacking John Kerry for mispeaking on his statement.
Look how long it took for them to address FOLEY?
This is the same WH that takes advise from Henry Kissinger that tought of the troops as less than human!
Why is the WH NOt sorry for sending “Our Troops” to die to aquire wealth for Bush & Cheneys buddies?.
John, John, John, this should wrap it up for your career?
Can you sell Heinz?
right- wing trolls.now thats funny=). tho name calling does hold true to form for you.
Senator Kerry spoke the long overdue truth-
And he spoke with a passion and assertivness that I only wish he’d used against the “swift-boat” fools years ago.-
Lori Piestewa lost her life- because serving in the military was her best option for providing for her children- It’s about time the truth as ugly as it may be, was spoken and acknowledged by America-
Thank you Senator Kerry for taking a stand, and pulling back the curtain on the false ‘wizzards’ controlling this nation-
Those who use our sons and daughters like plastic pawns- faceless numbers, little more than names on a page- and Not the flesh and blood loved ones, who can no longer wipe the tears from the cheeks of those who mourn the emptyness left behind by their needless deaths-
Kerry,
Your criticisms of the president are not things he is guilty of, but things that you yourself are guilty of.
“I’m not going to stand for it”.
Sandy and Grant Taylor
Hooray - ‘bout time you showed your cojones Senator! Dean was right after all - you have to stand up to these organized cretins who listen to Limbaugh, Hannity, and Savage all day. These far-right Republicans are not above disgracing every soldier in and out of uniform to score political points, and they demonstrate it every day. It’s all part of Rove’s plan of dividing the country and mucking his way to 51 percent. We’ve got’em on the ropes for once - don’t let up!
I am utterly speechless. When I heard your comments, Mr. Senator, my heart was deeply saddened. How have you let it come to this? You have spit in the faces of my grandfather, father, and brother who have served our country in the past and present. And you apologize “to know one”??? The audacity of you to stand in front of the American flag and claim to have our country’s best interest at heart. You, Mr. Kerry, I will NOT vote for. GOD BLESS AMERICA!
What is this crap, did the RNC send out a mass email calling on its 101st Keyboardist Brigade to all claim that their children were personally insulted?
Thanks JK—Just what we needed before the mid terms. You are brilliant ! Notttttt !!
I support the military men and women who are in Iraq enough to vote for people who don’t think honoring deaths means more of the same.
I think that statement says it best.
Senator Kerry is a true patriot.
Senator Kerry,
It is your words, not a failed attempt at humor, that judge you. You insulted every US veteran and active serviceman and woman by implying that students should study and work hard or they will end up only able to serve in the our military. You furthered that insult by your refusal to simply say that you were sorry for your words.
While it is legitimate to hold a different view of our being in Iraq it is not legitimate to hold those who serve in the military in contempt. It is also not a valid form of arguement to criticize those who have not served in the military because they criticize you. In fact it rather bolsters their criticism because of attacking their argument you only criticize the one putting forth the argument.
I urgue you to reconsider your words and give our finest men and women a sincere apology for your words.
Reed
Senator Kerry: Isn’t it time you got over not being president??? I am so sick of hearing the arrogant, elitist, self-aggrandized comments by you. My gosh either GO AWAY or try to work toward unity between the parties in the US, the 60’s are over!
Mr. Senator learn something from Barak at the very least!
Unbelievable, you should resign. Our troops are dedicated, smart, and our nations best. You are out of touch with reality. Our military loves our country and will do anything for it.
Senator Kerry, stand fast. Most of these “responders” are RNC hacks instructed to clutter your blog with the distortions dictated to them by their “leader”. You are a true leader. Don’t back down, tell it like it is! Give ‘em Hell John!!!
Wow ! What a screw up. Everyone gets exactly what he meant. What the hell was he thinking? Can you say “Foot in Mouth” ? Unbelieveable
HA,HA,HA,HA,HA,HA,HA,HA,HA,HA,HA,HA,HA,
If Kerry had spoken like this during his campaign, he would be President Kerry; unfortunately he’s way too much a “gentleman”.
Republicans STILL lie through their teeth about John Kerry.
The treasonous cowardly traitor to the US Constitution is the man now occupying the White House.
If there are ever real investigations of this administration dozens of Bush’s people will be indicted, and convicted.
Bush and Cheney are politically and morally corrupt crooks and liars…and will be remembered as such, along with the likes of Bin Laden, by history as long as there is a human history.
Hundreds of thousands of innocents are dead because of Bush/Cheney’s actions: May the Good Lord have mercy on their “souls”.
The only adjectives I can state that come to mind when trying to identify Kerry are useless and “gutless,” a genuine coward.
A person use to running!
Mr. Kerry,
You are an arrogant SOB who has a disdain for the United States Military (by your actions after you came back from Vietnam and again now). Your comments about education level are a) not true and b) could not be construed to be any sort of “joke” aimed at President Bush. You didn’t even mention the president or the Iraq policy in that section of your comments…
I know that our military (and the American public) are both smart enough to discern your real meaning which is why I am not worried about losing the House or Senate. Democrats will hamstring our military and create another Vietnam and Americans will not do that a week from today.
Obviously Kerry has not only made a bad joke, but his response shows a huge inconsistency. Let me quote form his press confrence.
KERRY: Very simple: that those who didn’t study it properly, those who made the decisions, they got us into Iraq. Very simple.
The accusation is that Bush did not study enough so he led us into the war. Well my recollection is that Kerry voted along with the rest of the Senate FOR MILITARY ACTION! So who is worse, the person who “did not study enough” and led us into the war or the person who apparently also did not study enough and followed this leader?
I fully support Senator Kerry’s right to free speech. For years now there has been anger and antagonism toward the expression of any sort of opposition to the government’s decisions and policies. If you agree with the war in Iraq, you are free to say so because of what servicemen and women have sacrificed for the American peopel to enjoy that freedom. Is that right only to be exercised when people speak in support of the Administration? It is a dark day for the American ethic when any person who dares speak out publicly against policy is deemed a traitor to the country, and a disgrace to the uniform, when the ideas of free speech and expression are what our uniformed officers have fought and died for. I, for one, will not applaud the president for sending our men and women to this war and then not having the money, plan, or support to give them the protection they deserve for their courage in fighting for our country. Our troops deserve better than what this president has given them. I can say that and much worse if I so choose, because my country supports that right. The same for Senator Kerry and the same for everyone on this page that disagrees with Senator Kerry. We trek into dangerous ground when we are so afraid of differing opinions that we must shout them down before they can be heard.
0. Don’t back down ... I would not expect anything less from a party the supports hit men that mock Michael Fox as he attempts to find cures for parkinsons ... But you guys want a fight you got it.
1. I have had it with you self righteous, draft dodging ,flip flopping liars. You guys want to dish it out… be prepared to take it
2. Support your statements with recruitment facts.
- Recruiters have been quite busy in
parking lots and low income schools these days
3. Ask the admin to provide stats on how many college graduates from non-military universities serve in Iraq
4. How many of the nearly 3000 members who have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan were college graduates
5. How many have left behind families to fend for themselves
6. And to John McCain: where were you my friend during those times when your hit men just out and out lied about my military record… no where john ... no where to be found ...
7. And to Tony Snow: how many years did you serve in the military, let me know when you are ready to talk about the military life, I’d like to discuss with you about how our soldiers are not paid enough for the sacrifices that they make for this administration stupidity ... and I would like to see you deliver those facts for the Fox press podium.
8. And to George: George you screwed up plain and simple ... just tell the truth ... when all the lies are played out ... just tell the American people the truth ... but most of all tell the brave men and women who are sacrificing their lives every day the truth… I wish you would spend a lot more time focusing on the strategy or tactics these days than running from state to state campaigning.
what a slap in the face to the men and women still risking their lives daily that you can once more shoot off your ugly and traitorous mouth.
I’d rather have a man of intent and determination leading us than a coward in the senate blabbing sensationalisms.
crawl back under your rock already.
proud career & OIF Vet Army Wife
I am insensed at the lack of sensitivity on the behalf of this Senator. It is one thing to disagree with the policies of the current administration, it is another to make light of the troops serving this country as ordered without political conviction. Mr. Kerry’s comments are a direct slap in the face of all that serve, their families and the people they protect. I serve with some of the greatest and SMARTEST Americans around.
Frankly, anyone can be a Senator. It doesn’t take much education…just a lot of money. Shame on you Mr. Kerry. I am so thankful that such a bitter man as yourself wasn’t elected to the most important position in the free world and moreover as the Commander-in-Chief.

It is of continuous amazement how low you politicians stoop for the sake of selfish political party gain. If you have something to say to the White House then point your comments directly to the White House - do not hide behind backhanded playground insults (especially when the group you are truly insulting are truly selfless patriots of this country).
You should feel very ashamed as person, let alone a US Senator.
Dear Senator Kerry, thank you for finally responding the right way. I wish you had done this in 2004. Imagine how many Americans and Iraqis would still be alive.
As a veteran of the armed services and now a military wife, I am alarmed and disgusted to hear what you, John Kerry, has said about the people that risk their lives to keep this nation safe. When I say this nation, I mean my family, my friends, YOUR family and friends, and disgracefuls like you. No matter what you say about it being a slip up, YOU OWE A PUBLIC APOLOGY TO ALL THE TROOPS!!!
My little brother was able to navigate the country’s educational system just fine and still ended up “stuck in Iraq.” Not everyone in the military is there because the man is keeping them down. On the other hand, if you’re too dumb to get into community college maybe the military can force some skills down your throat. It never ceases to amaze me the way politicians oversimplify issue so they can use them as scare tactics.
Vote Libertarian!!!
You should have kept your mouth shut. You screwed us in 2004 already; now you may be costing us in 2006. What the hell were you thinking? Keep the focus on Bush. That was idiotic, and now you have made yourself a focus of attention. Great. This may cost us a couple of races.
SHUT your MOUTH. You had your chance and blew it because you cannot speak English like a human being. Just SHUT UP. And don’t even think of running for President ever again.
I spent 10 years in the US Marine Corps Infantry. Since then, I have realized that during that time, I was in the presence of greatness.
Those young men who were there to serve their country are the brightest, well educated, well read, well spoken people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting.
Then today, I hear that Kerry says that if you’re a military member serving in Iraq, it’s because you are too lazy or too stupid to have applied yourself to education.
This made me angry, very angry. John, who’s never had a real job in his life, never contributed anything of value has the nerve to imply that my fellow Marines serving in Iraq “stupid.”
It pains me to no end that the people of Massachusetts continue to vote for this opportunistic cad.
Unfortunately, the comment invitation says it all…“We reserve the right to edit or remove comments.”
Well, I’ll give you one to remove: John Kerry is a traitor whose words before the senate 30 years ago likely caused the death of American servicemen held captive by a hostile enemy with whom we were at war.
In the interim, John Kerry has been a kept man, living off the fortunes of other men like a common gigolo.
Today, John Kerry’s eagerness to destroy America has taken his depravity to a new low. He made it obvious that military members are mere “serfs” in his view. It is obvious that destroying George Bush (another liberal), and regaining control of the government is worth the lives of a few thousand soldiers, more or less.
May you get what is coming to you John.
JUST SHUT UP BEFORE YOU HURT OR ALREADY HURT THE PARTY IT IS NOT ABOUT YOU. I VOTED FOR YOU BUT WON’T DO IT AGAIN. SHUT YOUR BIG MOUTH
John,
As the age old saying goes, “It’s better to be silent and thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.” Open your eyes, shut your mouth and get a clue of what you’ve done to the Dems on the eve of an election…......
Can none of these people read? I thas been made very clear, despite all the noise created by the right wingers, that this was directed towards George Bush, not the troops.
There’s so many people willing to discuss this misinformation being spread about Kerry. Why are they so unwilling to discuss Kerry’s actual positions?
I am amazed how many people seem to “Know” how many current military men and women have or do not have college educations.
I most certainly do not but statistically, the number of people in the united states who are eligible to attend an Ivy League school is miniscule and therefore, percentage wise, would make up a misicule number of military people.
Secondly, going on my experience, I personally know of four friends and family members that are in the military in Iraq and all four are either college graduates or on college deferment until they finish their term in Iraq.
I don’t see much point in going round and round with this particular thrash. The people that were told to come here and vent their spleens without letting themselves be troubled by minor little details like facts, and logic, and effective use of grammar and punctuation, etc. will continue to think and believe whatever it is that they want to think and believe.
One rather interesting point of fact, though, is irrelevant to anything that Senator Kerry did say yesterday but can still be applied to what he is incorrectly accused of saying:
The overall level of intelligence and education of our volunteer military has been on the decline for several years now, and the professional officers’ class and the civilian directors of our armed forces have not only acknowledged this but have actually encouraged it.
As casualties have mounted, troop burnout has skyrocketed, and recruitment levels have dropped precipitously, the military services have repeatedly lowered their entrance requirements.
Five years ago you couldn’t serve in our country’s armed forces without meeting certain standards of education and intelligence and mental fitness for duty. Today those standards have been relaxed so many times that they are practically meaningless.
John Kerry certainly does not believe that only stupid and/or uneducated people end up in the armed forces. That’s a canard argument, and it smacks of a desperate right-wing attempt to turn back the tides of history that are sweeping them off their own beaches.
But the people in charge of this country’s armed forces clearly do believe that stupid and/or uneducated people are perfectly well-suited to military service. Otherwise, they would be holding to their previous standards rather than abandoning them.
The people in the Pentagon and in the White House that are actively encouraging this systematic dumbing-down of our country’s volunteer military services are the ones who should be targeted for all of this righteous spleen-venting, not Senator Kerry.
So why not try directing your disparaging remarks to them instead? Speak for yourselves, not for your handlers. Call your Congressmen (or Congresswomen), fax your Senators, send smoke signals to your state legislators, whatever it takes.
Tell them that you want *all* the brave men and women who serve in this country’s armed forces to have full access to adequate education, health care, pension, and death/disability benefits for themselves and their dependents.
Even as we are still at war abroad, the people in charge over in Washington have been systematically dismantling all those things, incrementally taking away entitlements for military members that had been in place for many years, and that is what is *really* offensive and insulting to the troops.
point your anger where it really belongs,
Otter
The righteous indignation by those who have been directed to this site by right wing blogs is stinking up the place. Phoney claims of outrage will not make up for a joke of a president who doesn’t care at all about soldiers and their families. I am tired of their ridiculous criticisms and am 100% behind John Kerry.
I would like to know how many of those so put off by JK’s statements even listen to the stupid, and idiotic utterances of a man who reads a children’s book while we are being attacked? I am fed up with their crap. One day America will burst into flames and it will be because they lit the match.
Mr Kerry,
I am ashamed to call myself a Democrat. Be a man, own up to the comment you made. You might have meant to say something different, but you didn’t! We have listened to the comments word for word so please don’t try to hide behind what you “thought” you said.
My husband with several college degrees is active duty military and sees that side of the world on a monthly basis. Maybe you should visit them more often and you would see the caliber of the men and women who make up our military.
Before you open your mouth again, maybe you should visit Dover AFB as the hearses leave here daily with the bodies of our great heroes !! Those who died for your Freedom of Speech!
You are a disgrace to our Country! Remember when you point the finger at someone else you always have four pointing back at you!!!!
I do not believe that you “botched a joke”. You have really messed up on this one - Mr. Kerry. My son at the Air Force Academy would disagree that he has messed up and only deserves to be sent to Iraq.
I am tired of you, already! I am tired of your bashing everything just to try to make you and your party look good while never considering how it makes our country look to the rest of the world. We are divided and we will fall by the hands of people like you!
Mr. Kerry,
If, perhaps, your remark made to the California students was not meant to deride our troops, then it was certainly a very stupid attempt to wheedle the students you were speaking to. That the words you used in this attempt to charm were definitely directed toward our troops is to your shame and you DO owe them an apology.
I hope this blunder does not reveal your true attitude toward those who are over there fighting, but anyone who knows anything about the english language understands that your statement points to the troops only. THEY are the ones who are in Iraq instead of in school “navigating the education system”. To say that you meant to target the current administration is just simply a lie from a man who does not have the guts to own up to what he so stupidly said.
Mr. Kerry, your lies are always so darn transparent. Why do you dig holes deeper and deeper? When will you learn? Just say the truth, apologize and go on.
Dear Senator Kerry,
No matter what you meant by your remarks, they are hurtful to soldiers who defend our country as you once did, and you do owe them an apology. You should also apologize to your fellow Democrats and to all citizens who wish to change the direction of our country. You have allowed yourself to become the issue and that is wrong. You can blame the White House all you want, but you gave them the opening. This is not about you!! It is about getting this story off of the News Channels and allowing the press to cover the election in a way that is favorable to Democratic Candidates who are running for office.
Don’t you Swift Boat people have anything better to do?
...
...
Oh, never mind, you don’t. Your “elders” have been obsessed with John Kerry since the 1970s, and now the new generation is inheriting the obsession. He is your purpose for existence.
If he’s truly so worthless, perhaps you should reevaluate your own purpose.
Senator,
I agree with the last poster, the RNC has just sent out an email for all of their staffers to fill up your blogs with hate mail. The party has needed a back bone for 40 years. Don’t back down now.
Senator Kerry,
When is the democratic representatives going to learn to speak like the republicans ... in effective soundbites that go directly to the heart of the matter.
What you should have said today was…. “Yes, I will say I am sorry as soon as the President says he is sorry for lieing to the American people and our soldiers.”
There has been no American president in our history that has directly lied the American public for the reason for invading another country ... and the deaths that have followed because of it ... and been allowed to get away with it. Nixon (covering up for burglarizing a hotel room) or Clinton (lieing about a sexual relationship) are ABSOLUTELY NOTHING compared to this ... and yet Bush is still allowed to keep posturizine about “patriotic” duties and everyone is afraid to do what needs to be done - impeachment proceedings. THAT is the TRUE disgrace.
Mr. Kerry,
Your comments, which do not in any way appear to me as or sound like a “botched joke”, are demeaning and an insult to every person in the military as well as the parents of those brave young men and women. Do you honestly believe that the Doctors and Nurses serving in Iraq were unable to navigate our educational system? You are an absolute disgrace as a representative to the great Senate of the United States. The founding fathers would have laughed you out of Washington. I hope that the voters in your state will do so soon.
—Proud father of three service members
About 3/4 of these responses are from Republican neocon robots who are just trying to pretend like they supported Kerry before, “but now he’s gone to far”.
The only way I’m gonna get mad at Kerry is if he buckles and apoligizes. These rightwing gung-ho nutjobs don’t deserve an apology from a decorated war hero.j
They are sooo stupid that they’ll vote against their own interests (heck yeah lets cut taxes for the filthy rich!!!
I’m an idiot!!!) just cuz they hate gay people. Which is strange cuz most of these dumb rubes are getting screwed you-know-where by that large Elephant.
Mr. Kerry,
It was not Tony Snow, President Bush, Rush Limbaugh or anyone else else who made the foolish remarks last evening. How you can attempt to dodge responsibility for it by blaming it on “right-wing hacks” is laughable. The American people can see right through you. Furthermore, your insulting comments have removed all doubt about your distain for the brave men and women who defend your freedom. You are a disgrace to the US Senate, and the least you can do is own up to the truth.
Even if Kerry meant his insult towards President Bush….it still shows how horribly immature this man really is! His response was even worse! He is acting like a school boy that hasn’t gotten his way! It is so embarrassing to think what other countries think of us. I’m pretty certain there are other countries that Mr. Kerry would probably be facing a death sentence about now for the disrespect he has shown our troops and their leader, President Bush. He insults President Bush….he insults the troops!
The worst thing to ever happen to this country - The election of George W. Bush and a Republican controlled congress.
It’s about time that someone from the Democratic party stepped up to the plate and let these Republican fools have it. Make them pay for all their lies and criminality.
Keep fighting John and don’t let these cretins get away with bamboozling the soldiers or the American citizens any longer.
I hope I never see another Bush hold any meaningful job in gov’t ever again.
Where was all this outrage when George said that when we look back on the events in Iraq will be seen as “just a comma” in the history books?
What an insult to every person that has served in the military?
Senator Kerry,
Do NOT apologize to anybody for your remarks.
This is a great opportunity to shine a spotlight on this INCOMPETENT White House.
Call a news conference with fellow Democrats to denounce White House strategy in Iraq. Then offer your strategy in Iraq.
Such a conference will surely get nationwide media attention in grand detail! Word for word.
Then no one will be able to say Democrats have no Iraq strategy.
And it’s about time that happened.
Right now YOU have the nation’s attention.
Thanks for keeping White House incompetence in Iraq front and center in this election. That is the issue here.
Keep on talking! Say it loud! Get after ‘em!
I am NOT an RNC staffer nor will I ever be one. I personally am one concerned citizen taking the oppotunity to express my outrage at such an insensitive joke in an attempt at boosting John Kerry’s image and destroying my President’s
The timing of the Kerry’s comments, along with the desperate straits the GOP has created a last ditch front for the Bushies and their attack dogs. AM radio is cackling this afternoon. Limbaugh, Medved, and I am sure Hannity will be at big time tonight. “Hang Kerry!” is the cry. Let’s get real here. This is the GOP’s last gasp at trying to distract undecided voters about what they are supposed to be focusing on. They have kicked Kerry before and they are giving it another try. “Why, if you turn the gov’t over to those evil Dems it will be the end of the world!”. Be afraid Americans, but not about the changes that will take place next week. Be afraid that the voter turnout isn’t big, that the computer voting machines will somehow bog down(again) and we are left with the same mess we have had to endure the past 6 years.
Anyone who really thinks Kerry is dissing the troops and disrespecting their service is a moron. How dare Tony Snow, Bush, Cheney, and/or Rummy slam Kerry. They didn’t serve, go to war and see the hell that goes along with combat. This is a classic Bush admin tactic. Pound anyone who dares to challenge their failed policies.
Wake up America. While the world is very concerned with US policy and the philosophy behind it, we can send a strong message that the people here have had it with the status quo. Balancing the federal gov’t with some Democratic control of the House and Senate would tell the world we are still paying attention.
john kerry wasnt talking about the troops and you all know it. it is people like yourselves who hang on every word that comes out of rush limbaughs mouth that have created the problem in iraq. you voted the current idiot-president into office. you owe the troops an apology.
I have never been more sickened by Kerry than this time around. He’s a disgusting American…he should be ashamed of himself.
Our Troops are the best and deserve better.
suz..
Senator,
I’m sure your comments are being blown out of proportion. Simply do something the President would or could never do. Make a statement of apology to the troops. Better yet, call a press conference to do the same. Short and sweet. You’re sorry if your words hurt or disrespected the soldiers. Then drop it. They’re using this. Do what the President would never do. Accept responsibility ... and say you’re sorry.
m.w.
Sen. Kerry has insulted ALL the men and women who are not only currently fighting the war on terror in Iraq, but the families of these brave Americans as well! While to him, this comment was a “joke” to many of us it was a direct slap in the face! As a registered voter, I can assure you these remarks will resonate when I visit the polls.
As for the quote “only an idiot would believe these remarks were aimed at our servicemen” I can assure you, I am no idiot! I am college educated, and proudly support my family members serving in Iraq right now!
With great disgust,
Kathleen Steinbaecher
Finally!
You made me proud, if two years too late.
I am glad that you are calling it like it is.
You are, at last, calling them shameful, failed, incompetent, deceitful, and liars. The only thing missing is that you did not use specific names and epithets. Call George Bush a coward, spoiled little brat, an ignorant, an incompetent. Call the Vicepresident also a coward, and a thief, and a war criminal.
If you would have done this two years ago, we would be calling you today, and proudly, our Commander in Chief.
But it is never too late if the deed is good.
We really need this guts now.
Thanks, even if late.

Want another try on that pesky old punctuation?
Another liberal snob.

Let ME be crystal clear Mr. Kerry. NO ONE BUT YOU OWES OUR SERVICE MEMBERS AN APOLOGY!! The President, OUR COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF didn’t say it, YOU DID!!! I guess you still can’t get over the election huh?
I didn’t find your remark funny AT ALL at a time we are AT WAR. Our troops need POSITIVE endorsement now, Not your STUPID attempts at trying to be funny! Are you aware that you MUST be at LEAST a High School Diploma Graduate to enlist in ANY branch of the military (NOT AS IT WAS WHEN YOU SERVED). I served 12 years in the U.S. Army and finished my term as a Recruiter and had the fortune of enlisting MANY fine AND educated individuals. Let me give you a little advice, “Make Sure Brain Is In Gear BEFORE engaging MOUTH”. If you can’t follow that SIMPLE rule, SHUT YOUR PIE-HOLE!!!
I WILL ACCEPT NOTHING SHORT OF A PUBLIC APOLIGY NOW!!!
I am shocked at all the absolute idiots that do not understand what a “BOTCHED JOKE” MEANS. Holy cow. I guess if they did, they would not have voted for Bush to begin with.
You go all the way with this Sen. Kerry. Those of us who understand the english language and simultaneously hold common sense are right there with you.
Maybe we should make English as a second language, a required course for Republicans.
Gees, I ALMOST feel sorry for them, but they are so mean… I just don’t.
YAY! Thank you so much, Senator Kerry!
Because of you and your comment, my party will remain as the majority party for at least two more years. I thought we Republicans were going to suffer enormous losses but you gave us a much-needed boost for us to stay in power.
Keep up the good work, Senator! With Democrats like you, the GOP doesn’t need friends.
Grammatical errors have been corrected
Where was all this outrage when George said that when we look back on the events in Iraq, the events will be seen as “just a comma” in the history books?
What an insult to every person that has served or died in the military?
I got a sense of redundancy reading through the messages. I think I can speak for both sides of the aisle when I say, “Please, please, please, Senator Kerry, keep on talking, keep it up, keep it up, keep it up. Our side needs you now like it never has before.”

Kathleen you and your friends posting here today should Read Conservatives without a Conscience by John Dean. You might learn something about yourselves….........Oh, I forgot, reading and understanding what you read is beyond you. If it comes out on books on tape, you might give it a try.
Kerry should just say very clearly he misspoke and he’s sorry for the way the comment came out, and that he realizes it sounded like a complete insult to our nation’s soldiers. But that he didn’t mean it like that. As for this “no apology to anyone” tactic, there’s a saying when you’re in a hole stop digging.
I agree with those who said this is an RNC type effort. Maybe not the RNC itself, but it’s definitely a “muster the troops” effort from some sort of right wing organization. It’s called ASTROTURF, as in FAKE grassroots.
It’s laughable.
Senator Kerry -
I totally buy that you botched a bad joke - but why in the world would you leave something like that in your remarks anyway? It would have sounded stupid even if you’d gotten it right and if you didn’t realize that - well, I seriously question your judgment.
Now, instead of exhibiting righteous indignation that your comments are being purposely misunderstood and used against you by the Republicans - turn it around and talk about the economic draft at work in this country which DOES account for the disparity of poor to rich, and high school to college educated in the service.

Do you NOT understand the meaning of a botched joke? Wow.
Maybe English as a second language should be mandatory for ALL Americans, not just Republicans.

So how does GW make you feel?
Rusty,
I know that you are following your leader and that it is tough to think on your own, but try to stay focused. The subject is not about attacking other people. It is about how ignorant, idiotic, and self-absorbed your “leader” has become. I am just trying to help out the intelligent people on the left if there is any left! I don’t think there will be any doubt why they are called the left because everyone seems to be departing from reality. (Rusty,

If you want to respond to this remember your focus…thanks!
Vote right and vote correct!
My two friends and I all served, and we are not offended by these remarks by Senator Kerry. It is obvious when the remarks are seen in context that it was another joke in a string of jokes about Bush. Bush and the modern Republican Party are what is offensive to us. We swore to defend the United States, and what we were made to defend, was the Republican Party’s political stranglehold.
Good words Senator Kerry!! They want to pick a fight with you because they do not have anything to run on but hateful campaigning. They push you - you push them right back. Your words today were pitch perfect.
keep fighting! ;)
I LOVE all the republicans (i was gonna call them trolls) who have posted here as “former democrats” or as patriots on this site to annoy people who might agree with Kerry or do not support this illegal and immoral war.
I would be most of those posts are from 2 or 3 people.
George W. Bush (who deserves NO respect from anyone) is a draft-dodging, coke-head idiot who sent troops to fight a war with—NOT ENOUGH EQUIPMENT, NOT ENOUGH MEN and worst of all—- predicated on a bunch of lies about WMDs.
His policies and inability to articulate a rational thought have made our government and our country the laughing stock of the world. There is no doubt that at some point we are going to have to run with our tail between our legs from Iraq—not because our troops are fighting the valiant fight—but because people, rather morons, like Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and that completely inept Sec’y of State, Princess Ferragamo have completely mismanaged the war and screwed it up.
How any person can support the lies, distortions and fear-mongering that is tossed at us from the Bush-Nazi regime is beyond my comprehension
Thank you Senator Kerry for finally standing up to the worst regime in US history.
Look people, To my Republician Americans….Take your head out of your BUTTS..The problem is not with what Senator Kerry said it’s with the way you choose to understand it….Bush can’t make a complete sentance without ah ah ah…..you know what I’am talking about…Who’s doing better this year—big business, Oil, people who put Bush where he is today….Not the working middle class, oh ya theres very little of us left…I expect to take some hits for this statement too so thats all part of being a true American….have at it , at least I’ll have your attention…maybe thats’ what it takes….I’am so tired of the RNC and other Bushies taking shots at Democrats, all Senator Kerry wants is for all of us to be united, all this administration seems to do is divide..Senator Kerry is and always has been a strong supporter of our troops, they know it and so do we…the way I look at this is Bush owes America and most of the world an apology..We know what Senator Kerry said we know what Senator Kerry ment, and the truth is so do the Republicans, they just need to spin everything to their advantage..let’s not let that happen..let’s stand firmly behind Senator John Kerry, let’s make sure he dosn’t get swift boated again let’s make sure we don’t get swift boated again either….LET’S HEAR SOME KERRY SUPPORT NOW!!!!!LET’S KEEP FIGHTING…..THANK YOU! BlueRose
Senator Kerry,
You stated “I’m not going to be lectured by a stuffed suit White House mouthpiece standing behind a podium.”
Well I am not - I am an ARMY veteran who recent your remarks. You do OWE ALL OF US an apology Senator. If you are half the man you claim to be, stand up and confess your own mistakes and stop blaming other for your short comings.
As I understand it you voted to support the war back in 2003, so if my education serves me right, you are just as liable as the other guy for the war in Iraq.
To the Bush lovers (37% brainwashed) whom have showed up here, don’t let the door hit you in the ass on your way out.
How pathetic !!!!
Signed,
Wife of a 20 year VETERAN.
If Kerry meant to say Bush why didn’t he say Bush? I can’t believe all of you people are defending what he said. I have voted for Democrats in almost every national election since 76 and this guy has loser written all over him. Even Democratic strategists are saying he should shut up. Good Grief! Is he surrounded by idiots? It reminds me of when he was standing at the convention and he gives that idiotic salute and talked about reporting for duty. CHECK OUT THE NEWS PEOPLE! the GOP are enjoying this to no end! Where is John Edwards?
Keep on coming John!
Senator Kerry, you are the true patriot that speaks truth to the nation. You are the one who warned our country about the “back-door” draft in 2004 when few knew what you were speaking about. You brought this up and pointed out how Americans were getting “stuck” in Iraq.
We live in very mean and politically dangerous times. You may owe America an apology about a gaffe in telling a joke, but your debt is tiny compared to the President and his Administration that lied to America about WMD’s. Who outed a CIA Agent, who suspended the Geneva Conventions, paid for phony news stories, suspended Habeas Corpus, wrote Signing Statements that are destroying our national system of Checks and Balances, suppressed information and scientists supporting global warming, packed our regulators with lobbyists from the industry they were regulating, failed us in Katrina, in Afghanistan, and yes, failed even to get Osama bin Laden at Tora Borah.
So should you resign or drop out of the race for President because you messed up your joke?
Give me a break! And give America the leadership this nation needs. Apologize for the few words if you must, but do not stop speaking truth to power! Do not stop defending our Constitution from those who would like to subvert our freedoms! Do not stop criticizing a war that is going nowhere, a war where young men and women continue to be sent to die.
We all have your back John!

John Kerry for President 2008
Posted by loud pundit | October 31, 2006 5:40 PM
absolutely.
Just too stupid to be President!
and let’s not forget about arrogant and repugnant.
John Kerry’s Senate record and Presidential aspirations are a much BIGGER joke than that distasteful comment about our troops.
If you doubt the GOP isn’t going full tilt on this deal check out Fox News. Bush screaming in GA, Coulter is on spewing as I speak! Bring in the reserves. They know they are fighting a losing battle.
Two words for Mr. Kerry:
Buh. Bye.
Just so I’m clear on this—you said: “...Bottom line, these Republicans want to debate straw men because they’re afraid to debate real men. “
And your definition of “real men” would be .... politicians such as yourself? With a laundry list of complaints but a virtually empty list of solutions? And really REALLY bad speech writers?
Yeah, Mr. Democrat liberal, you’re a real man alright, if you define real men as control freaks who don’t believe in personal responsibility, accountability, or the Greater Good.
America didn’t fall for it whan you ran for president, and they’re not falling for it now.
Buh.
Bye.
What the hell were you thinking? I’m ashamed of you. I’m ashamed you would humiliate yourself and the democratic party in such a vile way.
John Kerry, many Americans now a days question should we continue with the war in Iraq, but WE do not question the loyalty, bravery or dedication our out troupes. Did you forget that many of our troops serving in Iraq are graduates from the top Military Academies in our country? Do you question their academic achievement? And our enlisted men and women serving in Iraq, are you questioning there intelligence? Any apology from you at this point, I am afraid, will fall on death ears.
Senator, you still need to apologize.
I say this as a liberal Democrat who witnessed the Rick Kahn speech at the Wellstone memorial 4 years ago. His speech was also the opinion of one person carried away by his own hubris. Many people believe, as I do, that the speech cost Democrats Paul Wellstone’s seat as well as some others.
You sir, must decide between your party and the good of your country and your ambitions to be President.
Get over yourself and start by saying…
“Regarding my poor joke today, I am very sorry if I have offended anyone in the military or anyone who was in the military or anyone who has or had a loved one serving in the Armed Forces. That was not my intention and I sincerely apologize.”
Follow that with the President’s lousy record in Iraq and maybe things will be okay.
Mr. Kerry, Your comments have deeply saddened me. I am a daughter, granddaughter, great granddaughter, neice, and cousin of career military men. They are all well-educated and informed and chose this life despite other opportunities presented to them. Your speech was a slap in the face to them, their fellow servicemen and women, and their families. When did it become dishonorable to serve one’s country? When did it become acceptable for politicians to disparage the very people that they voted to send overseas? I am not a Bush lover or a great supporter of the war, but your words wounded me. I would have thought that someone who experienced the shameful reception that our Vietnam vets received upon coming home would be more sensitive in his choice of words.
Mr. Kerry I stand behind you 100%.
Thank you for standing up for what you know to be right!
It seems to me that despite everything that has gone on, these disillusioned people still don’t realize that their president is spitting lies in the faces of Americans.
And you Republicans and “Democrats-turned-Republicans” need to stop being hypocritical. It’s not fair to keep ATTACKING SENATOR KERRY’S WIFE AND THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY.
You, Mr. Kerry, are the one who owes the Republican party and the troops an apology. You are a disgrace to America and its people. You are just sore because you did not win the presidential election. And you feel safe saying these nasty comments because there is no way to know how you would have handled all that has happened because you are not in the position to do so. And there is a reason you were not given the chance to be the president of our country. That reason is because we, the majority of the people of America, did not vote for you. If you want to gain respect, your actions are the wrong way of going about it.
Making humorless jokes and poking fun at a very serious situation is immature and makes me thankful that you are not the leader of our country. Please, please do us a favor and accept your loss and step down from your Republican-bashing soapbox.
Mr. Kerry.
Shame on you! I have seen the video of your Monday speach. It matters little what the prepared speach, trotted out by your staff after the fact, may or may not have contained. Those college students heard you say that if they did not study hard, they would end up in Iraq.
The men and women of the Armed Forces are better educated and better prepared than the population demographic they came from. They will leave the service with even more education and will be better prepared citizens than those that did not serve. I know that from 27 years of service and two tours in a war zone.
It is time for you to humble yourself a bit and tell them you are sorry - even if it is because you could not even read the speach that was prepared for you.
This is either the same few people posting repeatedly with different names, or it’s a concerted blogspam effort.
It needs to be countered, though, whichever it is.
Kerry is right on target. If you can’t see that the comment
(1) was part of a list of Bush jokes,
(2) was definitely a jab at him for not “doing his homework” before going into Iraq,
(3) was possibly dark humor like “you can do everything wrong in life but still become president and royally screw up at least two countries,”
...then I have little choice but to pity you for blind robotic partisanship.
No wonder Kerry was so angry in his press conference. It’s bound to get to you to listen to this sort of craven, deliberate bullcrap nonstop. He’d had it with it.
After the conference, you guys are losing this in the media, so you take it to the official johnkerry.com blog? This is why the Republicans are going to lose next week.
Thanks John:

Are you a Republican ? or do you just enjoy making it easy for them?
1 week to go MORON, take a vacation far away where there no microphones or reporters.
You have a way of fixing things beyond repair !

Dear Senator Kerry,
I made my post above before I read all that has been said about you. Some is on target and some of it is just trash, but the bottom line, as I stated above, is that you must apologize, not to the President, not to Republicans, but to the troups. Books have been written about armies fighting the previous war when they should be fighting the present one. Now is not the time for you to gird your loins for the battle you should have fought in 2004. It is not your fight this time. I accept that you misspoke, but none-the-less, what you said was hurtful to those to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude. The President may be compounding the damage for political benefit, but now is not the time to take him on. Let me repeat, this it is not your fight. You should not be the focus of attention. Let it go. Please let it go in the only way you can: Apologize!
Sincerely yours,
Jay
Twist it any way you want, say it was a botched joke, but think before you speak. Being a 17 year member of the military I can tell you I took it as an insult. You have alot to say when you are stumping but when caught you say the same old thing. BUSH LIED!!!!! BUSH’S FAULT!!! That line is growing old.
John Kerry should say, “I will apologize for screwing up a joke meant for the President, IF the President will apologize for screwing up the war in Iraq and making our troops pay the price for the President’s mistakes.
Mr Kerry,
I have a son who is a West Point Graduate, Captain serving in Iraq. Your remarks concerning a soldiers education were deplorable. I heard what you said and you attempt to say: “My statement yesterday—and the White House knows this full well—was a botched joke about the president and the president’s people, not about the troops.” is a sad attempt to under estimate the intelligence of the American People. You should be ashamed of yourself. I am an African American (Former Democrat) who will do all with in my power to ensure your party NEVER gets control of Congress or the White House again.
John Kerry owes no one an apology because he is absolutely correct. The troops on the front lines in Iraq and Afghanistan are those most likely the least important to this administration. It is the same in every war. Those with the least education are most likely to go to the front lines and be killed first, they tend to be throw aways while those with connections stand in the background giving the orders. But all of them are brave and respected back home by all of us,including by John Kerry.John McCain made an erroneous statement when he said ...“those who chhose to defend our country….None of these men and women “chose” to serve in Iraq, they were ORDERED to serve there. And at risk of court marshall if they refuse to do so.Bush’s chance and that of his party have come and gone in regards to leading this country out of it’s current mess.Next week let us all think clearly and above party loyalties and vote with the knowledge we now have to set things right in Iraq,Afghanistan, the national budget, war crimes committed by this moronic group of so called leaders of the free world’s most powerful country.Vote intelligently!
This whole thing is pointless.
Everyone, Republican or Democrat, knows what Kerry meant.
The Republicans will just spin it to impress/pump up the conservative base that is willing to believe it, regardless of what he said to begin with.
People who can’t think for themselves should not be allowed to vote. Am I serious? Well, obviously everyone has the right to vote, so on that front, I’m venting anger here. However, abusing your right to vote is the worst thing any American can do.
Kerry has done more for Democrats than any other figure in Washington, and this is not about to spoil it. You’ve done great, John. This means nothing.
Thanks again, man.
TD:
Statement of Max Cleland on John Kerry’s Response to GOP Attacks
“I think people will remember John Kerry’s press conference today as the moment we Democrats stopped once and forever accepting the disgraceful smears of Republicans. John Kerry showed our Party how to fight back with the truth.
“John Kerry is a patriot who has fought tooth and nail for veterans ever since he came home from Vietnam. He has stood with his brothers in arms unlike this Administration which exploits our troops to make a political point and divide America.
“John Kerry should apologize to no one for his criticism of the President and his broken policy in Iraq. George Bush is the one who owes our troops an apology. This is text book Republican campaign tactics.
“Everybody knows it’s not working this time around. If anyone thinks a veteran would criticize the more than 140,000 heroes serving in Iraq and not the president who got us stuck there, they’ve got a partisan political agenda and that’s the bottom line. We’re not going to take it any more.”
Even if you, John Kerry, were making a joke about the President, the U.S. President who was elected by a majority, you still are wrong. That was disgusting and tasteless. Remember, John, he is the commander of the armed forces and to make him the butt of your joke makes all military the butt of your joke. Your “Band of Brothers” assertions during the last campaign should have reminded you that whether you disgaree with one, or more including your commanders, you are still a “Band of Brothers” and your survival may very well be at the hands of one of these brothers.
You have officially passed Howard Dean as the most disgusting of politicians.
Do something constructive and assist the country in defending itself against its enemies rather than continuing, as you did 35 or so years ago, to give them hope that when more “nut-jobs” like you act as you do they will defeat the same great nation that allows you to say such idiotic stuff.
And, no, there has been no evidence to date found of voter fraud in Ohio.
And, yes, the President did have a higher GPA than you.
I am a democrat I am planning on voting democrat in the upcoming election. I can’t speak for anyone else here but I can say that as I read the plain meaning of what John Kerry said there was a reasonable interpretation that he was insulting our troops. He should recognize that an say he is sorry.
I live in New Jersey and I applauded our recent supreme court ruling, with regards to gay marriage, I was proud to be from my state that day. If I was born in Mass. I’m not sure I could say the same about this day given the senator who would be representing me. If he just misspoke then frankly he should have said he was sorry about that instead of compounding it with this whole “turn it on bush deal” and refusing to apologize to anyone.
Yes bush is an idiot, and yes he did get us stuck in a war in Iraq when we should have used sanctions to hold them over till we took care of Binladen and Afghanistan but that doesnt mean that what Kerry said was any less wrong.
Wow! Mr. Kerry tell us what you really think, fortunately our service members are not “Thin Skinned” and will still continue to protect even you. I am amazed that you still have a following and these people are even defending you and your position. You are truley a disgrace to your profession and our country!!!

loud pundit and BlueRose:
I’ve not seen a defense yet, that makes logical sense and can be backed up by either history, or actions. BlueRose, you complain about who’s making money. I ask you to consider something, could at be that there is such a majority, that supports this war on terror, that we will pay whatever it costs for gas, because we support the war? Ponder this for a moment, It is not just Big Oil and Big Buisness thats raking in the cash, it is AMERICAN OWNED Oil Companies and buisnesses that have the obscenely large profits. I point you towards Occam’s Razor…This simplist solution is most oftem correct. It’s not Bush and a vast and complex right wing conspiracy that is to blame for everything…It is the PEOPLE! The silent masses! Well mostly silent, but we will not tolerate these things any longer. You’ve kicked the same sleeping tiger that the radical Islamists kicked. Do you know how to deal with it’s teeth?
I am active duty Air Force. Everyday, I am awed by the intellegent, college educated people that I work with (all ranks, enlisted and officer). I find it hard to believe that with so many intellegent people in our country with experience in the military, budgeting, and life in general that we can’t find decent candidates to run for office. I don’t care if someone is democrate or republican, I just want people in office with a decent head on their shoulders with the best interests for our country’s people and future. Why does that seem too much to ask? Whichever groups are supporting Kerry need to find a new puppet.
John Kerry volunteered to serve in Vietnam. Bush had pappy get him into the Guard and then he went AWOL to avoid a physical (probably because he was using cocaine at the time). Let’s ask who really supports the troops.
Kerry actually fought in a war. He has had bullets fired at him. He’s not going to attack our military, but his mis-speak (which was intended a a barb at Bush) is being spread around like so much manure. I wonder why that is? Could it be because the Republicans have nothing else to run with?
Let’s talk about the times Bush mis-spoke. Let’s talk about the times he’s touted patriotism but led our brave men and women to slaughter because his Republican Congress refused to provide them with adequate supplies. For God’s sake, Halliburton gave our troops bad water and food. They are over there dying for us and these Chickenhawk Republicans can’t even give them decent food and drink or protective armor.
Anyone who is here blasting Kerry needs to do a little homework.
1. Check the Senate record for the past couple of years and see who’s actually done something for our service men and women. Kerry has walked the walk in supporting our troops by actually DOING something to help them in Congress. He’s also walked the walk by campaigning for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans running for Congress.
2. See the Robert Greenwald film “Iraq for Sale” and learn who is NOT supporting our troops. http://iraqforsale.org/
Then you will have some clue what this debate is all about.
Senator Kerry’s comments were in poor judgement, yet in no way and insult to our troops or their families. When I heard it I immediately chuckled and knew it refered to the President and his Admin. I have friends in Iraq and another to be shipped off after Christmas. John Kerry was correct, the apology is owed by the President and Republicans who have our troops stuck in Iraq. My sympathies go out familes and troops offended by his comments and I hope I have not futher an insult, but please read the prior context, and don’t buy into the Republican noise machine. Oddly, you see it online or MSNBC, you hear it chuckles and laughs, on FOX, nothing. Take Care all!
A botched joke? You have to admit that it is pretty funny when Senator Kerry gets himself pumped up into that haughty, “do you know who I am”, “how dare you question me” mode - a little reminiscient of Louis XVI of old France.
Here’s the apology Senator Kerry should give:
“I am so sorry.
I’m sorry that the president didn’t have the sense to realize that I was talking about him yesterday.
I’m sorry he took a criticism of him and turn it into an insult against our brave men and women in combat.
I’m sorry that in this political season, the president and his operatives are willing to spread a clear false story—a story that hurts our troops and dishonors their service—just to score some political points.
I’m sorry he and most of his key operatives never served this country in combat.
If they had, maybe they wouldn’t be so reckless with the hearts and minds of those in our military.
Can you imagine what the state of this country would be in if “Foot in Mouth” Kerry had been elected President two years ago?!?
Mike G, why don’t you go back to Free Republic where you came from?
Pathetic.
What John Kerry SAID was disgusting?
All he meant was that we need change, and the only way to get change and avoid a possible future re-run of the present, is to not allow our young heroes to be used by the system like they’re being used in Iraq right now.
Kerry was NOT SAYING ANYTHING AGAINST THE TROOPS!!!! His comment was targeted at the Bush administration and our current leaders, who USED our young heroes and LIED to them, having now a record amount of deaths as a result of executing a pointless war.
John Kerry is not the man any of you should be angry with. Try spewing your hate at our current powers that be. They’re the very reason any of us are having this discussion right now.
Bush and Co. are leading this country down the wrong path. Kerry could have done a better job (with his eyes closed).
This mud-slinging is about as productive as banging your head against a brick wall, though and JK should know better because media giants and bloggers are always going to try to jump on him for anything that comes out the slightest bit wrong. Why they hell don’t people jump onto GWB for all of his dyslexic, botched, and downright inconsistent speeches. He’s an absolute embarrasment to this country and the ideals it was founded on.
Unfortunately, America is no longer the greatest country anymore and it is changing from an oligarchical democracy closer to totalitarism. Practically every nation HATES use now because of BUSH.
The next two years cannot come sooner? The next president (without question will be a Democrat) is going to have a huge mess to clean up.
Senator Kerry never insulted the troops…he was insulting the “crook and liar” in chief, “President” Bush…get it?!
Only a Rovian propaganda machine could distort things in this way…
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/31/AR2006103100829.html
From the Washington post….
While campaigning in California, Kerry told a college crowd on Monday: “You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.”
Kerry’s office released his prepared remarks, which said, “Do you know where you end up if you don’t study, if you aren’t smart, if you’re intellectually lazy? You end up getting us stuck in a war in Iraq. Just ask President Bush.
Obviously, Kerry had NO intention to say what the Bush spin machine says he was trying to say.
All you Bush Kool Aid drinkers who have bought the White House “spin” are dead wrong….and it is YOU who owe Senator Kerry an apology!!!
Shame on you and shame on Bush.
PS
You Bush lovers are a sad and pathetic lot of hypocrites; how many THOUSANDS of times has Bush flubbed his own lines and “said” things that everyone knows/knew he didn’t really mean. Cut the crap!
Kathy:
Why yes, I can.
A thousand American troops (or more) still alive.
A thousand American civilians (or more) in New Orleans still alive.
The American consumer feeling more confident about their job, for good reason.
The United States having apprehended terrorists, as the British did, without the use of torture.
Yes, I can imagine it quite clearly, thanks.
And one more thing, JFK (There is no comparison in the initials to the real JFK). It is politicians like you, Murtha, Edwards, Kennedy, Pelosi, Reid (I could go on for a wahile) that have pushed a once Bill Clinton voter (I am so sorry) turned to an Independant turned 100% conservative. And now the folks here in Missouri removed the straight ticket vote. More time from work to go vote. Of course, not many liberals understand “work”. They need hard working conservatives to earn and dole out to those that don’t.
I feel compelled to share the letter below sent to me by a cousin of mine.
She shared a letter from one of our family members deploying to IRAQ as a Navy Pilot.
( By The Way - One MUST be educated to be a Navy Pilot. )
My eldest son, John, returned from IRAQ last month. I am a Navy Veteran. We lost a Cousin from Texas in the early days of the War In Iraq.
( The ambush of the Army convoy in Najariya ).
We are proud Americans.
I hope this inspires those that take time to read it!
I pray that you will be inspired, enlightened and that it gives you a deeper appreciation for those willing to serve our country.
It makes me feel good and proud that many in our family have decided to serve our country in times of Peace and in times of War.
Some made the ultimate sacrifice, others did their part.

Dear Family:
Well,
The time is quickly approaching when I will be leaving for my first deployment. After ten years in the service I guess it’s about time!
“War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.”
—John Stewart Mill—
It is time for me to stand the watch, to relieve those who have been patrolling our borders and the borders of our enemies. It is time for me to put to use all those long hours of training, studying, and flying that have become such an intricate part of my life. Some people agree with the actions of our military and some people don’t. Make no mistake, it is for that very reason that makes this country so great and worth defending. I serve, not only for the Americans who salute me but for those Americans who would spit on me, burn our flag, challenge our government, or ridicule our President. I serve, to make sure that they have that right! Any nation will allow it’s citizens to openly agree with the government, this is one of the only nations in the world, in history, that has fought to give it’s people the right to disagree and disagree publicly. For what other reason do I serve? This nation hasn’t had to fight a war on it’s own soil for a hundred and fifty years, my job and the job of the United States Navy is to ensure that it never has to again. Whether the enemy is terrorism or a foreign power threatening peace, the United States military shields it’s citizens from harm or even from the inconvenience of dealing with the effects of both by taking the fight abroad. Many Americans may not always realize or appreciate why they get such a peaceful sleep at night. They sleep soundly without the threat or fear of car bombings, tanks rolling in the streets, or rockets raining from the skies. The soldiers and sailors of the our armed forces do know why and we are happy that the fight has been made on foreign soil and our fellow citizens back home can remain ignorant of the true state of the world, and the true proliferation of evil. How many days in this month alone have you gone the full 24 hours without thinking about the battles being waged in Iraq and Afganistan, or feel that 9/11 is a part of our history and not a part of our present. How many Americans stopped their busy schedules to appreciate the number eighty this month. That’s the number of soldiers who returned home in body bags this month alone. Our thanks come in the form of ignorance and forgetfulness. We know we are doing our job when Americans can go a day, a week, a month without thinking of the violence known throughout the rest of the world. For those Americans who wish to bring our men and women back home I offer this thought, the closer our forces our to our own soil the closer the battle lines will be as well and the less likely they will be able to ignore or forget the existence of evil. For these reasons I take my place on the fence as a sentry, to patrol those areas that our nation has deemed threats to our way of life. My loyalty is to my God, to my family and then to my country, but I go now to serve my country in any manner that I might be asked with the hope that in doing so, I may better serve the other two.
Chris
Kerry is a disgrace. Give us more credit. That was not a joke about Bush, that was you being a racist towards the US military.
Typical Kerry. If it wasn’t such and insult to our heros it wouldn’t warrant nothing more than a yawn. Maybe a few laughs. Oh John. You are such an IDIOT!!
Help me to understand your comments, Sir. You made mention that if you are not educated, you would end up in Iraq. Now, from what I saw nothing was even mentioned about the President and his policies, mistakes or whatever you’d like to call them. But, what was mentioned and what most certainly was taken as an implication, was that our Troops were not smart enough to stay out of Iraq. Not sure how this can be taken out of context and the fact that the very next day you start to blame to the President for what YOU said. How is this his problem? Am I happy that we are in Iraq right now…no. But what I would very much like to see once and for all is SOMEONE in the political world be a stand up person and attempt to work together and stop tearing down this Nation - remark by remark. Democrat or Republican!
Study hard in school so you don’t end up in Iraq?? Coming from a military family, with siblings who went to the United States Military Academy at West Point and other United States academies, I find your remarks absolutely disgusting and ignorant. Do you know how prestigious these academies are? Are you aware of their obligations AFTER they graduate (West Point is a minimum five year commitment)? My point is, there are many very inteligent people who only DREAM of fighting for their country and protecting America. It just boggles my mind that you can say such a idiotic statement. I can’t believe my brothers and friends are risking their lives everyday to protect complete morons like yourself. Have fun sucking at life :)
Mike G, you are a right-wing troll. Why exactly are you here? Do you just like taking a s*** all over someone else’s house?
Senator, comments as the one you have made today tend to divide this nation. This is a time for us to start coming together in a bipartisan way after one of the most bitter, divisive campaigns in history. Please do the right thing and apologize for your out-of-line comments because many troops, as I hope you see, are absolutely offended by your statement.
I was shocked to hear Senator John Kerry imply that young people with a good education and good grades do well, and those without end up in the the military - in Iraq.
John Kerry was wrong to say that. Military service is a respected and admirable profession in America. It’s not for people who can’t hack it in school.
Joining the military is a choice in America. It’s time we thank the people who make that choice, the people who put their lives on the line to protect and defend us.
Maybe John Kerry should look at the requirements for being an astronaut in the USA. On the NASA web site, it says: “At least 1,000 hours pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft.” Where do you think astronauts get that experience? MOSTLY in the military! Almost all astronauts who are “pilot/commander” astronauts come from the military.
The Apollo 11 astronauts had military backgrounds.
I’ll bet America’s astronauts never thought that they entered the military because their grades sucked.
Senator Kerry,
Thank you! Thank you! The freeper outrage is laughable! The disservice to our troops is the string of lies that led to this illegal war.
It’s incredible how wingnuts swarm! Maybe if I post these flubs (courtesy Hulsey13 at DU) from the worst president in history, they’ll flock to the WH website:
“People don’t need to worry about security. This deal wouldn’t go forward if we were concerned about the security for the United States of America.”—George W. Bush, on the deal to hand over U.S. port security to a company operated by the United Arab Emirates, Washington, D.C., Feb. 23, 2006
“See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda.”—George W. Bush, Greece, N.Y., May 24, 2005
“It’s in our country’s interests to find those who would do harm to us and get them out of harm’s way.”—George W. Bush, Washington, D.C., April 28, 2005
“You work three jobs? Uniquely American, isn’t it? I mean, that is fantastic that you’re doing that.”—George W. Bush, to a divorced mother of three, Omaha, Nebraska, Feb. 4, 2005
“Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.”—George W. Bush, Washington, D.C., Aug. 5, 2004
“We need an energy bill that encourages consumption.”—George W. Bush, Trenton, N.J., Sept. 23, 2002
“Well, as I say, we haven’t heard much from him. And I wouldn’t necessarily say he’s at the center of any command structure. And, again, I don’t know where he is. I—I’ll repeat what I said. I truly am not that concerned about him.”—George W. Bush, discussing Osama bin Ladin, Washington, D.C., Mar 13, 2002
“But all in all, it’s been a fabulous year for Laura and me.”—George W. Bush, summing up his first year in office, Washington, D.C., Dec. 20, 2001
To summarize (I know the wingnuts love talking points) Bush’s comments:
* We are not thinking about national security
* We’re promoting sheer propaganda
* We want to help those who would harm us
* Working three jobs to make ends meet is a good thing
* We should work to harm Americans
* We should consume more resources
* He’s not concerned about the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks
* 2001 was a fabulous year
Still waiting for an apology from Bush for this:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20061005/ts_alt_afp/usiraqbushpolitics
You wingnuts have a lot to be outraged about, get to it!
Senator Kerry is always criticizing President Bush for his actions on the handling of Iraq, and constantly wants him (Bush) to accept responsibility for a botched war here. While I have never agreed with the war in Iraq, it is our dutyas members of the military to serve our country, right or wrong, and without hesitation. Senator Kerry needs to take a good look in the mirror, start pointing fingers at himself, and accept responsibility for what he just said about our troops before he ever criticizes the handling of Iraq again. Has Senator Kerry suddenly forgotten that it is the troops here in Iraq that has given him the right to criticize our President in the first place? It is their great sacrifices that prevent him from being thrown in prison or executed for speaking out against our leaders. If he misspoke… fine… say so, and then he should apologize for what he actually did say… I don’t care about what he meant to say, or if it was meant to be a joke, it is what he did say that matters. If he apologizes then we can put it behind us, move on, and chock it up to a dumb comment. Until that day, John Kerry will NEVER be able to fulfill the office of Commander in Chief that he so deeply desires and he will never have the support of any man or woman I serve with in uniform.
C.S.
Ar Ramadi, Iraq
I am pretty sure that the people that are posting on here that “because of Kerry’s remarks they are now voting republican” or “becoming republicans” are actually republican party members trying, TRYING to get people to jump on that bandwagon. I find it terribly difficult to believe that someone would throw out their belief system because of one comment by one person. How many ridiculous comments has the president made?
Here are just a few:
Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we.” —Washington, D.C., Aug. 5, 2004
**Yikes, after hearing that the president wanted to harm our country, did anyone consider only voting democrat??
Maybe this will help swing you:
“At Harvard Business School, thirty years ago, George Bush was a student of mine. I still vividly remember him. In my class, he declared that “people are poor because they are lazy.” He was opposed to labor unions, social security, environmental protection, Medicare, and public schools. To him, the antitrust watch dog, the Federal Trade Commission, and the Securities Exchange Commission were unnecessary hindrances to “free market competition.” To him, Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal was “socialism.” “—This has been paraphrased by his former professor Yoshi Tsurimi
**Double yikes…but yet, no one seems to be able to rile up any anger towards this idiot…
And obviously there are thousands of other soundbytes where the glorious president has said something stupid, misleading or a flat out lie…where are the apologys for those statements…
And where is the apology for getting us into a war under false pretenses…
And where is the apology for squandering the budget SURPLUS that we had six years ago…
And where is the apology for turning the word “American” into a dirty word around the world…
As an American, I am more worried about these things than about some totally out of context remark that Kerry made…
There are MANY MANY intelligent people who are able to understand Kerry’s remarks for what they were…statements about the President’s failed Iraq policy. I just hope they get out an vote in this election…
Its time to take this country back
What a disgrace, and a sham of a cover up. I took this as a personal offense, having served in Iraq. I have sent this to a military mailing list to make sure that a few thousand other of my brothers and sisters in uniform see it and the text of the original speech. No matter how much spin you put on it, the words were spoken as they were.
Never before have I felt compelled to comment on a politician’s comment. Mr. Kerry, you should be ashamed of your comments about our troops and their abiltiy. You need a reality check Mr. BlueBlood - the military is VOLUNTARY! If you are implying that those who have no other options choose the military - you are nuts! The student loan and grant system is SPECIFICALLY structured to allow those with limited means attend college. Choosing the military as a vocation is noble and the troops should be respected.
I voted for John Kerry in 2004, and in general I support him.
But could Mr. Kerry please do the rest of us Democrats a favor and just keep his big mouth shut until after the elections? It’s crap like this that changes the news cycle and takes the focus away from where it should be. Please, please, please.
Just. Stop. Talking.
When I heard what Senator Kerry said I actually cried for our country. I can’t believe we have sunk to this level. President Kennedy must be spinning in his grave.
You Republicans must be very desperate indeed.
By stupidly and clumsily and tranparantly picking on this minor flub the way you are; you are actually directing MORE attention to Kerry’s intended remarks.
This spin distortion campaign will backfire…and if there was ever anyone who deserves to be fired back on; it’s this administration!
So keep up the good work.
The Rovian tactics only work for a while; America is catching up to the rest of the world and seeing through the lies of Bush/Rove/Cheney!
Smells like damage control Megan.
In fact, it is damage control!
I love how you broke down what Kerry said so we can understand what he meant. ; )
Get rid of Bush by putting one of these fools back in office?
No thanks!
“Kerry said the comment in question was “a botched joke about the president and the president’s people, not about the troops ... and they know that’s what I was talking about.”
I heard this on the radio this afternoon and the first thing that came to my mind was you were putting down the troops. You are a sorry piece of work. If “they” know what you were talking about, why are there all of these comments concerning your statement? And to think that all of these young men and women are fighting so that you are allowed to say such disgusting things. Shame on you John Kerry….shame shame on you. I hope you read this but it’s doubtful.
Dear Senator Kerry,
Thank you for striking back at those right wing nuts appropriately. It is time to stop allowing them to distort the record and comments made by real Americans. You are also right that if Senator McCain wants an apology he should demand it from George Bush. I wish you had taken on those disgraceful liars, the so called “Swift Boat Veterans for the Truth” in the same manner. Maybe today we wouldn’t be saddled with a completely incompetent, immoral, and un-American administration.
By the way Chris Udouj, I note that you referred to your family but it seems that you yourself are not a Vet. Well I am.
DO NOT BACK DOWN, Senator Kerry! You are right. The administration is trying to change the subject. Because even if you HAD meant to say something disparaging about the troops—which I believe you did not—not even that would be worth discussing on the same scale as the real problem here: the disgraceful way this president has led us into war and caused our troops to die, and for nothing noble. Keep the pressure on. Keep the focus on the topic at hand, as you did today. Please don’t back down—I haven’t heard anyone in Congress talk about the war like you did today, and I’m afraid that a so-called backlash will have a chilling effect on this critical dialog.
Go John Go!
To democrats, republicans ....,
Here’s a good read that will allow everyone to understand what Americans are up against in the IRAQ:
“Holy War:The Crusades and Their Impact on Today’s World”. The book was written in 1991 by Karen Armstrong and was revised in 1998 and 2001
“See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda.”—George W. Bush, Greece, N.Y., May 24, 2005
That sums it all up nicely.
Bush lies, the right wing spin machine puts out the “word”, people believe the lies….and here we are again.
Sorry Bush Kool Aid Drinkers…it doesn’t work any more. Too many people have died….your BS is tired.
So, Mr. Kerry, everyone who did not serve in uniform is a “coward”, “a stuffed shirt”? I pity you.
I voted for John Kerry in ‘04 too.
I am a veteran of 23.5 years of service in the United States Air Force. I hold three degrees and am in graduate school earning my fourth. Many of my veteran friends are also well educated as are many of our Active Duty service members. To suggest we are uneducated is inconsiderate and ignorant.
If you think about it, we have an all volunteer force, the caliber of which has never before entered into war for the United States. If you really want to speak the truth Mr. Kerry, suggest that the few are bearing the burden of the many. Only a thin slice of America is represented in the Armed Forces. The only thing that will change that is a return to the draft. If we keep losing 100 service members a month, that may not be too far away.
If what he said about the troops was a joke, it was in poor taste and came at a bad time. The Republicans are on the run, many of them distancing themselves from Bush and his horrific effort in Iraq.
We, as Democrats and Independents have an opportunity to change Capitol Hill in a few days. Until then Mr. Kerry, please stop talking. You are not helping us. No more jokes, and I believe you do owe an apology.
J. Jones, Phoenix, AZ.
I would never go to war…I love this country, but I will freely admit to being a COWARD…I would be scared out of my freaking nut. I think anyone that would not go to war is also a coward…its not a bad thing, its just the truth.
So, for a person who had the opportunity to be in a way (ahem, dubya) and chose not to…I would have to say that makes them a coward…right? That’s part of the choice, “I am too afraid to go to war”...again its not a bad thing…
UNTIL YOU MAKE THE CHOICE TO PUT OTHER YOUNG PEOPLE IN HARMS WAY…then its an AWFUL thing…to ask people to do something that you, yourself would not do…how comfortable would bush be to send his girls to Iraq…
When that happens I will believe that he is not a “coward”...until then, he is just a person who didn’t step up and fight when he could have and is putting other people in a situation that he could not put himself in…
John Kerry did go to war…he was not a coward then, and he is not a coward now…
Please keep it up Mr. Kerry…we need people like you in this country to show people how utterly stupid and dangerous bush and his croonies are…
American Legion to Sen. Kerry: Apologize Now
http://www.legion.org/?section=pub_relations&subsection=pr_listreleases&content=pr_press_release&id=405
” INDIANAPOLIS, October 31, 2006 - The National Commander of The American Legion called on Sen. John Kerry to apologize for suggesting that American troops in Iraq are uneducated. ”
John Kerry’s comments were very disturbing to me and my family. We have a son training to go overseas. We are a military family and my husband served his country proudly and served in Vietnam. So as a military wife I understand the hardships left on spouses and children. To hear his comments makes me think that those keeping HIM FREE have no education! I feel so sorry for the senator but I am so glad that he is not in the White House. Maybe when he goes to sleep tonight he might give some thought on what it really means to be thankful for his freedom and pray for those that not only have already served, but those that are now serving.
As an Air Force veteran who served in the first Gulf War, I must say that I am incensed by Mr. Kerry’s remarks today. If he intended the remarks to be directed toward President Bush and his Iraq policy, they were not worded very well. It is clear and easy to see how anyone (educated or not) would think his comment was directed at troops serving in the Iraqi theater. I hold a college degree, as do many servicemen and women. Our troops need to be intelligent and well-trained in order to operate today’s complex equipment, especially in such a complex part of the world as the Mideast. I believe Mr. Kerry should offer an apology to the troops and their families as a sign of good will, even if he claims the comments were not directed at them. I doubt the apology will be accepted, but it would be nice if he offered one.
Iraq: ‘We need $100B’ Government representative asks for billions for rebuilding as international aid conference begins.
As a 20 year veteran you are a disgrace to this country. There is no other way to interpret what you said and then to turn it around as a Republican ploy is cowardly. Military men and women make sacrifices every day for their country and you certainly don’t deserve the protection that they provide in order for American citizens to live freely. I don’t consider that ignorance on their part, it’s a deep display of committment to their country that shows intelligence and courage!
John Kerry, a recipient of a Purple Heart for paper cuts, mocks our President! Or did he really mock our troops? I do not believe for a minute the defense put forward by the “Mouth” and defender of all things LEFT wing, Chris Mathews. (He said it was clear to him that Kerry was making a joke about the President.)
What a jokester! Only in Massachusetts could this creep get elected. It’s been nice the last 2 years NOT having to hear from him. I certainly hope he continues on the campaign trail for the Dems!
Paul Alexander.. from good old “live free or die” New Hampshire.
I am so very sad….
I can not believe you will not say you are sorry to our boys…........................I heard your speech and so did they!!!!!
Dear Mr. Kerry,
This is the first time I have ever offered my opinion to a politician, but I do feel that this is a critial time for our country, and you, sir, are playing an active part in the political process.
Many people, like myself, are unsatisfied with our current president, particularly with the management of the war in Iraq, the economy, and with the direction our country is going. We are looking for real change not political name calling.
It is clear that your remarks toward the American Servicemen were inappropriate and degrading. Quit digging yourself deeper, and just admit that you mispoke, and apologize. In the real world, people make mistakes every day, and we learn to apologize, and make ammends. You politicians should try it sometime, instead of pretending you are always right, and then try to “spin” things in your favor.
Your “Bush bashing” is pretty much out of control. Believe me, I do not want to vote Republician, but from what you are showing me, it may be the better choice. Can’t you show some aspects true “Democratic” policy? How about if you try to reach out to the mainstream of the American people, and back away from the special intrest groups and the crazy combativeness. All you are doing is furthering the political rhetoric that we all are sick of hearing, and continuing to divide the country in to highly polarized camps. If you are to become a true leader, worthy of my vote, you’ll figure out that what this country needs is someone to unite us under common goals, beliefs, and values. If you focus on these things, and not the special intrests, or the wedge issues, you will win my vote, and certainly others like me. If you keep spewing rediculous nonsense like you have been lately, the country will likely be no better if the Dems take back congress. The government will just be being run by another set of clueless politicians, furthering their own special interest and careers.
You are a disgrace to my country, my armed services and our proud heritage. You are a scab on the posterior of society. Instead of trying to double-speak, weasel and kiss-up your constituents and flunkies, maybe you should take your pompous behind out into the real world and get a real job with your “education”. That is what our troops do daily. They don’t run their mouths and sit behind their wives’ millions. Loser.
This is great,, Rep’s don’t have to do anything. Just sit back and let the Dems put their foot in their mouths. I love it
Senator Kerry, you are a true hero and one of my heroes. You are absolutely right in your comments today and they could not have come at a better time or from a better person. I believe in you and I believe you should run in 2008. Sure, you made some mistakes in 2004. Sure, the GOP slander machine was at work back then and even now. But your comments today and in the past few years after the ‘04 election have proved you have the courage to stand up for what is right in America and stand up for the American people. You served this country bravely during Vietnam and you have every right to make comments like this.
Can’t wait to work on your next campaign,
Sean

October U.S. death toll in Iraq hits 103
BAGHDAD, (AP) — The American death toll for October climbed past 100, a grim milestone as a White House envoy turned up unexpectedly in Baghdad on Monday following a rough patch in U.S.-Iraqi ties. At least 81 people were killed across Iraq, including 33 in a bombing targeting workers.
The U.S. military on Tuesday announced the deaths of two soldiers, raising the number of troops killed in fighting in Iraq this month to 103.
Who do you think is more supportive of our troops? A decorated war veteran whose party is fighting to give them more protection and better benefits and to get them out of harm’s way, or a draft-dodger who is about to see his faulty (and false) Iraq policy usher in a new era of Democratic House (and Senate?) rule? Bush will say and do ANYTHING to help his party now. We are with you, Senator Kerry, and we are with the troops.
Re: Posted by J. Jones | October 31, 2006 6:19 PM
Here is the text as intended, and JK has used it before:
Gee, “geting US stuck in a war in Iraq”? Now, who could he possibly be talking about? It wasn’t the troops who got us stuck in Iraq!
John Kerry is right: the ones who owe the troops an apology are Bush, Rumsfeld, Cheney, and the rest of the sorry lot who couldn’t even figure out that ammo dumps might ought to be guarded once you invade a country.
John,
PLEASE keep your thoughts to yourself until the election is over. No reason to provide any fuel to the Republicans.
I am utterly speechless. What were you thinking?
Senator Kerry, you have fallen to a new low. Sir you insult my father who served in World WarII, my Uncle who served in Korea, myself who served in the Vietnam era, my son who is currently serving, and every veteran who has ever served. I suggest to you that you have comitted such a grevious act on the American Public, an apology is insufficient. Your words were crystal clear as to what you said and what you meant by them. There is but one Honorable course for you to take now and you should resign from the U.S. Senate and leave politics completely. I ask you, Do you have the decency to do the right thing?
My grandfather was awarded the purple heart during his service to our country, two of them in fact. He earned his while fighting for a nation that he loved and a cause that he believed in. He was not an uneducated man. My father served in the military, becayse he wanted to, not because he was somehow unintelligent. Now my son is serving in the air force, stationed in Kuwait. After a year of “doing his homework” he made the decision to serve because it was the right thing for him to do, not because it was the only option for his unedewkated self.
I notice you do not post a transcript of your remarks here on your web site yet you are so adamant that you have been misrepresented. I’ve heard your remarks and read the transcript. I did not need to have them explained to me by some Republican snatching at the opportunity to sling some mud in order to feel sickened by them.
Even if your remarks were aimed at the President of the United States of America and not our military men and women I am just as sickened. The behavior I am seeing from our leaders, this complete, blatant disrespect for the man who holds the highest office in the land saddens me. I was raised poor. I raised my children as a single mother in poverty. I had nowhere near the economic and educational opportunities that you have had and yet your behavior is base, unprofessional, disrespectful, hateful and rude. Is that what a good education will get you? Perhaps my children and I are better off without it.
Dear John,
I am from Massachusetts, I am a Democrat, and I am proud to say that I did not vote for you in the 2004 presidential election. I am proud to say that today, John.
If you are going to make comments about Iraq, make them constructive. There is nothing humorous about the situation in Iraq, and for you to include Iraq in any attempt at humor is not only embarrassing to you but offensive to me. It does not matter that you meant to throw GW under the bus - there is NOTHING funny about the situation in Iraq.
I went to school with a man who went to Iraq as an Army MP, helping to train the Iraqi Police. He died there and left 2 children and a wife behind. Is there humor in that, John?
You are an embarassment to the Democratic party - do us a favor and keep your mouth shut. And don’t run for president again - the only rerun we need is Al Gore.
Best Regards,
Mike James
Hey, College Student,
Remember when “W” said, “the terrorists never stop thinking of ways to harm America, and neither do I”?
actual quote per USAToday
‘You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well.
If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq,’
Doesn’t sound like “us” to me
Hey, I just want to say I support John Kerry all the way against the latest idiotic right-wing smear. Don’t back down! You’re in the right, so show those cowardly blow hards what real courage is!
Senator, I wish that you had taken this stand during the election. You could have spared this country another term of inept “leadership” (a misnomer in the case of this administration) and the lives of hundreds of servicemen and women.
Nevertheless, you are doing the right thing now. Only blind, misplaced loyalty can account for the support of the president’s policy in Iraq.
In addition to all of those points you made about the presidents failures, about the fact that those “HACKs” actually are hiding behind the troops, you should have included the fact that although they are making new disabled veterans at a record pace, they continue to deny those veterans benefits they have earned such as concurrent receipt of retirement and disability benefits… not to mention the thousands of broken families caused by these protracted assignments in Iraq and Afghanistan.
I urge people to look at the facts, unencumbered by political rhetoric… if you do, you can’t deny that from the very beginning of the IRAQ war, this administration failed the troops at every turn, from the reason they are there, to a failure to provide safe and adequate equipment, and the most basic of all, a sound strategy coupled with a failure to allow the brave and loyal leadership of the armed forces to prosecute an effective war.
We are in dire straits and I hope that the midterm elections provide my country with an opportunity to provide appropriate direction to the effort in Iraq and ultimately, a timely withdrawal.
Go away, freeper trolls. Sen. Kerry blotched a joke; your idiot neocon masters blotched an entire war.
THE CHICKEN HAWKS STRIKE AGAIN! BECAUSE THEY’RE RUNNING SCARED!
This is nothing but another Republican attempt to distract voters from the incredible disaster they have created.
What a desperate, pathetic and shameless bunch we have serving in the WH. If war is so great, why didn’t they go serve when it was their turn? Why aren’t they sending their own kids off to serve in combat?
Like Senator Kerry served in Viet Nam?
But hey, it’s just so much easier for the chicken hawks to play dirty politics. It’s all they are capable of, really. Their one skill.
How truly tragic for America that anyone listens to these cowards who send others to die in their, and their kid’s place.
By the way, my husband volunteered to join the military, and served in Viet Nam, ( while brave George Bush Jr. was saying “Just say no.” ) and he fully supports Senator Kerry’s statements. 100%
The facts are that most of the people serving in Iraq are not from wealthy political families? Why are the chicken hawks kids better than the rest?
As anyone knows, a lot of our troops join because they want to further their education and need the financial help from the military to do so.
Senator Kerry, who has actually seen combat, seems to think getting good grades in order to get financial help with one’s college education is a better way to go about getting a good education than going off to possibly die in this bogus war.
Those folks who claim Kerry insulted our troops might want to recall that Kerry volunteered to serve in Viet Nam DESPITE the fact that he could have gotten his education without financial help.
What does this tell people about his character? About Kerry’s true feelings about serving his country in war out of a sense of patriotism?
Now, what does it tell you about the chicken hawks?
Kerry’s volunteer service in combat shows beyond all doubt that he does not disrespect those who go into the military out of their own sense of patritotism.
The claim that Kerry implied our troops are stupid is an incredibly absurd accusation in light of this fact.
But those now trying so hard to distort Kerry’s stance miss this obvious point for some strange reason. Desperation maybe?
Like most Americans, Kerry believes this war is a bogus one, based on lies and distortions, just like Bush’s latest attack. He doesn’t want to see more and more young people die in this bogus, pathetically planned out, exitless war.
It’s the Chicken hawks who sent our troops into Iraq who should be on their knees apologizing for all the death and destruction their poorly planned and exit void war has cost this nation.
I have supported John Kerry for several years but his comments today were very hurtful and made me really angry!
My grandson joined the Navy while still in high school because he was duped into believing he had no choice by a recruiter. One of the recruiters that have been given free reign of our public schools by “No Child Left Behind”.
He wanted to go to college but knew his mother couldn’t afford to pay for it. My daughter worked two jobs to support her children and would have worked three to put her son through college rather than have him join the military. And she told him that. Johnny’s response was “I know Mom, that’s why I did it”.
Johnny is a good, smart boy who worked very hard to keep his grades up all through high school - but that just isn’t enough to get someone into college, let alone through four years of it!
Johnny is being deployed to Iraq in two weeks.
Even if John Kerry didn’t mean to say what he said, he said it. He needs to apologize to all the Johnny’s out there who are risking their lives because they wanted to get out of poverty and were tricked by lying recruiters and inept politicians!
TD asks, “Even Democratic strategists are saying he should shut up. Good Grief! Is he surrounded by idiots?”
He clearly is here at least.
Incorrect Casualty Reporting Investigated
Associated Press
Tuesday, October 31, 2006; Page A16
The families of seven soldiers who died in Iraq or Afghanistan received incorrect or misleading information about the deaths, the Army concluded after a review of war casualty reports.
Wow, John Kerry really knows how to:
A) Drive traffic to his website
B) Open up a can of whoopass
C) Focus the debate back onto Iraq in the last week of the election
D) Rile up the Republican Keyboard Brigade
E) All of the above
Time to go trick or treating soon, have a great evening everybody.
You people are idiots!!! It’s so obvious that Kerry was slamming Bush when he spoke about the need for an education so you don’t create policies that get us stuck in Iraq. Stop trying to defend the indefensible blunders of this administation. A change is long overdue!!
You botched a joke but it still sounded like you where insulting our troops in Iraq. Your explanation of what you meant to say isn’t enough. You need to apologize for the way it sounded. Stop being a politician and be a man.
Luis:
Sorry, I forgot the link above. I have heard Kerry use this line before, just as Taylor says here:
http://www.taylormarsh.com/archives_view.php?id=24759
I wasn’t at the event where he allegedly dropped the “us” from the sentence, but I had heard it before so I didn’t even realize it was a big deal.
Senator Kerry has stood up for veterans and the military all his adult life - despite the RW smears that attempt to twist his words. This little tempest in a teapot will not change one whit his strong Senate record of working to improve veteran’s and military benefits.
Max Cleland’s words are better than mine:
“I think people will remember John Kerry’s press conference today as the moment we Democrats stopped once and forever accepting the disgraceful smears of Republicans. John Kerry showed our Party how to fight back with the truth.
“John Kerry is a patriot who has fought tooth and nail for veterans ever since he came home from Vietnam. He has stood with his brothers in arms unlike this Administration which exploits our troops to make a political point and divide America.
If anyone thinks a veteran would criticize the more than 140,000 heroes serving in Iraq and not the president who got us stuck there, they’ve got a partisan political agenda and that’s the bottom line. “
I’ll just add to Cleland’s words my personal admiration for your guts, your grit, and your deep patriotism.
Your comments last night about our troops were despicable, and your statements today defending it as an attack on the president are just as despicable. Such an attack on the president is just as inappropriate as your smear of our soldiers.
You built your career with a smear of our soldiers who served in Viet Nam and later smeared our soldiers in Iraq for committing atrocities, so do not try to spin to us that you would not criticize our soldiers.
Please do the country a favor and resign from the US Senate.
QUESTION: What do you say to the men and women fighting in Iraq if they hear this in passing, that may be confused on the issue, sir?
KERRY: They will hear what I just said. I honor their service, and I always have.

JK,
Don’t trust anybody when it comes to something like this. Remembering what the swifties did to you makes me think that those serving in the military, whom you have fought tirelessly to support and defend, will be subjected to the constant bombardment of propaganda.
Hey, you have a great friend in John McCain don’t you? He is the ultimate slime ball.
The Republicans need to come up with something before the November elections. We’re in a war that we shouldn’t be in. That’s worse than anybody’s comments.

grow up loser.
I have never been prouder of a vote than the vote I cast for you in 2004 and I am looking forward to voting for you again in 2008. Way to piss off all the impotent cowards who like to pretend that they are veterans on the internet. Keep up the good work and never apologize for telling the truth.
My letter to John Kerry:
Hi Sen. Kerry,
I’ve been following the manufactured outrage and stage-managed uproar over your recent speech. I also read your press release in response.
I want to compliment you on saying what needed to be said. I think you’re being misquoted and the whole thing spun like a top, but I’m greatly cheered by your strong response. Coming out swinging like that is exactly what you, me and our party needs today. Outstanding, sir!
I just wanted to send this e-mail so you know that there’s a MAJORITY of us out here who are not fooled by Bush, McCain and the rest of the cornered wild animals who are lashing out at you right now.
And to say thanks!
Senator Kerry,
I know that no one in an official capacity will probably read this, but I think it is time you made one statement:
1) I apologize if any troops thought I was saying they were uneducated.
2) My intention was to state that the president is the uneducated one.
3) The President’s well-connected father was able to place George W. Bush in a National Guard unit which was certain to avoid deployment to Vietnam. The Vice President had multiple deferrments to also avoid service in Vietnam. They were cowards then, and they are cowards now.
4) Veterans like John McCain and Bob Dole sat on the sidelines when a fellow veteran was being defamed on the national stage, and now Sen. McCain, formerly of the Straight Talk Express, is in bed with the lunatic fringe like Bob Jones University. They will do anything to win.
Say it once, then get out of the way until Election Day, Senator.
It’s time to stop pussy-footing around with these fools.
Hey JEWELL - are you a member of Kerry’s welfare food stamp supporters?
You are quite the spinster!
Sorry Senator… I voted for you in 2004 and I was appalled by the “swiftboating” of your campaign, but the smug, botched or no, joke was so far out of line and so incredibly unthinking and insensitive, well, I am not surprised. You don’t get it. This country more and more is being run by a privileged plutocracy, like Bush, Cheney and yourself, and the majority of those dying in Iraq are working class. Rather than a joke, an arrogant insider comment among privileged politicians and supporters, you could have spoken honestly about those who bear the burden of this most unfortunate war; a war you voted for.
You gave this foundering, corrupt and impossible administration something to hang their political survival on; something to divert attention, to smear democrats with. You just don’t get it.
I hope you don’t run in 2008. I hope the Democratic Party finds someone whose thoughtful, honest and unafraid to speak up when it counts. You didn’t oppose this war when the rest of us were marching in the streets to SAY NO.
So very disappointed! If this smug little gaffe gives the Republican propaganda machine a leg up, if perchance this elongates (I’m sure video ad spots are already being created) you’ll be responsible for saving these scumbags.
Get a clue, be circumspect and thoughtful.
With passion like this we need JAB in IRAQ:
“If he’s not going to apologize, we’re going to beat him to death until he does,” Rep. John Boehner (D.-Ohio), the House majority leader, told Fox News late this afternoon.
I am a former registered Democrat and currently registered Republican. Thank you for saying what needed to be said! Your response to the Republicans today was the finest, brightest and most eloquently delivered political press conference I have seen since JFK announced the Cubans had missiles. I believe you should strongly consider running again for the Presidency. This time I think you can carry Florida. Sorry, I think you carried it last time also.
Taylor Marsh nails it again: GOP Weapons of Mass Distraction
Kerry was trashing the incompetent commander in chief. Nothing new.
This is for the whole election. Even Chris Matthews gets it. He knows who Kerry was talking about. No one should be surprised Kerry is attacking Bush and the Republicans. As for why Kerry’s attacking Bush, it’s obvious. As if we haven’t heard enough verbal gaffes from Bush.
....(she proceeds to list just a few)</blockquote>
Senator Kerry
I am now so glad that I was never voted for you in the past, and now I will NEVER VOTE FOR YOU. I have a brother that is a major in the US Army serving his second term in Iraqi and let me explain to you he was third in his high school class, went to UofI and graduated with a aeronautical engineering degree. I don’t believe that would fall under you comment. You owe eveyone in this country an apology, exspecially the troops and thier families. Our troops responded to call for the United states not because they lacked education.
I am so incredibly proud of John Kerry for standing up against this ridiculous attack. I wish he had done this when they swift-boated him. Those draft-dodging, corporate whores don’t care one whit about our troops and all of you who think they do are deluding yourselves.
I know the Republicans are grabbing at this like grim death because they want nothing more than to shift the Dems onto defense heading into the election. You know what? This is good—let’s talk about Iraq 24/7 for the next week. That’s exactly what we need to be doing, and I guarantee you that hurts no one but the President and his corrupt party.
Ultimately when the nation throws out the Republican crooks and liars, these same people who are here demonstrating their ignorance and faked outrage will be thankful that their masters have been removed from office.
So why don’t you losers take a moment and thank all of us who have fought so hard on your behalf. Or maybe you are satisfied seeing your hard earn taxes go to Halliburton, Exxon-Mobil and big pharmaceuticals. Think about it. Or maybe you shouldn’t, your heads might explode.
Senator Kerry,
You should point out to George W the number of recruiting stations there are in areas such as Chevy Chase and other wealthy, educated areas versus the poor neighborhoods of our country. Obviously they target the poor, less educated.
I am a Vet. I am neither a Republican or a Democrat, I think both parties are overflowing with scum bags in office.
I find your comments about the education level of the troops in IRAQ to be offensive. You say now that you meant them to be relevant to the President, but I have listened to them several times, and I cannot take them that way. You need to apologize immediately.
If you don’t then you can go @#$% yourself, you are a disgrace to all the men and women that have ever served with Honor.
I agreee Rachel let’s keep talking about it. It only hurts the Republicans.
As a USAF vet who is Canadian I was in Detroit as well as Washington in the early 70’s and observed people making use of their democratic rights. Many of us served so this would be possible. Free speech is an important part of democracy and we do not have to agree with any Commanders when we are civilians. Where was President Bush during that Viet Nam War and where Rumsfeld, Cheney? Perhaps they could be sent to serve in Iraq. They certainly are willing to send the youth of todays society, both educated and those still searching. I have a love for the USA and its people, I am not sure the Bush team does. This is not about which party one belongs to at all. Thank you John Kerry for clarifying who owes the apology
am
Your “joke” was tasteless, as well as disgusting. To make a comment about the President (if that was what you truly meant, though I doubt it) shows you have no taste at all. I hate to think that a Senator thinks servicemembers are stupid. I was an A student in high school and joined the Army a few years after high school when college became too expensive. I’ve been active duty for almost 14 years now, and in that time I’ve earned an Associate degree, a Bachelor’s degree, and now I’ve been accepted into a Master’s program at Liberty University. Servicemembers are FAR from stupid Senator. You are so far out of touch with the common people, and it shows.
I find John Kerry’s “Joke” about Bush’s ignorance leading us into Iraq far less insulting than G Dub looking for weapons of mass destruction under a table at a media dinner. Stupid jokes aside, Bush guided an angry and emotional country into Iraq with misinformation….not Kerry.
If you don’t want to vote Republican, just say no!
Or you could abstain.
Don’t, however, use the words of Kerry to excuse your approval of the incompetence and cruel actions of Bush. Bush is screaming because he has no other option: his administration is about to lose Iraq…having already lost Baghdad. Or didn’t you see that announcement of the US pulling back from the Sadr City checkpoints?
As for all you indignant and insulted vets. You did yell and scream about the insult that the Republicans gave to all wounded vets at their convention when they mocked the Purple Heart, didn’t you? Didn’t you?
If you want to vote for a weakling president, who cannot even control his own cabinet, much less win a war, that’s your right. Just don’t blame Kerry’s, or anyone else’s, words for your actions.
John…would you like some cheese with that whine?
Senitor Kerry, please, please , please get over the 04’ election. Your continuous griping and complaining for two years has made me more determined than ever that a man like you should never be allowed to be President. The position calls for maturity (you ain’t got it), professionalism (you ain’t got it), dedication to our government (you ain’t got it), and the ability to support our troups and protect our country (you wont do it).
Senitor Kerry, I am ashamed of you! I am ashamed that a fine State like Mass could continue to elect people like you and Ted Kennedy. It really tells the rest of the country that the voters vote for a popular name and not a track record or moral conviction.
My name is Mike LeBleu and I approve this statement. I actually thought about what I was going to type before I did it. Maybe you should try it.
AMVETS Calls on Senator to Apologize to Troops
( http://www.amvets.org )
” LANHAM, Md., Oct. 31 /U.S. Newswire/—AMVETS’ National Commander expressed disbelief and disappointment in the comments by Senator John Kerry Monday.
“For the Senator to suggest that today’s United States military is made up of uneducated men and women who didn’t ‘study hard’ or ‘make an effort to be smart’ is ridiculous and appalling,” AMVETS National Commander Thomas C. McGriff said Tuesday.
“The men and women in uniform today make up the most advanced, highly-educated force ever seen. To suggest otherwise is a slap in the face to every soldier, sailor, airman, Marine and Coast Guardsman who has spent countless hours working to better him or herself (..)
“Senator Kerry should retract his remarks and apologize immediately,” McGriff said after listening to comments made by Senator Kerry at a political rally in Pasadena, Calif., Monday. “It is especially outrageous coming from a member of the U.S. Senate.”

I find Joh Kerry’s comment yesterday Quote: “those not being able to navigate the education system end up in Iraq”...... extremely insulting.
I have a son in the United States Air Force as well as three nephews in the United States Navy and what he said yesterday has upset my family immensely. How disrepectful of him to make such a comment.
He is an embarrassement to this country.
I Thank God that he did not become our President.
“You know, education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don’t, you get stuck in Iraq.”
I wholeheartedly hope that you never become the President of the United States. I graduated from high school and now attend college. I served in Iraq. I proudly serve in the Army because I want to earn my freedom. How dare you disrespect the people who fight to make sure you keep yours.
My son put off college to do what he thought was his duty as an american citizen. He is a proud american and people like you have no right to insult him or any other soldier. He asked to go to Iraq to do his duty as an american citizen. He is not stupid and he is not a coward. You need to apologize to every american soldier that you have insulted. GOD BLESS AMERICA
Senator Kerry-
I am pained to say that you sir, have acted like an ass. At a time when Democrats have an opportunity to regain ground you have alienated our servicemen, their family and friends. And you refuse to apologize? I voted for you. I trusted you to lead this country from a higher intellectual and moral platform. You appear to be even more out of touch, smug and isolated than the current administration. How is that even possible?
Mr. Kerry,
You are a disgrace to our country. Don’t forget the men and women of our armed services protects your freedoms too! Something all your money can’t buy! And our sevice members do it for next to nothing, except when they have to pay with their LIFE!!!!
I’m a Vietnam vet and I believe that one of the most despicable things about this war is that millions of Americans have not had to serve. Again, as in Vietnam we have let others bear the burden, often for multiple deployments. I interpreted Senator Kerry’s remarks as a comment on this hypocrisy. Our President is willing to continue this war without asking all Americans to serve. Why, because he and his supporters know that America would balk at such a proposal. Instead for three years the administration has tired to sell us on the idea that our mission is accomplished and that we can do the job with our current forces. Our sons and daughters (or some of us) are paying the price for this mismanagement of the war.
I’ll echo TD and mbk’s echo of Max Cleland’s words
(I love Max Cleland)
