Live Blogging JK on The Colbert Report

polarbears-sml.jpg It’s just about time for JK’s appearance on The Colbert Report. I’m told that Mr. Colbert has a thing about bears. I wonder what he thinks about polar bears … one of those species affected by climate change and global warming.

We’ll see if they come up in tonight’s discussion. Get ready to liveblog here at 11:30 pm ET / 10:30 pm CT.

That is the best explanation yet for what happened to the White House e-mails that were deleted.  Magneto burst in and got them or they drove home on too little sleep, fell asleep at the wheel and drove over a cliff.

That actually makes more sense than what the WH has admitted to when you think about it.

If you missed the pre-show (TDS), you really should watch a replay or check their site for the Ted Stevens segment.
I’m guessing that one will be all over ‘the tubes’.
LOL.

The Tinkerbell version of foreign policy… nicely said Jon.

Posted by Violet | 04/16/07, 07:26 PM EST

Andy Card is on TDS, which is without volume for some strange reason. LOL!

Posted by ProSense | 04/16/07, 07:26 PM EST

Have fun guys, and squee loud!  I’ll be tuning in later.  GV, thanks for the tip on TDS; I will be sure to catch it tonight.

Posted by democrafty | 04/16/07, 07:26 PM EST

Well, Stephen Colbert was overcome by the cuteness of the baby polar bear Knut!  :)

Posted by aRoseforJK | 04/16/07, 07:28 PM EST

Gee, taytay, and here all along I was believing that those 5 million emails vanished because they were called up in the virtual Rapture. Thanks for busting my bubble by providing an even less plausible alternative explanation.

Posted by Otter | 04/16/07, 07:29 PM EST

Jon is about ready to throw it to Stephen.  Yay!

Posted by Island Blue | 04/16/07, 07:29 PM EST

ProSense, you crack me up.

Time for Colbert!

Posted by GV | 04/16/07, 07:31 PM EST

Hahaha! Colbert: Just what the environment needs more books!

Posted by ProSense | 04/16/07, 07:32 PM EST

I don’t know that virtual rapture story is pretty good.  I think they should present that on Thursday on ‘Da Al G Show’  LOL!

Posted by taytay | 04/16/07, 07:32 PM EST

Colbert joked that about Gonzales having legalizing more ways that could make him talk when he appears before the Senate.

Posted by karennj | 04/16/07, 07:32 PM EST

Colbert intro’ing JK’s coming on the show to promote his new environmental book:  “Because that’s just what the environment needs: more books.”

Something tells me this is going to be tons o’ fun tonight.

Posted by Otter | 04/16/07, 07:33 PM EST

Yeah, okay, Sean Penn was a little over the top, I think.  And Bush has special underwear that wicks away moisture.

That was not anywhere near Boston for an accent.  Oskah?

Posted by taytay | 04/16/07, 07:34 PM EST

Stpehen sounds kind of like he has a cold.  Hope he doesn’t give it to JK.

Posted by Island Blue | 04/16/07, 07:35 PM EST

Colbert hearkening back to his calling out Sean Penn a few shows back and challenging him to a “Battle of the Metaphors”—and now he’s just spewing out so many metaphors that he’s having to stop and catch his breath between phrases.

But that’s okay… because a man’s speech must exceed his gasp, else what’s a metaphor?

Posted by Otter | 04/16/07, 07:37 PM EST

I want to see a Kerry/Colbert “Guitar Solo Challenge”.

And bears.

“The Word” is my favorite segment.  Gonzales.

Posted by GV | 04/16/07, 07:37 PM EST

All Alberto Gonzales did was lie to Congress, so let’s not make a federal case out of it.  lol

Posted by ProSense | 04/16/07, 07:37 PM EST

Stephen definitely has a cold, no sneezing on the Senator, Colbert.

Posted by fedup | 04/16/07, 07:38 PM EST

Tell Lindsey Graham that Lindsey is a girl’s name.
And Graham is a cracker!

OMG!  LOL.

Posted by GV | 04/16/07, 07:40 PM EST

That was an excellent ‘The Word’ segment.  Unfortunately, I don’t think ‘forgetting’ what happened will be the AG’s problem in front of the Judiciary Committee on Thursday. As Colbert pointed out, he has already forgotten so much, like the Constitution and that pesky habeas corpus thing.

Fortunately for the rest of the blog world reading these cryptic comments after the fact, Comedy Central also reruns Stewart and Colbert twice the next day—Colbert again tomorrow at 2:30 and 8:30 ET.  Comedy Central also features key segments of both shows on their website for later streaming. No doubt JK’s appearance on Colbert tonight will qualify as a ‘key segment’ in that regard. (And, I’m sure, it’ll end up being available here on the site in a day or two as well.)

Posted by Otter | 04/16/07, 07:46 PM EST

Wolfowitz’s girlfriend got $193,000 tax free?  Wow, I want that job.  (Ahm but not if it comes with Paul Wolfowitz.)

Posted by taytay | 04/16/07, 07:47 PM EST

JK almost up.  Next segment!

Posted by Island Blue | 04/16/07, 07:48 PM EST

And in California, it will be on in 3 hours…11:30 PDT.

Posted by YvonneCa | 04/16/07, 07:48 PM EST

All right, here we go!  “Please welcome… Senator John Kerry!”

Posted by Otter | 04/16/07, 07:50 PM EST

Huge ovation.  “Good to be with you.  I think.”

Posted by Island Blue | 04/16/07, 07:50 PM EST

Okay, the ‘are you running stuff.’  Well, get that out of the way quickly.

Posted by taytay | 04/16/07, 07:51 PM EST

JK looks like he’s having fun already—man, that guy’s got a *huge* smile when he gets the chance to let it shine forth.

Posted by Otter | 04/16/07, 07:51 PM EST

Hahaha, the he put the recent quote (about the rumor he’s back) on a bumper sticker.

Posted by ProSense | 04/16/07, 07:52 PM EST

Nice joking between the two of them.  Now getting down to business about the book.

Posted by Island Blue | 04/16/07, 07:53 PM EST

Sen. Kerry is doing very well dealing with SC.  He is matching him for quips very well.

Posted by taytay | 04/16/07, 07:53 PM EST

Colbert: So where do you come down on the environment? Are you for it or against it?”

JK: Well, I was for it before I was against it…

Posted by Otter | 04/16/07, 07:53 PM EST

Yay!

Steven:  I have been gunnin for you since ...

Steven asking Sen K if this is the first time he’s not been running for Pres.

Showing the video clip from Denver where JK says he’s not thinking of running at this time.

Steven: So, where do you come down on the environment?

JK: I was against it before I was for it.

Posted by GV | 04/16/07, 07:53 PM EST

I’m not familiar with his tie.  Is it blue or gray?

Posted by Island Blue | 04/16/07, 07:54 PM EST

The market decided Global Warming was real when Al Gore’s movie made money.  LOL!

Posted by taytay | 04/16/07, 07:54 PM EST

Colbert now talking about the Kerry-Gingrich debate, said he’d listened to it on C-Span Radio over the weekend.  C-Span has radio, too? Wow. Who knew?

Posted by Otter | 04/16/07, 07:54 PM EST

Nice.  Maybe you (SC) should run for President.  You are starting out with your own nation.  That’s more than most people start out having.

Posted by taytay | 04/16/07, 07:55 PM EST

Colbert is arguing Newt’s point, let the market decide.

Posted by ProSense | 04/16/07, 07:55 PM EST

Steven talking about environmentalism harming the economy.

JK talking about how it’s a win-win for the marketplace, about major corporations who are making more money creating technologies of the future.

Posted by GV | 04/16/07, 07:56 PM EST

“Good luck with the campaign” Stephen said at the end.

Posted by Island Blue | 04/16/07, 07:56 PM EST

That was short but great.  So many guests get overwhelmed by SC, but Kerry really did well.

Posted by taytay | 04/16/07, 07:56 PM EST

Actually, JK’s tie tonight is kind of a slate green / teal color with little gold elements in it, maybe fleurs-de-lis.

And it looks *exactly* like the fabric our dining room chairs had on their seat pads when I was a kid, too.

No, I have no idea what if anything Freud would have to say about that particular mental association…

Posted by Otter | 04/16/07, 07:57 PM EST

Hmm, Colbert interviews are difficult to live-blog—they’re short anyway, and then he flips sentences & topics around so rapidly that one cannot type fast enough to keep up.

Posted by Otter | 04/16/07, 07:58 PM EST

Great job, everyone…thank you!  I’m looking forward to watching the show later tonight.

Posted by YvonneCa | 04/16/07, 07:58 PM EST

I loved when JK said to SC - “You should run for president.  You already have your own nation.”

Posted by Island Blue | 04/16/07, 08:00 PM EST

I love the bumper sticker:

“Could that change?  It might.  It may change over years.  It may change over months.  I can’t tell you, but I’ve said very clearly I don’t consider myself out of it forever.”
Kerry ‘08

I’m going to need a bigger car.

Speaking of JK running for President, we are delivering the first batch of messages to Senator Kerry soon!  So if you wanted to send a message or know someone who would, please join us!

Messages collected until 11:59pm EDT on Wednesday, April 18th will be included in this batch.

I loved the bumper sticker reference too. That and everything Senator Kerry said.

Posted by wisteria | 04/16/07, 08:54 PM EST

It was wonderful to see Senator Kerry’s Denver interview. My family and I completely support him if he decides to run. There is still time. He would be the only Democratic candidate who can say that he is a war hero. None of the others have that distinction and that is what sets him apart.

We will wait patiently for him to decide. But the fact that the Democratic Convention will be in Denver, his birth city, really feels like a clear sign to those of us who want to see him in the Oval Office.

Great live blogging, guys.  I finally got to watch it, and thought it was really funny.  Colbert knew he had material to “nail” JK with and did that bumper sticker joke.  But Sen. Kerry had a great comeback that added in an environmental twist:  a “recycled” ‘04 bumper sticker.  Most excellent.  Great interview—my only complaint being that it was too short.

Posted by beachmom | 04/17/07, 06:05 AM EST

I saw the senator on the Colbert show and he was great! I loved the interview and the chemistry between Kerry and Colbert.  I hope you do enter the 2008 race Senator!

Posted by Emily | 04/17/07, 09:58 AM EST

kerry4prez: I disagree with one point.  There is one other person who is a war hero in the race right now and that’s Mike Gravel.  He was in the army and also is the one who ended the draft.
