Posted by Violet | 03/23/07, 02:27 AM EST

Could you keep it down up there?

LOL.

They’re talking basketball.

Posted by GV | 03/23/07, 02:28 AM EST

JK just walked into the studio and interrupted Imus while he was talking about basketball—Imus giving him some good-natured sass for not waiting until after the commercial break.

Posted by Otter | 03/23/07, 02:28 AM EST

JK and THK both sitting at the desk in the studio, Imus doing their intros.

Posted by Otter | 03/23/07, 02:32 AM EST

THK Looking wonderful this a.m.

Posted by fedup | 03/23/07, 02:32 AM EST

Wish I could see it - I’ll have to settle for listening.  Talking about the languages THK speaks.

Posted by Island Blue | 03/23/07, 02:33 AM EST

OK, THK is on the set.  She looks lovely.
She’s almost awake.
Talking about Teresa’s accent and how many languages she speaks.
Imus says JK is still working on English.
Talking about Elizabeth Edwards.  Says she was very upbeat when they spoke.

Posted by GV | 03/23/07, 02:34 AM EST

Imus asking “what’s with the accent?” JK pointing out that Teresa’s first language is Portugese, explains her background. Teresa agrees, notes that John’s first language is English—in fact, he teaches English. “In his sleep.”

Talking about Elizabeth Edwards’ cancer now.

Posted by Otter | 03/23/07, 02:34 AM EST

Talking about conversation yesterday with Elizabeth Edwards.

Posted by Island Blue | 03/23/07, 02:34 AM EST

They spoke to the Edwards yesterday and that you just have to go on.

Posted by karennj | 03/23/07, 02:35 AM EST

Imus & JK now talking about Bishop Patterson, who died a few hours ago and whose wife was on the air right before JK’s arrival.

Posted by Otter | 03/23/07, 02:35 AM EST

Imus hasn’t read the book.  His wife has, says it’s extrodinary.

Posted by Island Blue | 03/23/07, 02:37 AM EST

Finally talking about the book.  Imus still hasn’t read it but his wife has.

Posted by Violet | 03/23/07, 02:37 AM EST

JK getting the interview back on topic now. JK: “So did you read the book?”  Imus: “Um, no.”  JK: “Well, then, when are you going to?”

JK now telling some of the stories in the book.

Posted by Otter | 03/23/07, 02:37 AM EST

Talking about the book now.  Imus said his wife says it’s extraordinary.
Talking about some of the people in the book and what they’re doing about the environment.

Posted by GV | 03/23/07, 02:38 AM EST

Talking about individuals mentioned in the book.

Posted by Island Blue | 03/23/07, 02:38 AM EST

Imus hasn’t read the book - but Deidre did and she says it is amazing. He is describing some of the environmental issues that would interest Imus. He spoke of how it was marines who saved the Hudson River about 40 years ago.

Posted by Karennj | 03/23/07, 02:39 AM EST

Teresa talking about how the people in the book are regular people.
It’s scary in the sense that the science is scary, but there are so many opportunities.
“The biggest sin is to do nothing.”

Posted by GV | 03/23/07, 02:40 AM EST

Imus asking THK about the process of writing the book—did they go around the country interviewing people? How did they come to be doing that?  THK says the point is to listen to people and elicit their stories about their part in the environmental movement where they live. THK: “There are so many opportunities with the technology we now have, that it’s a sin to just do nothing.”

Posted by Otter | 03/23/07, 02:40 AM EST

“Book that reads the stories of what is possible ...” to help the enviroment.  “Biggest sin is to do nothing.”  THK

Posted by Island Blue | 03/23/07, 02:40 AM EST

Kerry speaking about how conserving energy let Texas Instuments keep jobs in the US not China - where they intended to move for economic reasons.

Imus loves cover.

Posted by Karennj | 03/23/07, 02:41 AM EST

Telling what Texas Instrument and other companies are doing - how they are saving money by becoming more green.

Posted by Island Blue | 03/23/07, 02:41 AM EST

John talking about the economic benefits of reducing emissions.
Major corporations are understanding that it good business.

Imus says he loves the picture on the book cover.

Posted by GV | 03/23/07, 02:42 AM EST

Imus keeping on topic, good for him.

Posted by fedup | 03/23/07, 02:42 AM EST

JK looking earnest, involved, yet relaxed—- this is not the senator opining on politics, this is the author talking about his book and subjects that he believes in. It’s a real change of pace from when he last appeared live in Imus’ studio. THK, of course, looks simply smashing as always.

Posted by Otter | 03/23/07, 02:42 AM EST

US has to take the lead to get China not to build coal burning plants.  One per week.

Posted by Island Blue | 03/23/07, 02:43 AM EST

JK talking about the global problems of climate change, citing China’s dirty coal-burning power plants, says that we (America) needs to engage with them to help them use technology to cut down their greenhouse gas emissions. Talks about GE’s new technology to capture more than half of the carbon from power plant emissions, says that we need to take the global lead on pushing the technological envelope on this front. “This is the United States. We’re the people that did the Apollo noon landing, the Manhattan Project. We know how to do these things.”

Posted by Otter | 03/23/07, 02:45 AM EST

Book “about regular people” and their stories.  Imus asked what regular people can do.

Posted by Island Blue | 03/23/07, 02:45 AM EST

I love those eyebrows.

Posted by Violet | 03/23/07, 02:46 AM EST

Imus: “Are you happy he’s not running, Teresa?”

THK: “Am I allowed to say?” (pause) “Well, the answer is… yes.”

Says she is proud of all that they did working with the various campaigns, learned in an incredible amount during their 15 years of doing that, but is actually glad not to be doing it anymore.

Posted by Otter | 03/23/07, 02:47 AM EST

China is planning to build one pulverized coal plan a week, which will be a disaster. GE has technology to capture and sequester coal.

This is about what regular people can do. Speaks of NM rancher who fought environmental problems.

Posted by Karennj | 03/23/07, 02:47 AM EST

Talking about coal powered power plants and sequestering.

Imus asking how to get regular people to read the book.

JK says the book is about regular people.  One of the people in the book was a Bush coordinator.

Imus asking Teresa is happy JK is not running for Pres.  She said, selfishly, yes.

JK says THK would have supported his run if that was his choice.

JK bringing the conversation back to the people in the book.

Posted by GV | 03/23/07, 02:47 AM EST

Another comment from Vince Morris via his blackberry.  He accompanied JK & THK this morning.

“Imus just waved the book in the air and asked about it. He keeps picking it up. The senator had a great description about two people in the book. Ms. Heinz gave a thoughtful answer about how people have cared about their environment long before anyone ever heard of the term environmentalist.

The book cover image is on several of the big screens scattered around the studio.”

Posted by Violet | 03/23/07, 02:47 AM EST

JK gently pulls the discussion back on topic, using examples from the book to point out that even “the red-state folks” benefit from environmental actions in their own lives. Cites duck-hunting as an example.

Posted by Otter | 03/23/07, 02:48 AM EST

John is very excited about this book.  You can really tell it in his voice.  Made a Dick Cheney joke!

Posted by Island Blue | 03/23/07, 02:48 AM EST

Imus pointing out that the book says people don’t need to be intimidated by the thought of having to make drastic changes in their lives, that they can do small things incrementally in their lives (like using fluorescent bulbs at home)that will add up to a big diference.

Posted by Otter | 03/23/07, 02:49 AM EST

THK talking about resources in the back of the book, so that people can take action after reading the book.

Posted by Island Blue | 03/23/07, 02:49 AM EST

THK and now JK pointing out that the book isn’t supposed to scare people about how bad the situation, but to give them role models of people doing things individually and encourage them to do the same where they are. “This book is about possibilities.”

Posted by Otter | 03/23/07, 02:50 AM EST

JK has emphasized several times that these are everyday people who did something in their neighborhoods.

Posted by Violet | 03/23/07, 02:51 AM EST

Imus talking about his wife and how you can make small changes to help the environment.

THK says in the back of the book there are resources.

JK says this is a book about possibilities.  He explains that there are lots of examples that show how any individual can make a difference.

Posted by GV | 03/23/07, 02:51 AM EST

Imus - “Book will resonate better since you’re not running.”  Imus says they look great.

Posted by Island Blue | 03/23/07, 02:52 AM EST

Where to go information and and bibliography to the studies included. They are trying to give people information on what they can do. Book on possibilities.

Imus said they looked happier - Teresa said they she more of each other and get some sleep. (John added except this morning.)

Posted by Karennj | 03/23/07, 02:53 AM EST

This is a great interview for such an early part of the day. It’s fascinating, but gentle and inspiring. WTG, Kerry family.

Even Imus says that they both seem happier now than they did while JK was campaigning. THK:  “We get to spend more time together, doing things like this. And we get more sleep.”  JK: “Except this morning.” Wants to know how Imus can get up so early and do this every day.

Posted by Otter | 03/23/07, 02:53 AM EST

Talking about how early it is.  THK has a 9 am step class.

JK to Imus:  How do you do this?

Imus joked that he’s still taking cocaine.

End of interview.

Nice. JK and Teresa were both great.

Posted by GV | 03/23/07, 02:54 AM EST

Excellent interview very inspiring. Kudos to all those live blogging.

Posted by fedup | 03/23/07, 02:57 AM EST

It was quite a warm and gracious extended moment between Imus and both of the Kerrys. I’m looking forward to seeing the video up on the site here later in the day, hope they include the opening banter along with the main part talking about the book because it shows a friendly, relaxed side of all three that people rarely get to see.

Posted by Otter | 03/23/07, 02:58 AM EST

Oh, blue tie.

Seems we skipped that important detail.
It’s early.

Posted by GV | 03/23/07, 02:58 AM EST

Great interview.  Imus was very respectful, and JK and THK were great.  This was well worth getting up before dawn to listen to (in my case).

Posted by Island Blue | 03/23/07, 03:01 AM EST

Imus back after the break. Imus talking with his sidekick about how relaxed and happy JK was this morning, says it’s like he is a whole totally different person now than he was while he was running.

Posted by Otter | 03/23/07, 03:07 AM EST

They emphasized that this book was about everyday people and for everyday people.  They wanted to share the stories of people who wouldn’t call themselves environmentalists who had a positive impact in their neightborhoods and communities and the health of their of their family and friends.

Imus commented that he thought it would have more impact because JK wasn’t running for the presidency.

Posted by Violet | 03/23/07, 03:08 AM EST

“Kerry would be President if he were like he was today”  Kerry is bright as can be, wonderful sense of humor.

Posted by Karennj | 03/23/07, 03:09 AM EST

Imus and crew talking about how relaxed and smart JK appears, and what a great sense of humor he has.  Imus added something similar about THK as well.

Teasing about Teresa’s accent.

Posted by GV | 03/23/07, 03:15 AM EST

Vince Morris who’s with JK this morning followed up on the Glacier Park story that JK started to tell before Imus interupted and went in another direction.

From Vince’s Blackberry:

Senator Kerry wanted to talk about how Glacier National had 150 glaciers at one time and now has 27 - likely because of global warming.

After the segment, they both had a nice chat with Imus. They also signed a copy of their book and greeted many MSNBC employees who came over and wanted to say hello before they left the building.

Thanks for filling us in, Vince.

Posted by Violet | 03/23/07, 03:39 AM EST

Howard Fineman spoke about how Teresa did so much for Pittsburg and was great. He said Kerry was much better when he was not in front of the cameras.

Posted by Karynnj | 03/23/07, 03:40 AM EST

Posted by Karennj | March 23, 2007 7:08 AM

Karen, makes you wonder why they didn’t see that he is the same person.  I understand what they were saying, and what they said was great, but I think they missed a bigger point.

It was a good interview.  Props to JK, THK and Imus.

Howard Fineman talking about THK now.  She had mentioned that they’re both from Pittsburgh.  Says she’s a “stand up gal” and a great philanthropist.

Fineman talking about JK and how he’s always been the way he appeared today when off camera.

Posted by GV | 03/23/07, 03:41 AM EST

Nice to wake up to this play-by-play!  Thanks, peeps!

Posted by karendc | 03/23/07, 03:41 AM EST

GV,
Doesn’t it beg the question why journalists who saw this and who had known Kerry - his personality, his intelligence, and his sense of humor didn’t print that in 2004? It was said in the Shapiro book - where he said Kerry was better when the cameras were off, but most didn’t.

Also, the CSPAN rallies in the last month, especially the last few weeks, did show a very charismatic Kerry. He was great - but how many people saw it?

Posted by Karennj | 03/23/07, 03:50 AM EST

Good morning!

Great job everyone!

It was a good interview. I enjoy hearing the stories about other people’s experiences and idea.

Posted by wisteria | 03/23/07, 03:52 AM EST

Karen, I’m not suggesting the Senator ran a perfect campaign.  I’m sure he didn’t.  Maybe he needed to make more of an effort to let people see his less ‘formal’ side.
Anyway, that’s my view from the cheap seats.  I’m sure it’s not so simple when you’re in the game.
But I think you’re correct.  Once the media labels you with a certain persona, it’s difficult to shake the perception.  And they didn’t make an effort to let people see the side of Sen Kerry that Imus and crew were so impressed with today.
The thing is, Imus knows this.  So I think he was being a little disingenuous.  Still, it was good to hear him speak so highly of JK and THK.

Posted by GV | 03/23/07, 04:07 AM EST

To GV,

I get what you are saying and I really can’t imagine the pressure of a campaign - especially as the Democratic nominee. I agree that it would have been really great had people been able to see far more of this informal side, especially as the Kerrys seem to be very nice people. It would have been fun seeing more of that side in 2004.

It has to be tough balancing being informal enough that people really they know you, yet staying on guard to avoid saying anything that the RW could use as ammunition.

Hi All…I’m a newbie to this chat forum…Was wondering if anyone out-there could help me get in touch with either Vince Morris OR JK or THK??? I am co-chairing an BIG event at the Hyatt in Morristown, NJ, called: The Earth Day GREEN TIE GALA- An Awards Ceremony, Organic Dinner and ‘Green’ Silent Auction. I am on the Board of Unity Learning Environments, the non-profit putting-on this affair. We, “ULE”, founded an environmental charter school and is launching numerous other regional ‘green’ events with the purpose of educating the public on ‘sustainability’ and inspiring people to make lifestyle changes that benefit the earth! Our sponsors include: The Hyatt, Whole Foods, Relevant Times magazine and Go Organics! Catering. We would LOVE to not only have a handful of their new book to Auction-off at our “GREEN’ Silent Auciton, but to also invite them to come and join this increible dinner, prepared by THREE of the area’s finest chefs around; if they can’t make it, perhaps they can ‘make a contribution’ or ‘buy a table of 10 for our teachers to attend the event? It’s Sat., April 21st at the Hyatt in Morristown.

How do I invite them to our Event on April 21st and send them an e-vite (or hard copy)? How can I get them to donate a few autographed copies of their book?

We’re also honoring FIVE local/regional champions who have contributed largely to the forward movement of “Sustainaulity Education”: E+Co., Fairleigh Dickinson University’s “Institute for Sustainable Enterprise”, The Willow School, The Morris Land Conservancy and The Cloud Insitute of NY (Jaimie Cloud). Check us out at: http://www.communityearth.net.

Any suggestions how I can make some of these ideas happen? Please advise!!!
Signed,
Grateful in NJ!!!

Hi Robin,

Welcome.  I’ll forward your comment to Vince Morris.  He’ll be better able to respond.

Sounds like a great organization and a good event.  Good luck!

Posted by Violet | 03/23/07, 06:02 AM EST

Excellent job at live blogging, thanks everyone.

Posted by ProSense | 03/23/07, 07:59 AM EST

I just re-read the liveblog after many cups of coffee and a half day of work, and when I wrote that THK was “selfishly” glad they’re not involved in a Presidential campaign, that was her choice of words, not mine.  I’m afraid I was not very clear when I wrote that at 6:30 this morning.

I certainly don’t blame her for being glad on a personal level not to have to deal with a Presidential campaign. And I think it’s great that they can both focus on the critical issues of the day without having the distraction of campaign politics.

I can’t wait for THK’s event in Pittsburgh “Women’s Health and the Environment” on April 20.  We Pittsburghers take great pride in ‘our’ Teresa, and it’ll be good to see her host this event here at home.

Welcome to the blog, Robin, and good luck with your Gala.  Sounds like a great event.

Thanks guys for the play by play.  They were really terrific today, and Imus was even on his best behavior.  Amazon has let me know it’s shipped my book, but I haven’t received it yet.  I can’t wait to read the book!

Posted by beachmom | 03/23/07, 10:12 AM EST

Hey guys, this was great to read today. I usually don’t watch videos on my pc at work, but after reading this I had to watch the video as soon as I could!

They both looked great, and you all did a good job with the play by play. Thanks!

I am almost done reading TMOE. What a wonderful book,  I will be recommending it to all of my friends who care at all about the environment.

Posted by MH | 03/23/07, 05:18 PM EST

Wow, that was a fun interview to watch!  Imus didn’t even make me cringe ONCE!  Big thanks to THK - she must have been a good influence on him ;)

Posted by democrafty | 03/24/07, 04:52 PM EST

Hi Everybody,

I am in London. Had to check in and see what was happening. Great thread. Thanks very much. When I read people are suprised to see that Senator Kerry is actually a real nice guy and a human being as well, I wonder what took them so long to figure it out. I will watch the video before my rented wifi time runs out.
