JK spoke out strong and clear during Saturday’s Democratic radio address:

This week in Congress, a majority of Republicans prevented the Senate from holding a full and open debate on the issue of Iraq. Why? Because this so-called surge, which is nothing more than the escalation of a misguided war, is a bad idea. If there was a straight up or down, yes or no vote this week on whether the United States should keep up an indefinite presence in Iraq, it would be voted down.

Here’s what ought to happen. The Congress should tell President Bush to end this open-ended commitment of American troops. We must change the American mission in Iraq to training Iraqi security forces and focusing our efforts on removing the threat posed by foreign jihadists, not patrolling Iraqi neighborhoods under the threat of roadside bombs. The United States must get tough with Iraqi politicians - pressure them to meet tough benchmarks.

Pre-blogging the Kerry Imus talk-

Imus is talking to Jon Meachum of Newsweek, mentioning he will have the Senator on. Meachum says that one question he would like to ask is how it feels to come so close - a few votes in Ohio and he would now be in his third year as President and then have the whole party immediately turn on you. He mentioned the decision not to run was likely freeing.

Imus said that he doesn’t pretend to know the Senator, but he is a great guy in private but it didn’t translate on TV -  (which it sure did for me - but maybe that suggests the media filtered things athrough something like a fun house mirror.)

Meachum spoke of how “How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake has been through his mind a lot recently.

well, this is slightly different fare from Morning Edition in the morning but it is amusing.

Posted by Violet | 02/12/07, 02:16 AM EST

And in Iraq, the violence is only getting worse.  There is nothing our troops can do to bring this to an end.
Set a deadline, begin the diplomacy, and bring our troops home!

This morning’s news from Baghdad

BAGHDAD - Thunderous explosions and dense black smoke swirled through the centre of Baghdad today when at least one car bomb blew up in an underground parking garage.

The explosion set off dozens of secondary explosions, killing at least 59 people, police said. A second bombing nearby killed at least nine.

The blasts shattered the city centre on the first anniversary, according to the Muslim lunar calendar, of the bombing last year of the important Shiite Golden Dome shrine in Samarra, north of the capital. That attack by al-Qaeda in Iraq militants set off the torrent of sectarian bloodletting that has turned Baghdad and much of central Iraq into a battleground.

Good morning all!  No Imus here (a local radio station was listed as carrying it, but apparently, they don’t.)  Anyway, I’ll have to depend on you guys to tell me what the Senator is saying.

Posted by Island Blue | 02/12/07, 02:25 AM EST

Hey IB.  Too bad you can’t listen.  We’ll do our best play-by-play for you.
:-)

Posted by GV | 02/12/07, 02:30 AM EST

Senator’s voice sounding a tad hoarse, might be the phone connection, but it’s good to hear him speak—sounds relaxed & at ease.

Posted by Otter | 02/12/07, 02:34 AM EST

Kerry: “Hey, if the Dixie Chicks can come back and win five Grammies last night, there’s hope.”

Posted by Otter | 02/12/07, 02:35 AM EST

JK is on - Imus asking why Dems trash losing nominees like him and Gore.

JK said he isn’t going to worry about it.  You keep going.  One foot after another.

Said that everyone is being nicer.

Posted by Violet | 02/12/07, 02:35 AM EST

How does JK feel about Dems who lose elections being ostracised by the party?
It comes with the territory, he doesn’t worry about it.  Just keep putting one foot in front of the other.
If the Dixie Chicks can come back and win five Grammys, there’s hope!
He’s talking about the wedding now.

Posted by GV | 02/12/07, 02:36 AM EST

Talking about Obama’s speech. Kerry read his speech, it was clear and he’s exciting.

Posted by ProSense | 02/12/07, 02:37 AM EST

On the ‘08 candidates:
The Senator says what he cares about is that there’s a clarity about what the candidates are saying on the issues.
Now talking about the ‘surge’.  Imus doesn’t see what it will do to help anything.

Posted by GV | 02/12/07, 02:38 AM EST

The Senator talking about the need for diplomacy.
Imus again on the surge and how no reasonable person thinks it will work.

Posted by GV | 02/12/07, 02:39 AM EST

Asked Meachum’s questioned about how you deal with things - Gore too.

Kerry said Gore did superbly , laid out everything on global warning, up for oscar. Says it comes with the territory -and mentioned the Dixie Chicks winning 5 grammies.

Kerry mentioned Howard Ford was at Chris Heinz’s wedding (with a girl friend).

Priority 1 - leave Iraq.
Asked about surge Kerry said it won’t work. Kerry said there is a lack of armored humvees - that Kerry is angry about. Kerry mentioned attracting attacks in Vietnam. and they got nothing done - and that this is the same.

Imus said no reasonable person thinks surge will work, is this a last shot. Kerry said it is mixed with hope too. Kerry mentioned V. Nasr’s book on Iraq.

Posted by Karynnj | 02/12/07, 02:41 AM EST

Get Cheney and the crew to come in and testify before the Congress to find out what went on during that period.

Posted by ProSense | 02/12/07, 02:42 AM EST

Finally getting past all the irrelevant Imus-driven banter and onto the issues. Good. Kerry talking about this morning’s newspaper stories on how the incoming troops have no Humvees, not enough basic equipment, etc—says it really makes him angry to read stuff like that, comparing it to how it was when he was sent upriver, now emphasizing that the political solution is the only one that has a prayer of happening, because the fundamentals behind the war planners’ last-hope approach are completely lacking.

Kerry wants Cheney, Rumsfeld, etc. to be brought before Congress to testify as to where Feith got his orders to cook the intelligence. Good for him.

Posted by Otter | 02/12/07, 02:42 AM EST

Sen K talking about the book The Shia Revival.  Apparently, Imus doesn’t read?

Sen Kerry says Cheney and Rummy should testify before Congress.  Wants to know where the orders came from.  “We ought to have accountability.”

Talking about the IWR.  Powell told them they would continue the inspections.

“I was wrong.”

Posted by GV | 02/12/07, 02:43 AM EST

Explaining the IWR vote now, emphasizing his belief in Powell’s trustworthiness and noting that he believed Powell’s statements indicated that the Bush 41 crowd had come to the fore and were doing things sanely even back then. Later found out those statements were false.

Posted by Otter | 02/12/07, 02:44 AM EST

Set a date by which major redeploment will take place.
One year.  Same as he recommended last year.

He mentioned setadeadline.com

Posted by GV | 02/12/07, 02:45 AM EST

Need an intelligent policy that doesn’t expose troops to IEDs, doesn’t puts them in Iraqi homes. Have to set a date.

Mentions setadeadline.com

Posted by ProSense | 02/12/07, 02:45 AM EST

Imus wants to talk about Obama smoking?
Geez.

Posted by GV | 02/12/07, 02:45 AM EST

Imus continues to divert Kerry into random Obamarama trivialities. Who the heck cares whether Obama quits smoking or not, Don? Sheesh.

Posted by Otter | 02/12/07, 02:46 AM EST

Arrgh, I over slept , and the first words I hear are we need Cheney and Rummy in front of us and get answers.

Sounds like a very friendly conversation so far.

Posted by fedup | 02/12/07, 02:46 AM EST

John McCain is one of the architects of this surge.

Posted by ProSense | 02/12/07, 02:47 AM EST

Sigh. This morning’s interview is a really good example of why I never, ever watch or listen to Imus. Maybe it’s just designed for people to listen to while shaving or driving or otherwise not paying attention.

Posted by Otter | 02/12/07, 02:47 AM EST

Here’s a link to the Vali Nasr book.  JK must be reading an early copy or something published elsewhere.

The Shia Revival: How Conflicts within Islam Will Shape the Future (Paperback)

Posted by Violet | 02/12/07, 02:48 AM EST

Haha, got Imus stammering on McCain. LOL

Posted by fedup | 02/12/07, 02:48 AM EST

JK says John McCain is one of the architects of the surge.
Imus backing away from his McCain love?
Oh, please!  If Sen K can stop the Iman-McCain love affair, that will be a real accomplishment.

Posted by GV | 02/12/07, 02:49 AM EST

Imus noting in followup comments that Kerry won’t possibly support Edwards or Clinton because he hates them, they both tried to screw him over in ‘04. Then speculating randomly from there about who he might support. At least his sidekick is a little more focused and rational in reply, but that’s not saying much.

Posted by Otter | 02/12/07, 02:50 AM EST

Imus insisting JK hates Edwards and won’t support him.
I think Sen K dodged that pretty well, lol.  Imus just loves to stir up conflict.

Posted by GV | 02/12/07, 02:50 AM EST

Speaking about IWR - tough vote. Kerry went to Pentagon and the Pentagon lied about it. The Sunday before the vote he spoke with Powell, who said that they would go through the process to try to avoid war - he thought the Scowcroff people won out.

Speaks of a need to change deployment - get the troops out of the crossfire. Kerry says 1 year, Obama has March - Kerry said that’s close. Mentioned setadate.com (the correct name is setadeadline.com )

Transitioning from Iraq, Imus asked Kerry about whether Obama has quit smoking. Kerry said he is trying. Now asking about who he will back - Kerry said that he may choose to endorse. Refused to say who. Imus told him that Edwards said mean things.

Kerry tried to get Imus to criticise McCain by pointing out he was one of those behind the surge.

Says that Kerry and Teresa will be on Imus first.

Withh Kerry off, now saying that Hillary hurt him, but then he said that Kerry certainly can’t support Edwards.

Posted by karynnj | 02/12/07, 02:50 AM EST

Yea, can’t be against the surge and for McCain.

Posted by ProSense | 02/12/07, 02:50 AM EST

Thanks for the play-by-play guys.  It was almost like hearing it live.  Almost.  Y’all did a great job.

Posted by Island Blue | 02/12/07, 02:51 AM EST

Well, unlike the ‘This Week’ show and, presumably, this afternoon’s radio & podcast interviews, this appearance wasn’t really intended to do much of substance—it did give Kerry a chance to sound warm and human and at ease to we-the-sheeple, so in that regard it probably did some good one way or another.

Posted by Otter | 02/12/07, 02:53 AM EST

Now, that was diplomacy.  Any time someone can do an interview with Imus and manage to get his message out between the distraction of Imus trying to provoke a controversy is a success.
I really think Sen Kerry has fun doing Imus’ show.  I’m not a big Imus fan, but I do like listening to them together.

Posted by GV | 02/12/07, 02:56 AM EST

After JK hung up, they commented on how relaxed he sounded.

Posted by Violet | 02/12/07, 02:56 AM EST

Hi everyone -

I was listening - thought it was a GREAT interview, and I understand why JK agrees to go on this stupid show:

  * Imus can blunder into asking anything that pops into his head, which means he gets information others don’t even ask about.

  *  He has a huge audience.

  *  Kerry gets a chance to say what he needs to say while working it naturally into the conversation.

He did get the website wrong (ouch).  He said “set a date.com”  Oh well.  For someone who likes the catnippy bits, this was a fun interview.  And my inner cat actually enjoyed Imus’s speculation after Kerry hung up about the other nominees, and about how the Clintons screwed him over in 2004.  True or not (and I have my own ideas about that) it was fun to hear that on the radio.

Posted by Diane | 02/12/07, 02:59 AM EST

Dianne, I agree.  It was a fun interview, but still, the important issues were discussed.  Your point about Imus asking the questions no one else will ask is significant and I think, very true.  The informality of the show gives people a chance to see JK in a different setting.

The Senator made his points and I think he might even have Imus rethinking the McCain support.  One can only hope.  Seriously, how can one think the surge is a bad idea, and still support McCain?

Comeon, I-man.  Think about it.

Posted by GV | 02/12/07, 03:09 AM EST

Seriously, how can one think the surge is a bad idea, and still support McCain?

I know - consistency, though, is not one of Imus’s strong suits. ;-)

Posted by Diane | 02/12/07, 03:12 AM EST

Hard to watch TV and post. All around got the points in, and liked the longer explanation of IWR, set a deadline (yea), McCain and surge, but appreciated putting one more reason for the loss with the Clintons.

Politics are political. Candidates for the next go around are always self-serving, like Richardson not allowing a recount.

He enjoys the Imus banter, and GV correct, that was diplomacy. He’s very nimble in getting points across in interviews.

Bringing in Runsfeld and Cheney to testify about pre-war intel would indeeed be nice.

Good day, all.

Posted by Marjorie G | 02/12/07, 03:17 AM EST

Oh brother, I overslept too. Been sick all weekend. Thanks for the update folks.

Imus said “setadate.com” huh? Oh boy, I did that myself once. Blush.

Sounds like a great interview. Sorry I missed it.

On the Vali Nasr book, the link above is for the paperback edition which is not yet published and will ship on April 23, 2007.

Here’s the link to the hardcover version of the book which is available now.

And here’s ALA Booklist’s review of the book:

*Starred Review* About 15 percent of Muslims worldwide are Shia. In Iran, Iraq, Lebanon, and Bahrain, Shia constitute a majority or plurality of the populace, and areas of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia (in the latter, the oil fields) host Shia majorities. Iran’s Islamic Revolution under Ayatollah Khomeini, which rushed Islam to the forefront of non-Islamic consciousness internationally, was a Shia phenomenon. Iranian Middle East researcher Nasr, who teaches, consults, and writes in the U.S., says that Khomeini was rather a maverick who discountenanced the quietism, ritualism, and celebratoriness of mainstream Shia. If that is a revelation to Westerners, so, probably, are Nasr’s arguments that the Shia have been persecuted and oppressed by the Sunni majority ever since the divergence of the two Islamic strains more than 1,300 years ago, and that Islamic terrorism from well before 9/11 to the current insurgency in post-Saddam Iraq is a tactic of intransigent Sunnism. Nasr never pontificates or accuses, always choosing to show both sides’ reasons for even the most heinous actions. He never so much as hints at what many readers must infer from his presentation—that the U.S. should think again and again and again before attacking Iran. So enlightening and perspective altering that no one concerned about the Middle East should miss reading it. Ray Olson

I heard 90% of the interview—missed the end.  I thought it was a great appearance.  Advocating diplomacy is a very hard message to get across to a bellicose sound byte public.  I lost my signal about the time that Imus was insinuating bad-blood with Edwards.  How was the post interview discussion?

It’s a sad thing that everytime they talk about a date for troops to be redeployed it has to be pushed further out because of Washington inaction in the meantime.  Kerry has made the point that many times that 1/2 the troops that died in Vietnam died after the government knew the war was a mistake.

Posted by cadmium | 02/12/07, 04:14 AM EST

Imus said “setadate.com” huh? Oh boy, I did that myself once. Blush.

Actually, it was Kerry who said that.  I hope his aides heard and will remind him not to make the same mistake (an easy enough one to make, for sure) on Ed Schultz later today.  Don’t want to frustrate potential signees. :-)

Posted by Diane | 02/12/07, 04:21 AM EST

I, too, thought it was a great interview. Wish he’d managed to say setadeadline, not setadate. . other than that, it was great.

If we can’t have this man for president, I at least want these things: (a) for people finally to see the truth about this man (b) for people, including the media,  finally to LISTEN to this man (c) for people to appreciate that it was a tragedy, as well as an outrage, that he did not win in 2004 (OK, he probably DID win, but that’s another story): not just because we got 4 more years of Bush, but because we deprived ourselves of the chance to have a truly first-rate president, the first in my voting lifetime (In my entire adult life, Kerry was the first candidate I voted for for truly positive reasons, not merely for the usual reasons of lesser-of-two-evils , well, he’s good-enough). . (d) for people to recognize that we all share the blame for the outcome of the 2004 election: the media, Republican as well as Democratic politicians, the inattentive voters. Sure, Kerry made a few mistakes, but he also led a valiant and honorable campaign. We’re the ones who wouldn’t listen, who let the media and political operatives get awy with their sabotage. We’ve got to stop waiting for saviors (or telegenic media darlings)  on white horses, and start taking the future of the country into OUR hands. I"m grateful that JK is doing his part; now we’ve got to do ours.

Agree 100%. It’s time to roll up the sleeves and start doing our jobs as citizens.

Posted by fedup | 02/12/07, 05:21 AM EST

Good Morning ! Thanks for the great job and the info.  I overslept, too.

MBK…

I SO agree with your comments…we CITIZENS must wake up and do our part. No matter what else happens in 2008…if citizens do their job this time…I can live with the result.

Posted by YvonneCa | 02/12/07, 06:30 AM EST

Well, one of the most important things that we as citizens can wake up and start doing our jobs at again is to preserve and protect the Constitution (you know, that pesky ol’ dusty document that the current administration keeps trying to systematically dismantle because is so goshdarn inconvenient for them to live up to).

And one of the most immediate ways that we can start preserving and protecting all those inconvenient truths we hold to be self-evident is to follow the suggestions of the Backbone Campaign for the upcoming anniversary of that most important document, as presented here:

http://www.wethepeoplemarch4th.org/

MARCH FORTH!
A National Day of Dialogue, Action & Celebration

“We the People” as the authors of the progressive story that is America, will gather under the mandate to “create a more perfect union” and chart an aspirational course towards greater justice, domestic tranquility, the common defense, and liberty for all.

March 4, 1789, was the day that the US Constitution went into effect.  Today, March forth, a fortunate pun is also a call to action. In a time of polarization, abandonment of founding principles, and the apparent inability of elected officials to address the most dire crisis of our time “We the People” must MarchForth!

Our Country is a work in progress.  The Constitution that establishes the foundation of our nation requires continual vigilance by “We The People” in order to insure that it is defended to serve present and future generations. March 4th is a day to reaffirm our vigilance and our commitment to actively guiding the course of our nation. It is a day to celebrate what unites us, enter into dialogue on our disagreements, and design actions to further the desires we hold in common.  March 4th is a day to gather together to consciously address the common goal of creating, on behalf of our children, “a more perfect union.”

And as if we actually required any more personalized reasons to do what needs to be done, well, this is also the perfect opportunity to heed the call that the late great gadfly Molly Ivins made to us in her final column:

“We are the people who run this country. We are the deciders. And every single day, every single one of us needs to step outside and take some action to help stop this war. Raise hell. Think of something to make the ridiculous look ridiculous. Make our troops know we’re for them and trying to get them out of there. ... We need people in the streets, banging pots and pans and demanding, ‘Stop it, now!’”

So what better way to honor Molly’s memory, preserve and protect the Constitution, and bring all our collective pressure to bear on the current administration to Set A Deadline and bring our brave boys and girls back home, all at the same time?

Grab your pots and pans, gang, and let’s all go March Forth For Molly this year!

Posted by Otter | 02/12/07, 08:33 AM EST

For John, For Molly, For US :-)
