JK coming up right after the news.

Posted by fedup | 02/12/07, 09:02 AM EST

Okay, am waiting impatiently to hear the conversation with Senator Kerry to begin on the Ed Shulz show. I must say that I usually abjure broadcast talk radio as much as I possibly can, with the exception of NPR that is—I have a very low tolerance for stridency and endless commercials—but in this case I’m willing to make an excepion.

Posted by Otter | 02/12/07, 09:02 AM EST

California checking in…

Posted by YvonneCa | 02/12/07, 09:04 AM EST

Here, for as long as I can be.  Looking forward to it.

Posted by TayTay | 02/12/07, 09:05 AM EST

Commercials *still* running. In the meanwhile, am time-slicing and listening to the Blog Talk Radio show during the gaps—it’s good stuff, I’ve caught a few of its podcasts already.

Ed says; ‘I wish you were running for president’

Posted by Kerstin | 02/12/07, 09:08 AM EST

“Need some common sense..” Introduces Kerry. Wishes he was running for President (me, too).

Frees him...no presidential cloud.

Posted by YvonneCa | 02/12/07, 09:08 AM EST

Kerry pointing out to Ed that not having “the presidential cloud hanging over it” frees him up to really focus on Iraq and on environmental issues now.

Posted by Otter | 02/12/07, 09:08 AM EST

Me too, Ed!

Posted by democrafty | 02/12/07, 09:08 AM EST

Ed saying he wished JK was running for President, and JK says thank you but ...

Posted by fedup | 02/12/07, 09:08 AM EST

Ed steering convo to the Russians, Kerry bringing it back to the Sunni-Shia issues first.

Posted by Otter | 02/12/07, 09:09 AM EST

JK; Rise of sectarian violence is something the admin never focussed on and weren’t even aware of difference between shia and sunni.

Posted by Kerstin | 02/12/07, 09:09 AM EST

JK is on… Ed says that he wishes JK was running.

JK says it is what it is and it frees him up to say what he needs to say without the Presidential cloud hanging over it.

Ed then points out that JK has been saying all along that it’s a regional conflict and that point just now seems to be emerging in the weekend newspapers.

JK is now emphasizing the Shia / Sunni differences and that the administration was unaware that they were unleashing these forces when they removed Saddam.

Posted by Violet | 02/12/07, 09:10 AM EST

High up people in the office did not even know the difference between Sunni and Shitte told to JK

Posted by fedup | 02/12/07, 09:10 AM EST

US administration didn’t know the difference between sects in Iraq???  I know I shouldn’t be surprised, but....

Posted by democrafty | 02/12/07, 09:10 AM EST

Lots of shia in Iran, Pakistan, India, Indonesia - very dangerous. Why hasn’t the administration pushed for a summit?

Posted by Kerstin | 02/12/07, 09:10 AM EST

Kerry expressing disbelief that the administration is still refusing to go for a regional summit meeting to find a political & cultural solution that will work for the people who live there.

Posted by Otter | 02/12/07, 09:11 AM EST

Repeated points from this morning.  Freer to discuss what he wants and listed Iraq and global climate change as his top priorities.

What about the Russians:

Iraqi internal violence and what it means.  The Bush Admin has taken away the barriers that kept the internal strife at bay.  We must get the fundamental diplomatic and political stakes right first in order to begin to solve the problems.

Posted by TayTay | 02/12/07, 09:11 AM EST

Asking why the deadline is so critical.  JK repeats how important it is for using as leverage.

Posted by Violet | 02/12/07, 09:11 AM EST

Deadline is important because the internal struggle in Iraq for power has nothing to do with US troops.

Posted by Kerstin | 02/12/07, 09:11 AM EST

This is great!

Posted by DynamicDems | 02/12/07, 09:12 AM EST

Going over his legislation, without a date you can’t force people to change

Posted by fedup | 02/12/07, 09:12 AM EST

Sectarian violence nonever understood by this administration. They have unleashed forces that were contained. Won at ballot box what they could never have won in 1300 years. (?)

Very dangerous situation.

Deadline legislation.  Real stakeholders fighting for politcal power. Until resolved (federalism, oil, etc.) ...

Mentions setadeadline.com (correctly) smile

Discussing last trip and meeting with Assad.

Posted by YvonneCa | 02/12/07, 09:12 AM EST

yeah—Ed said the setadeadline.com address twice!!

Posted by Violet | 02/12/07, 09:12 AM EST

Kerry:  Must have a date certain to force people to resolve their differences without hiding behind an American umbrella for protection.

Ed is emphasizing http://www.setadeadline.com and giving Kerry a chance to expound more on the need to have discussions with all sides.

Kerry: If Reagan can sit down with Gorbachev and Nixon can go to China, it’s absurd for us not to be engaged with the others in the region in order to protect the interests of the United States there.

Posted by Otter | 02/12/07, 09:14 AM EST

JK says we are not even acting out of our own nat’l security interests anymore.  Go, JK!

Posted by democrafty | 02/12/07, 09:14 AM EST

How do you further the national security interests of the US? Not by allowing Hamas, Hezbollah, etc to grow stronger.

Posted by Kerstin | 02/12/07, 09:14 AM EST

YAY ! Big Ed say setadeadline.com twice slowly and clearly.

Posted by fedup | 02/12/07, 09:14 AM EST

Kerry citing his comments from the ‘04 campaign that buttress the predictability of the administration’s having little to no credibility even when they make legitimate claims about what is going on there now.

Posted by Otter | 02/12/07, 09:15 AM EST

Pushing engagement in the area to further OUR OWN interests.

Iranian involvement:  Eddie...credibility problem.

JK confirming credibility problems

Iranians are ‘making mischief” What do we do..not just rhetoric...engagement needed.

Posted by YvonneCa | 02/12/07, 09:15 AM EST

Iranians ARE amking mischief, and are involved with weapons across the border. We know this. Question is how to deal with it. Must be done with talks and engaging in dialogue.

Posted by Kerstin | 02/12/07, 09:15 AM EST

JK is coming off very forceful and very determined. Excellent!

Posted by DynamicDems | 02/12/07, 09:15 AM EST

Diplomacy, diplomacy, diplomacy.

Posted by fedup | 02/12/07, 09:16 AM EST

How do we change behavior in the ME?  Negotiate, engage direct with Iran and Syria and explores their concerns.

Posted by democrafty | 02/12/07, 09:16 AM EST

How do we change the behavior?  Not by ratcheting up the verbal attacks and the military attacks.

Points out that we didn’t stop talking to China and Russia even though they were primary weapons suppliers to Vietnam.

Posted by Violet | 02/12/07, 09:16 AM EST

Good point.  Just because these arms are coming from Iran is no reason to stop any diplomatic effort.  Kerry brought his own personal experience into this from Vietnam and how Chinese weapons crossed the border there too.

Good point.

Posted by TayTay | 02/12/07, 09:16 AM EST

Ed just mentioned setadeadline.com
JK has not determined if he will endorse a Dem candidate.

Posted by Kerstin | 02/12/07, 09:17 AM EST

Kerry comparing the Chinese & Soviets funneling arms & supplies to Vietnam back in his day to what Iran and Syria are doing in Iraq & Afghanistan now—reminding everyone that common grounds can be found against the Taliban, the narco-trafficking, the legitimate interests of Iran & Syria & the region and that is why engaging them in discussions is not only smart but necessary.

Posted by Otter | 02/12/07, 09:17 AM EST

Iran has concerns, we should engage on this...Taliban.  Iran helped us against Afghanistan.

Eddie mentioning setadeadline.com again.

Endorsements?  Not decided.

Mentioned wedding.

Time for candidates to make theor case.  Will push the issues...mentioned ‘extended Kerry Family !  smile

Posted by YvonneCa | 02/12/07, 09:18 AM EST

Thanks, guys, for the play by play.  I can’t listen now, so I appreciate you typing away what’s going on.  Thank goodness for podcasts.

Posted by beachmom | 02/12/07, 09:18 AM EST

Shout-out to the extended Kerry family - JK trusts his supporters to help end the war and get to work on global warming.

Posted by democrafty | 02/12/07, 09:19 AM EST

Push the issues to the candidates, going to use the Kerry family and his community to spread the issues. (We are ready.)

Posted by fedup | 02/12/07, 09:19 AM EST

Kerry is reminding the other candidates that he is going to use the extended Kerry family and the huge group of supporters he had in ‘04 and ‘06 to push the Set A Deadline effort to get us out of Iraq.

Now shifting over to the topic of global climate change. Ed’s giving him room to run with that theme. This is a Good Thing, it’s an important issue and a message that matters a lot to Kerry.

Posted by Otter | 02/12/07, 09:19 AM EST

Hopes ppl will pay attentino to climate change issue.
16 coal fired power plants planned for Texas - to be built by old standards. Will dump CO2 into the atmosphere.
Bush admin has done away with rules where polluters have to pay.

Posted by Kerstin | 02/12/07, 09:20 AM EST

Global Climeate Change 10 year window.  Discussing old coal plants and old vs. new standards.  It’s a kind of corruption, disgrace.

End.  Great interview, Senator Kerry!

Posted by YvonneCa | 02/12/07, 09:20 AM EST

Now talking about climate change and that we have a 10 year window.  That it’s clearly an issue that must be dealt with now.

Talks about coal-fired plants in TX being allowed to be built under the old rules—not the new rules.

Ed said he wasn’t aware but that he would get on it.

Posted by Violet | 02/12/07, 09:20 AM EST

JK telling it like it is on Big Eddie’s show, way to go sir

Posted by johng | 02/12/07, 09:20 AM EST

Ed Schultz says his audience loves JK. grin

Posted by fedup | 02/12/07, 09:20 AM EST

As he has done before, Kerry emphasizing the economic values of being good corporate environmental citizens. Ed picking up on that, especially the reprehensible coal-polluting initiatives in Texas that Kerry mentioned.

Posted by Otter | 02/12/07, 09:21 AM EST

JK on Heading Left now.

Posted by fedup | 02/12/07, 09:23 AM EST

JK sure got Big Ed fired up on the environment. Good!

Posted by DynamicDems | 02/12/07, 09:24 AM EST

JK on Heading Left Show now.

Posted by Kerstin | 02/12/07, 09:24 AM EST

Discussing the war and saying how arrogant this administration is. Now telling what he saw on the ground in Iraq last month.

Posted by fedup | 02/12/07, 09:25 AM EST

Is hoping to get setadeadline.com signatures into the half million mark. Important to have as big a voice as possible.

Posted by Kerstin | 02/12/07, 09:26 AM EST

What is Iraq really like.  It’s a war zone. You are in a very limited space and very protected.  It’s a place under seige.  The inherent problems of being occupiers unused to the language or place.

Chris Bowers did work on setadeadline.com

What about the non-binding resolutions.  (Why did Warner, Hagel vote against?) Well, maybe those folks are trying to jump start the talks.  Politics is getting in the way of common sense around here.

Oooh, yeah, the Republican dissenters were for it before they were against it.  (The Surge res.)

Posted by TayTay | 02/12/07, 09:27 AM EST

Talked about setadeadline, mentioned how many people have signed up and JK said we need at least a half million up to a million.

Posted by fedup | 02/12/07, 09:27 AM EST

Missed the first bit—JK talking about a summit.  Someone asked about what he saw when he visited.

Talked about a place under siege.

Now said that he wants a half million or a million signatures at setadeadline.com to get the message across to Congress that people are serious.

Politics is getting in the way of common sense in Washington.

Said a non-binding resolution is not enough.  But it is a first step and that if you can get Republican senators to sign on, that’s a first step that gets them to publicly declare.

Posted by Violet | 02/12/07, 09:27 AM EST

Talking about how a non-binding resolution in congress may not be enough, but it’s a start. Expressed frustration at how repubs are trying to stall this. Realizes that ultimately, a binding resolution is needed.

Posted by Kerstin | 02/12/07, 09:28 AM EST

Listening to Blogtalk -

Kerry is speaking of what is needed in Iraq - deadline, summit etc

What did he see in Iraq - mantioned it’s a place under seige and our people don’t speak the language.

Nate - 30,000 co signers on setadeadline - Kerry says good but we need it up.

Non-binding resolution - asked why Hagel voted against his amendment- politics getting in the way against of common sense. Non- binding not enough, but it’s a first step. Will change dynamics.
Mentioned his legislation. Things people feel frustration - given Nov elections and protests. Kerry says they only have 49 votes (Johnson in hospital, Leiberman supports Bush)

Posted by karennj | 02/12/07, 09:29 AM EST

Matt from Akron, OH on Ed’s show is a Marine commenting on JK’s ten-year window for global warming says that the same is true for genocide in Darfur, etc., time to get moving in all of these related, humanitarian concerns.

Served in Iraq 2 years ago, says it was a civil war then, thinks the surge is a bad idea, felt like his patrols there were pointless.

Posted by democrafty | 02/12/07, 09:29 AM EST

Points out that the Dems in the senate right now don’t even have a working majority in part because of lieberman siding with prez. Says they need repubs to sign on with them.

Posted by Kerstin | 02/12/07, 09:29 AM EST

Chris Bowers:  Nothing is happening in the way of opposition and nothing works to stir action.

Dems did a great job, but we got effective 49 votes.  (Johnson out and Lieberman is well, Lieberman.) They have to be encouraged to join.

Bowers:  How to push the ball on opposition and getting the public engaged.

We got to win a bigger margin.  (This is also about ‘08) We need a heavier footprint in the Congress.

Posted by TayTay | 02/12/07, 09:30 AM EST

He’s talking about why continued effort is still important on the part of voters...the Democratic majority is slim. Mentions holding Republicans to account for their votes.

Posted by DynamicDems | 02/12/07, 09:31 AM EST

Points out that with Tim Johnson still in the hospital and Lieberman supporting the president, that the Dems don’t have a majority and that they need to bring along some Republican senators.

Said that there are 21 or 22 Republican senators who will be up for election in 2008 and that people need to focus on letting those senators know how they feel about what’s going on in Iraq.

Posted by Violet | 02/12/07, 09:31 AM EST

Thinks that anti war protests do have an impact with the Senate in sending a message. They’re great organizational tools, network, and helps build a base in changing outcome of elections.

Posted by Kerstin | 02/12/07, 09:31 AM EST

Asked what can we do - Kerry - get behind people running against Republicans up in 2008. Will be things to do this year. Asked in Congress impacted by protests - Kerry said yes, people take the pulse, also good as organizational tools, growing a base.

Posted by Karennj | 02/12/07, 09:32 AM EST

Explaining that people need to stay involved. Democratic majority is narrow. People need to get active now.  Mentioning setadeadline.com.  smile

Will grow over the course of the next year. Supporting activism.

Gatherings are useful. Builds a base to change election outcome.

Posted by YvonneCa | 02/12/07, 09:32 AM EST

Discussing surprise he lost last election, following the interview.

Posted by YvonneCa | 02/12/07, 09:33 AM EST

Talking about activism helps to build a base through networking.

Posted by DynamicDems | 02/12/07, 09:34 AM EST

They’re continuing to talk about JK’s career and that his testimony as a young veteran in 1971 is consistent with what he’s saying now.

Posted by Violet | 02/12/07, 09:34 AM EST

I can’t listen, but you all are doing an awesome job.

Bravo and thanks!

Kerry on!

Posted by ProSense | 02/12/07, 09:34 AM EST

After conversation: Kerry has a good voice for radio - still shocked we lost. Says it was not a fair fight.

To Kerry’s credit that he keeps fighting even though he’s not running. He described Vietnam as a civil war in 1971 - like now. Movement against surge for a couple of weeks - now it’s slower.

Rove/media doesn’t stop either - after Nov win, media is all saying it was “moderates” that won.

Posted by Karennj | 02/12/07, 09:35 AM EST

They are taking calls on JK.

Posted by fedup | 02/12/07, 09:38 AM EST

They’re asking for folks to call in ... the phone number is (646) 652-4803.  So call in if you want to say anything about JK.

Posted by Violet | 02/12/07, 09:38 AM EST

Well, it’s too late, but my computer absolutely would not let me listen to the BlogTalkRadio show.

It says the file you are downloading cannot be opened—either corrupted or incorrect file type.  Anyone know what that means?

Posted by beachmom | 02/12/07, 09:38 AM EST

JK was terrific in both interviews and he’s getting the RESPECT he so rightfully deserves.

Posted by DynamicDems | 02/12/07, 09:40 AM EST

Both afternoon radio interviews a marked contrast to Imus’ distracting ramblings on his show this morning.

Posted by Otter | 02/12/07, 09:41 AM EST

Echoing ProSense’s comments. Great job everyone!

Posted by Indie Liberal | 02/12/07, 09:41 AM EST

Dave, Javelin calling in - thanks them for having Kerry on. Said he would have liked to ask Kerry, how does it feel to be in place we were in 35 years ago.  Asked about the “stab in the Back theory”. Host agreed and said also the inability to admit a mistake leads them to that theory.

Posted by Karennj | 02/12/07, 09:43 AM EST

Thanks, guys for summing everything up.  The archives work for me on the blogtalkradio website so I’ll await it going into that bucket plus the WeGotEd podcast.  I really like the live blogging here at jk.com.  Fantastic job, everyone.

Posted by beachmom | 02/12/07, 09:46 AM EST

Otter, check out the post here by Mass.  Comments by Elias about Imus:  “old pimp”

Perfect description of Imus IMO. LOL!

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=273x124920

Posted by DynamicDems | 02/12/07, 09:47 AM EST

One of the hosts - said to go to setadeadline.com but also to call your congressman , because they have a bill (non-binding) that they can win on.

Speaking of how much more combat the Iraq soldiers get vs WWII or even Vietnam - everywhere in Iraq is a battleground - totally unfair.

Posted by Karennj | 02/12/07, 09:49 AM EST

Chris questioning if they will blame Democrats - the other one answers that Bush will be blamed.

Posted by Karennj | 02/12/07, 09:50 AM EST

Violet is asking how to get the million people to sign setadeadlline.com. Their answer is that they can send the Kerry interview around and he is very good in explaining it. Sounds great

Posted by Karennj | 02/12/07, 10:01 AM EST

For someone who couldn’t listen in : is there any kind of audio archive/podcast with either/?

Posted by mbk | 02/12/07, 11:15 AM EST

To MBK:

Links to the two interviews this afternoon are on the johnkerry.com home page on the right hand side. The video for this morning’s Imus show is on the front page too.

Posted by Karennj | 02/12/07, 11:42 AM EST

You know it’s going to be a good day when you wake up in the morning and turn on the TV, and there’s John Kerry on Imus’s show, fighting for our country.

Then you work all day and get in your car to go home, and there’s John Kerry on Ed Schultz’s show, fighting for our country.

Kinda gives you a little of that hope back.

grin

Posted by GV | 02/12/07, 02:21 PM EST

Yes, it’s a damned fine day to see our Senator out there in the media doing what he does best. I especially liked the fact that besides “This Week”, Ed Schultz, and Imus he spent even more time with a few audio bloggers. Typical Senator Kerry actions .......he actually understands grassroots and the power of everyday people in the political process.

Posted by Javelin | 02/12/07, 03:41 PM EST

Karennj: Thanks for the tip on the links (I had found them on the Schultz and blogtalk radio sites, too, but, for some reason, the Schultz page didn’t have an operating link to the JK segment. . ).

Many good bits in there, but one favorite moment (especially given the [impolite word here] that Kerry endured in 2004 for being too “nuanced” and “complicated") was Ed Schultz’s concluding remarks, in which he thanked Sen. Kerry for his unfailing clarity.

The energy and fire just crackled across the air waves. As GV said, it feels great hearing Sen. Kerry fighting for our country.
Hope rising.

Posted by mbk | 02/13/07, 04:05 AM EST

Okay, I’m a little late here, but I just got done listening to that interview on Finneran’s Forum. The co-interviewer, Wendy Murphy is a dope. This is where bad policy starts - in someone’s (like her’s) head, then someone else of higher influence and importance takes it up the food chain and it goes from there. How many people died because of bad policy? Can we count the ways?  JK held his own in that interview and gave as well as he got.

You have thick skin JK, good for you (I suppose it comes with the job).

Posted by BlueWashington | 02/15/07, 08:53 PM EST

To Blue Washington:

I agree with you that the co host Wendy Murphy came across as pretty stupid. Her comment that we can’t change the policy because “we would look like big fat losers” is exactly the type of illconceived logic that Senator Kerry spoke against when he spoke of “half the names written on the Vietnam wall were for people who died after the leaders knew the policy was wrong”.

I thought she actually helped the interview because it made Senator Kerry speak more about the troops. In doing so, his very real connection to them came through. Most Senators speak of the troops in glowing nearly identical language that somehow or other sounds memorized compared to Senator Kerry’s comments, whether he is speaking of the danger they are in or their needs when they return.

I really liked this interview - even with Ms Murphy.
