Remember this number: 1-866-OUR-VOTE

1-866-OUR-VOTE is the only national voter assistance hotline staffed by live call center operators trained to provide state-specific assistance to all voters. Lawyers, poll monitors and additional volunteers will be mobilized in 16 key states across the nation to assist voters in the days leading up to the election and on Election Day. The non-partisan Election Protection Coalition is sponsoring the hotline and a poll location website: www.mypollingplace.com.

Led by People For the American Way Foundation, the NAACP, and the Lawyers’ Committee For Civil Rights Under Law, Election Protection (EP) has operated in every election cycle since 2001, and is the nation’s most far-reaching nonpartisan effort to provide voter assistance and protect voter rights. The services will include bilingual assistance for areas with a heavy concentration of Spanish-speaking voters.

Moveon’s Call for Change It’s not too late to Call for Change <!-more-> From VoteTrustUSA—5 things you can do to protect your vote:

1. Vote!

Whether you vote on November 7th or by early voting or absentee ballot, the only way to be sure your vote won’t count is if you don’t vote.

2. Find out if you’re registered and where to vote.

For many states, you can find much of this information at www.CanIVote.org. You can also call your county election office.

3. Verify Your Vote

If you’re voting on an electronic voting machine equipped with a paper trail printer, be sure to confirm that your vote is recorded accurately on the paper record. If there is a problem notify the poll worker before casting your vote.

4. Bring Identification

If your state requires a photo ID (Arizona, Indiana, and Florida) bring a photo ID. In every state, if you are voting for the first time and you registered by mail, you need to bring identification with you to the polls.

5. Election Protection Hotline

If you encounter any problem in the voting process call 1-866-OUR-VOTE (1-866-687-8683) for English or 1-888-VEY-VOTA (1-888-839-8682 para la ayuda en espanol).

For Extra Credit Be A Pollworker!

Give a day for democracy! Many counties still need pollworkers. Elections are run by people and working at the polls on election day is a way they everyone can make a difference. Call your county election office and volunteer to work on election day. You can find out more at www.pollworkersfordemocracy.org.

What We Really Owe Our Troops
Jonathan Powers
Last week America witnessed a ridiculous onslaught of political backlash, intense media coverage, non-stop scrutiny and outrage over comments made by Senator John Kerry to a group of students in California. As a veteran who served for over 14 months in Iraq, I am insulted - not by Senator Kerry, but, by the media outlets and politicians who capitalized on this botched joke.

The obsession with Senator Kerry’s remarks has once again enabled politicians to evade the real problems facing our service members and has perpetuated a political climate void of any accountability. It is American politics at its worst and at this, I am truly outraged.

After Senator Kerry’s remarks, White House press secretary Tony Snow repeatedly demanded an apology from Senator Kerry, insisting that he owed this to “our troops.” Why do we continue to sit idly by and accept this blatant hypocrisy? For the last three years, I have wanted an apology or at least a modicum of accountability from this administration for the war in Iraq and the treatment of our returning veterans.

Nobody is addressing MY outrage. I am deeply distressed by the fact that our military is overstretched and that the men and women on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan are fighting without the proper equipment. I am distressed by the fact that my fellow service members are returning home to a Veterans Administration that is under funded and overcrowded and that my friends are having to wait over six months for basic health care. I am distressed by the rapidly mounting human and political costs of our two wars and I am OUTRAGED that there is no plan in place to deal with any of these urgent issues.

Veterans offer a crucial voice when addressing public and political concerns about war and so far our voice has been absent. Our perspective has been deliberately excluded and constantly attacked. We have allowed for an environment where veterans are afraid to voice their concerns for fear of having their loyalty to this country questioned and for fear of having their service records dishonored.

Where is OUR pulpit to repeatedly demand answers?

Many have called Tuesday’s election a ‘referendum on the war in Iraq’ and while I am relieved that our country is beginning to demand responsibility for policies that require the greatest sacrifice from our citizens, I wish that more people could hear our stories and that politicians would heed the lessons of our tours of duty.

I wish I that I could share with the American public my experiences as an Army Captain responsible for a unit that was given one Kevlar vest for every two soldiers. I wish they could hear how we removed the Kevlar out of the back of each vest so that every soldier could have their chest protected. I wish they could hear how we had to sit back-to-back as we patrolled the streets of Baghdad in order to survive.

I wish that the American people could hear the stories of our 200,000 plus injured or disabled veterans who have returned home to VA hospitals with doctor / patient ratios of over 600 to 1.

If these stories were shared and if the media would dedicate a fraction of the airtime that they have dedicated to Senator Kerry’s botched joke to the voices of our troops and veterans, then perhaps our country would be able to enter the polls on Tuesday as truly informed citizens and perhaps it would become impossible for politicians to use and skew our service and sacrifice to their personal and political advantage.

1.5 million service members have served in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. We represent less than one percent of the US population and only 26% of our elected representatives have served in the military. These statistics make it far too easy for our voices to be ignored. The American public must join us in our quest for political inclusion.

The insistence that Senator Kerry’s remarks insulted my service is incorrect. What makes a mockery of my service is the refusal to address the urgent issues facing our troops.

I hope that Americans head to the polls on Tuesday with our stories and our unaddressed issues at the forefront of their minds. I hope that the American public demands answers and accountability for a botched war with the same passion and fervor for which the media and politicians demanded an apology for a botched joke.

It is imperative that in the coming months the voices of veterans are thrust into every political debate and decision about our current wars - and god forbid, any future wars. This way, in January, when congress reconvenes, we can demand accountability and encourage congress to engage and reclaim its share of responsibility for this war.

We must hold our elected officials accountable and we must demand that they reevaluate and answer the most difficult questions faced by a free and democratic society with an all-volunteer military: How and why do we go to war and how do we best care for our veterans?

The stakes are too high for us to tolerate any more ridiculous displays of partisan banter and rhetoric at the expense of our military.

Email alert, reporting dirty tricks in MN-2 , where Colleen Rowley is running a valiant race:

OLDER VOTERS ARE BEING MISLED BY PHONE CALLS TELLING THEM THEY CAN ONLY VOTE FOR COLEEN AT LIMITED POLLING SITES DURING LIMITED HOURS!

DON’T LET JOHN KLINE GET AWAY WITH MISLEADING OUR OLDER VOTERS! CALL ANY ELDERS YOU KNOW IN THE DISTRICT AND TELL THEM: “DON’T BELIEVE THOSE PHONE CALLS!”
THESE CALLS ARE BEING MADE FROM CELL PHONE NUMBERS ON THE EAST COAST. THEY ARE NOT SAYING WHO THEY REPRESENT WHEN THEY CALL.
PROTECT THE VOTING RIGHTS OF EVERY VOTER IN MINNESOTA’S SECOND CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT!

Report any misleading phone calls you receive:
Ask who is calling and ask for a number they can be called back at. Ask who they are calling on behalf of. Ask who they are being paid by, or if they say they are not being paid, who asked them to make the call. Make a note of those responses and call our Campaign Headquarters at (507) 664-3850.

MBK:

These ******* are pulling dirty tricks trying to suppress the vote all over the country.

Here in Virginia:

From the Webb campaign, via dailykos.com:

http://feeds.dailykos.com/~r/dailykos/index/~3/45924623…

Republicans are so afraid to run on their merits that they continue to resort to dirty tricks.

Listen to this robocall (.WAV) being sent to Virginia voters:

Tim Daly from Clarendon got a call saying that if he votes Tuesday, he will be arrested. A recording of his voicemail can be found online at: http://www.webbforsenate.com/media/phone_message.wav
The transcript from his voicemail reads:

“This message is for Timothy Daly. This is the Virginia Elections Commission. We’ve determined you are registered in New York to vote. Therefore, you will not be allowed to cast your vote on Tuesday. If you do show up, you will be charged criminally.”

Daly has been registered to vote in Virginia since 1998, and he has voted for the last several cycles with no problem. He has filed a criminal complaint with the Commonwealth’s attorney in Arlington.

News release:

Newswire Services
November 6, 2006
Threats of Incarceration, Changed Polling Locations, and Fliers to “Skip the Election.”

Over the past several days, voters throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia have filed complaints of incidents aimed at suppressing voter turn out in heavily Democratic and African American neighborhoods. Today, the Secretary of the Virginia State Board of Elections Jean Jensen concluded that the incidents appear widespread and deliberate.

“There are now credible reports from multiple jurisdictions around the Commonwealth that establish a pattern of dirty tricks being employed to confuse and frustrate Virginia’s voters from exercising their right to vote tomorrow. In addition to reports that have been received by the Democratic Party of Virginia, these local election officials have been receiving reports from concerned voters,” said Jack Young, co-chair of Promote the Vote.

Jim Webb Campaign files complaint with DOJ

MSN NBC just talked about it and found a article here.

http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/viewArticle.asp?articleID=16105

Over the past several days, voters throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia have filed complaints of incidents aimed at suppressing voter turn out in heavily Democratic and African American neighborhoods. This is very serious and complaints have come about robo-calls telling people their voting place has changed, telling people that if they registered in another state they will be arrested, and Fliers being passed out. This is again very serious. Wide spread PROOF of voter suppression in action.

Hey fedup, you beat me! I was busy trying to make my blockquote within a blockquote stand out. Didn’t realize you already posted the same thing. (And for some reason my post looks different now than it did in preview anyway, sigh. My nice navy font is nowhere to be seen now.)

taking a break from calling

TPM Muck is reporting that Conquest Communications, the Republican-led firm making dirty-trick robo-calls all over the country to depress Democratic turnout, has taken down their About and Contact Us page. Apparently they’ve been getting some annoying phone calls.

You can find the About page cached here, which includes this text:

If you would like to find out more about Conquest, please call us at 804-358-0560 or contact us online.

The Contact Us page, which features a web form, is cached here, and includes this note:

Conquest Communications Group stands ready to help with any project you may have. To find out more, please provide us with the following information or call us at 804-358-0560.

Love those internets. And the Google.
