Veterans Need Jack Carter as Nevada Senator

From Ted, on the road in Nevada:

Hi everyone, with 28 days left to Election Day I’m posting from the great state of Nevada, where John Kerry campaigned for Jack Carter’s campaign for the U.S. Senate.

Today I accompanied Senator John Kerry, Elizabeth Carter (wife of Nevada Senate candidate Jack Carter, son of President Jimmy Carter) and their daughter, Sarah Carter, on a stop at the Nevada State Veterans Home in Boulder City.  Gary Bermeosol, the administrator of the facility and his great staff have 169 veterans (including spouses) in their care.  In the cafeteria, Senator Kerry spoke to a group of vets who gathered around crowded tables and chairs.

Kerry stressed that electing Jack Carter to the U.S. Senate was important for veterans everywhere.  Kerry said Carter believed that providing health care for America’s heroes is more important that giving more tax breaks to millionaires. <!-more-> Elizabeth Carter spoke briefly, and then she and Kerry went table to table talking with the veterans.  Robert Hudson, a 1970-76 Vietnam army veteran originally from Michigan, thanked Kerry for coming and for supporting more funding for the VA.

“We need leadership in Washington who understands that VA funding is critical for those who gave so much for there country,” Hudson said.  Hudson also told Kerry he was looking for real leadership in Washington to change the course in Iraq.

After the talk, Gary Bermeosol took Kerry and the Carters on a tour.  I got a chance to talk with Sarah Carter, who’s been doing a great job as a blogger on her father’s campaign site, and I’m hoping to pass along a guest blog from her later about what she’s been learning about blogging and politics.

We need more veterans in the Senate. We need more veterans in the House. We need more veterans on every committee and in every smoke-filled room in which powerful but cynical people get to determine who lives and dies in foreign wars.

Only when those doing the deciding have had their own boots on the ground and their own lives on the line can the choices being made in those rarified rooms have any validity out here in the real world.

Jack Carter has a great website. Love the Vegas touch, the desert colors and the patriotic touch. Great blog there too.

I love the “Want Change Bet On Jack” . We need John “rubberstamp” Ensign OUT.  We need another veteran like Jack Carter IN.

Another beautiful day in Prague; and so nice to come here and see the old gang showing up!

I love the photo of Sen. Kerry with the vet—both look so relaxed and engaged with each other, don’t they?

That’s what I want in my country again—DIALOGUE.

Yearning for civilization,

Karen

I agree more veterans in the Senate and more in the House. We need guys who know what is really going on during war to help get us out of Iraq.

Hi, Karen—
Thanks for every single one of your words!
I’m still envying you your trip to Praha and environs!
I also loved that photo of Sen. Kerry and the vet.
And YES to your yearning for dialogue and civilization.

Ted, did I thank you yet?  It’s so great that you’re keeping us all up to date, and your photos are wonderful.  So, thank you.
All vets should know the great work Sen Kerry does for them in the Senate.  I’ve looked at the legislation he and other Dems have proposed, and compared it with some others.  The difference is really staggering when you see the facts.  McCain’s, for example, is pretty pitiful when you consider where he comes from.
Senator Kerry on Ed Schultz today!!!
Sen Kerry is always great on big Eddie’s show.  This should be good.
I heard that the Senator defended Pres Clinton yesterday, as he should.  As ALL Dems should.  I hope he blasts McCain for his statement against Pres Clinton.  And how weird that McCain addressed his criticism of Bill via his wife?  That seemed very odd to me.

Absolutely, I agree that we need more veterans in Congress to bring some reality to decisions in matters of war and peace. Jack Carter seems like an excellent candidate.

Speaking of excellent candidates, the Philly Inquirer had a GREAT article today on another veteran JK is supporting, Joe Sestak:

http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/news/local/15727457.htm?source=rss&channel=inquirer_local

This speaks to the one straw that Weldon has grasped at in this campaign. Of course everyone I know has laughed the allegation off as “politics”, but it’s great to see the facts spelled out - which turn it into a huge positive for Sestak, imo. (If you have no idea what I’m talking about, go read the article - then you’ll know why I just can’t shut up about Joe Sestak!)

Pamela - I agree, Jack Carter’s website is great. From the source it looks like they are using Drupal.  I’m impressed!

Of course it’s the design that makes it shine, but it’s nice to know that a site that nice can be built on Drupal. (A toy I’ve meant to play with someday and haven’t gotten around to, lol)

Hey MH,

Did you see Joe Klein’s column about Joe Sestak in Time magazine?  It’s wonderful to see such a great candidate get national coverage.

http://www.time.com/time/columnist/klein/article/0,9565,1535762,00.html

Overall, very favorable about Joe.  You’re lucky to have him in your district!

MH and beachmom,
thanks for the articles on Sestak. He’s the greatest hope for my former Congressional district since Bob Edgar.

Posted by unknown | 10/11/06, 06:21 AM EST

beachmom - yes I did see that!  Joe has been getting a lot of good press, and he deserves every bit of it.  (oh and your link is looking especially nice today - everyone, check out the Quote of the Day on beachmom’s link!)

Anonymous - you’re welcome. In case you didn’t catch it, here is Sestak’s website:

Thank you John Kerry for standing up against the smear and swifboating of Former-President Clinton.

We can not allow any hint of those smears to stay unanswered, not even for one moment.

(Thanks ProSense for posting this and bringing it to my attention.)

This country was born in Joe Sestak’s district, and in Patrick Murphy’s, and in Lois Murphy’s, and Chaka Fattah’s, and Allyson Schwartz’s.

So it’s only appropriate that America’s rebirth is taking form there now as well.

Joe Klein’s article on candidate Joe Sestak (the one that beachmom kindly pointed us to earlier) also provides us with some excellent templates to use in our own discussions with undecideds and independents this year. Here’s just one example:

“The military is the institution in our society that best reflects the values of the Democratic Party,” says retired Vice Admiral Joe Sestak, the Democratic candidate for Congress in Pennsylvania’s Seventh District.

This is a wonderful, underutilized political technique, the “Huh? Tell me more!” statement.

And the small gathering of neighbors in Barbara and Charles Blum’s Hershey’s Mill living room is all ears.

Sestak explains that the military provides universal health-care coverage and substantial educational benefits—“I was able to get a Ph.D. from Harvard,” he says—and it has also been a pioneer in providing equal opportunity for all, including women and minorities.

“Every military officer is a Democrat because he or she believes in investing in people,” he concludes with a flourish.

Otter - Thank you for pointing out that quote. You are absolutely right, it is excellent and an underutilized tactic. And Joe’s specific point is one we should all emphasize when talking about Democrats and the military.

From today’s Inquirer article, there is another quote that just chokes me up:

“My country doesn’t owe me,” said Sestak, a Democrat, who retired in January after 31 years. “I owe my country.”

The man served 31 years already. Read the article to see how hard he worked and the numerous awards he won during that time for his efforts. Yet, he still says, “I owe my country.”

I’d say we need a lot more of that attitude in Congress.

Jack Carter would certainly be a welcome voice in the Senate.  It’s so nice to see his family working so hard to mak him the next Senator from Nevada!

Kudos to JK for swiftly smacking down McCain’s assertions about the Clintons and North Korea. He was on it in no time flat.

Drupal seems to have a look of functionality. I really like the way the pulled together the color scheme and themes on Carter’s website. It’s unique, it steps beyond the traditional colors we see on most political websites.

Great work by John Kerry.
But I note an omission on the “Fighting Dems” page; where is the name of John Laesch (who is one of the Fighting Dems).  John is running for Congress against DENNIS HASTERT in the Illinois 14th C.D.  With the scandal surrounding Hastert and the fact that John Laesch is a GREAT veteran and politician and Democrat - he should be getting some help from his fellow Democrats - NOW!
Denny is cancelling many, many of his campaign appearances for fellow Republicans, he’s running scared in the 14th District and we need to Strike While the Iron is Hot.  Check out John’s website at http://www.john06.com
I am positive everyone will be impressed with this man.  He is running a heckuva grassroots campaign.  But some help from his fellow Dems wouldn’t hurt at all.

Hi, Marion -

According to the latest email from John Kerry, John Laesch has been added:

“It’s like a meeting of the “no accountability” caucus of the Republican Party.
Tonight in Chicago, George W. Bush and House Speaker Denny Hastert will appear
side-by-side campaigning for Republican candidates.

And, if you think Republicans can’t dance, wait until you see 2006 candidates waltz
away from the dreaded prospect of being caught in a photo op between the President
and the Speaker of the House. “Woulda. Shoulda. Coulda.”

That was Denny Hastert’s instinctive response to questions about why the Republican
leadership hadn’t done more to protect young congressional pages in the Mark Foley
scandal. Those are the words of a politician and a party who have made a habit of
ignoring the facts, ducking responsibility, and avoiding accountability.

Woulda stopped the corruption of Tom DeLay, Jack Abramoff, and Duke Cunningham.
Coulda forced President Bush to abandon his destructive “stay the course” policy in
Iraq. Shoulda cared about something other than cynically holding onto power.

Too late now, Denny. We’ve had enough. That’s why we’ve added John Laesch, your
Democratic opponent and a former Navy intelligence analyst, to our October slate of
veterans running for Congress.

Rush a contribution to our veteran candidates right now:
